On my old 4th gen, I was able to program the replacement transponder key myself. The instructions I found on the internet were weird and involved inserting and removing the original key x times, opening and closing the door y times, and then inserting the new key and voila, cheap eBay key programmed and ready to go.

Does the 5th gen have a similar programming procedure?

No, you need to either have the dealer do it, or "find" a copy of Techstream and the proper cable and do it yourself. There are a couple threads on here with instructions. When you install Techstream, do it in a virtual machine, preferably running Windows XP. The drivers for both the cable and the Techstream crack have some nasty malware in them that you probably don't want on your computer.
