30,000 mile service

Hello all, looking for some advice on the 30k mile service for 06 4Runner Sport V8. The dealership gave me a huge list of things that need to be done for a grand total of $800. After recovering my jaw from the floor, I said I would need to think about it. I can do some of the stuff myself (air filters), but my main question is about the spark plugs. Do those really need to be replaced at 30k? Also, does the 30K replacement apply only to the V6?

I'm not sure if the previous owner towed anything with this vehicle, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to have all the carious oils changed.

Here is the list:

Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires
Lubricate propeller shaft (4WD)
Replace limited-slip differential oil, if equipped
Replace spark plugs 6
Re-torque propeller shaft bolt
Replace engine air filter
Replace cabin air filter (if equipped)
Inspect the following:
Automatic transmission fluid
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs 7
Drive shaft boots (4WD)
Engine coolant 8
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front differential oil (4WD)
Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Fuel tank cap gasket
Radiator, condenser and/or intercooler
Rear differential oil
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots
Transfer case oil (4WD)


Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:

Driving While Towing
Replace front differential oil (4WD)
Replace rear differential oil, including limited-slip
Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis
Driving in Desert or On Dirt Roads
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

1) Reset the oil replacement reminder (“MAINT REQD”) light after replacing engine oil, if vehicle is equipped with this light.
6) Applies to 4Runner with 1GR-FE. Required under the terms of the Emission Control Warranty.
7) Inspect thickness measurement and disc runout.

I know there are a ton of questions in here, but I'd appreciate any advice ya'll have to offer. The last thing I want is for the dealer to perform maintenance that doesn't really need to be done.

Your dealer is taking you for a ride. The plugs, trans fluid and antifreeze don't need to be changed. The fluids and filters should cost less than $100. It took me a couple of hours to do my 30,000 mile service.

The V6 has 30k spark plugs. The V8 has iridium plugs which are good for 90 or 100k.

People line up all day long after waiting weeks for an appointment to just pay for and have this work performed. The above poster is right about the V8-V6 thing. All V6 T4R should replace their plugs at 30k. It is just the deal with those and the V8 I think is 90k but that Service Writer you dealt with prob just saw T4R & 30k and thought plugs. All the other stuff absolute should be done if you want to care for your truck that way Toyota says you should and I follow to the T.You just don't have to pay a Toyota Dealer all that money to do it. I would do all the work you can yourself (document with reciepts for parts purchased and a brief hand written note log of the repairs you perform) and the stuff you can't do find a local rep mechanic to perform and document (see above) and if there is anything left over have then have Toyota perform that (but all should be able to done by the others above) but in my opinion all the service and proper inspection should be performed. i have an '05 SR5 4wd V8
i just called the stealership for a quote on a 60k service, one gave me $675, another gave it to me for $316.40 w/o changing the front differential, $442.18 w/ changing the front differential. thing i told them to take off the service was replacing the air filter (have a k&n) and maybe cabin filter (just had that done 10k miles ago). doesn't hurt to call around and make deals. 'cause right now since they're spending a lot of time fixing those recalls, they're not making $ so they're willing to make a deal 'cause at least it's cash flow.
