300 miles to a tank....I'm a believer

Yesterday I went to drop my wife and child off at my sisters house in St. Louis. I was doing 65mph (not normal for me), and I noticed when I got to St. Louis I had a little under a quarter tank used. So I decided to see how long I could go before filling up since I normally fill up when I'm there. I got all the way back home and still had a little under a quarter tank left. I put 15.06 gallons (I always go to the first click) and I went 301.3 miles. All highway and my widows were down. I cut two large holes in my air box, similar to 2 deckplates and I have a new cherry bomb vortex muffler. I have never believed when people say they have gotten 300 miles to a tank. 65 really does make a difference I think.

You should be getting that if it's all highway.

My mom drives from here in Littleton to CO Springs and back 4 times a week (over 100 miles round trip) in her stock '99 limited she always sees about 320 a tank and fills up with a little over 15 gallons which works out to 21mpg even with a little city driving thrown in.

I just had my t-belt and water pump done at 138k and my city mileage now hasn't been below 17.00001mpg (30% hwy) and I haven't changed my driving habits at all. My average before the maintenance was 15-16 but never over. My miles a tank went from 220-230 to about 260 miles in my last two tankfuls so we'll see if the mileage improvement hold true.

This is also with my Yak Loadwarrior up top so it'll be coming off til I really need it again. The rack really only affects highway mileage from my tests.

I guess if I could mellow out on the accelerator I might see 18 in the city.

I constantly see 19mpg and am usually in the 280 mile range before fill-up. I also am doing about 30% highway. I thought this was very normal.

Over the weekend, I drove from LA area to Mammoth Lakes. On the way up, I got 19.3mpg and got 22.2mpg coming back. Mostly going 70-75MPH. Easily got over 300 miles and took little over 14 gallons to fill it.

How much do you fillup with after that 280? Is your's manual or auto?

I had a '97 Runner 5 speed and I drove that a bit hard and I'd see 270ish with the same driving I do with my '99 auto.

I've never gotten less than 17 mpg and thats mostly around town. Gotta love the stick shift.

Simliar to fishingt4r, I drove from LA to June lake (20 min north of mammoth) and i was pulling my jet ski + loaded down moving up there for the summer and i got 20.2 on my way up. 60-65 all the way. 13.5 to fill up in bishop

About 14 and a hook. It's an auto.

You're actually closer to 20 and with only 30% highway you are doign pretty good.

I'm goiing to remove my rack and keep my MPH below 70 on the highway since 75-80mph is the norm on my highway jaunts and I'll see if I can get it to a steady 18 overall but I'll just be happy to stay over 17.

This tank now will be the first full tank after the air filter install. I'll update on my mileage.


My corolla always reeled in about 32 mpg. I put an airhog filter in and used synthetic blend oil and now get 35 mpg average.

The airhog filters seem to help. I'm too cheap to buy the k&n.

I noticed zero gains going from dino to synthetic at around 95k miles.

Oil has a negligible effect on MPGs unless you want to run pricey Royal Purple and you might see 1mpg but that's still can be argued but I have seena 4whp increase in the mid range on some engines that ran it.

Lots of people say that it has an effect on mileage.
This is my personal experience.
This is a 91 corolla 1.8 3spd I picked up a solid 3 mpg from the air hog filter and the synthetic blend oil.

The car is a daily driver that gets driven the exact same route unless I am traveling.

I did the air hog first, I think that made the most difference ( about 2 mpg). After a few tanks, I did the synthetic blend oil. This got me about a 1 mpg increase.

All you need is proper maintenance and anything that reduces friction or helps a motor breathe.

I am going to do the deckplate mod after this tank of gas with the airhog in the 4runner.

How much did you fill up with after the trip? Where were you traveling since that's the best tank I've ever read about on a 3rd gen.

It doesn't take me long to calculate my MPG.

I don't think there is a way for the car to do it on 3rd Gens.

The only real accurate way is to figure it out yourself since it seems a lot of people take the fuel computers as the final word and they are far from being accurate.
