30,000 service/Special operating conditions

Looking for some guidance regarding the 30,000 mile service. I went back and read some older posts but didn't find all the answers I was looking for. My dealer also quoted me at some ridiculous amount and also added/subtracted from the manufacturers recommendations. We do have a Thule rooftop carrier so was wondering more about the "special operating conditions" mentioned in the Maintenance log portion of my manual. Also, after looking into the 30,000 mile service recommendations I went back and looked at all the work covered under my 25,000 Toyota Care, and shocker, they didn't do anything besides change the oil and rotate tires (ie: no lube/re-torque of propeller shaft, no tightening of nuts/bolts, etc). Below is what the dealer quoted and recommended. Also, there is a local Toyotas Only shop that I'm looking for better estimates. Funny side note, they recommended some of these things 6 months earlier, for our next visit, at a totally different price, see ().I also carry the extended 100,000 mile warranty.

Engine/cabin filter --> $62.45
Rear diff --> $109.95 (89.95)
Front diff --> $89.95
Transfer case --> $67.95 (69.95)
Brake flush --> $89.95 (69.95)
P/S flush --> $99.95 (79.95)
Injector service --> $146.96 (89.95)

Unless you tow. I would wait until 60k for the diffs...

Never do injector service.

I would just change the air filter based on driving conditions and the oil every 7-10k until I hit 60k.

i cant remember when we are to change our spark plugs but i did them the other day along with a throttle body cleaning and all my fluids changed for the 2nd time AND LET ME TELL YOU... the power i have gained back down low was nuts! i don't know if it has to do with the new plugs or whether the throttle body cleaning did that. but all i know, is that i'm glad i did it.. I still haven't changed my trans fluid yet though, that's coming up VERY soon!

on a side note, i have always changed my diffs every 30k and sooner if i feel i might have gotten water in them.. this previous diff fluid change had no water in it and i was happy about that. my friends 04 tacoma (he's been everywhere i have offroading) had lots of water in his.. so i'm wondering if toyota modified/updated something with the breather tubes?

Spark plugs should last ~120k in the 5th gen.

Why hell no on the cabin filter? Thats a must along with the air filter and oil change and rotate, then your good.

yea you're probably right, they looked to be in very good shape but i figured i'd do them anyway. so maybe it was cleaning the throttle body? i dunno, but it pulls a lot better down in lower rpms.. give it a shot and see if you feel a significant difference. we also disconnected the battery cause it ran like crap and the rpms were very high after we put it all back together and started it. he said they sometimes do that and we just disconnected the battery for a cpl minutes and everything was fine

it was actually black behind my throttle flap.. all that does is help more carbon attach quicker . it was shiny clean after we cleaned it.

Look, if the best mpg you get is 14-16 mpg because you are pulling a trailer or you have a huge top load or you have added thousands of pounds of gear, or if you are offroad daily then you don't need to be on the severe schedule.

Chances are you feel a difference in your torque because you disconnected your battery and your TCU reset and not as a result of your cleaning anything.

you very well could be right. i've disconnected it a few times before and it didn't feel that strong but again it could be in my head. ugh.. i wish the computers tune would just stay like that then.

We do tow a raft trailer in the summer but not all the time and it's also not very heavy. We almost always have the thule box on though, not enough room with my son and dog!

That was my thought for the filters (both) but added them to show how ridiculous I felt the quote was from my local dealer. I've not changed the cabin filter before, but I think there is a link on here somewhere to show how/where to find.

None of these are needed at 30K. Walmart has cabin air filter for a 1/4 or 1/5 of this price.

I am planning on the cabin/air filter myself, anyone have recommendations on brands? I was also surprised by the injector service recommendation myself, my local dealership is owned a Lithia for those who are familiar...Thanks for help guys.

I agree with the others in that some of these aren't needed yet but as for the different and transfer case, I'd change those myself. Easy to do.

Because I bought mine used I decided to do the differentials and transfer case service myself (at 30K miles).

It was about $80 in oil and parts and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Can't comment on the price because I don't use the dealer and only just had my 25K service done but I do always have them do the "special operating conditions" service because I do tow and while I don't put on as many miles as most they are usually rougher miles.
