35's with a 3" lift?

I know that it is a typical noob mistake to write a "how much lift to fit xx sized tires" thread, but I couldn't find any info on it. I am going to be getting a 96-98 4runner this summer and I was planning on getting the toytec 3" ultimate lift kit (with HD coils since I am going to be running a arb front w/winch and cbi rear with tire carrier) but I wasn't sure if a 3" lift would be good enough to fit 35's. I like to keep my rigs fairly low with big tires, but I don't want to do this to the point where the suspension isn't usable. I was also toying with the idea of getting a slightly wider stance and avoiding too much tire rub by getting a different backspaced wheel, but I don't know what the standard bs is and what I would need. I don't mind getting out the bfh and cutting out/reshaping the wheel well if necessary (but would be nice to keep it to a minimum). thanks for the help :)

Not going to happen! Unless you want to do a lot of cutting and tubing.
Those who run 33"s have rubbing and need to do a little pounding and cutting. Most add a small body lift too.

You will also need to do a gear change too.

Could I get away with a 3" lift and 34's as long as I got spacers? I don't mind getting out the bfh....lol.....if not I'm ok with 33's but what amount of lift should I be looking at for them? I'm sorry about all the questions lol...it's just that I don't want there to be a huge amount of extra space in the wheel well lol. I just want to keep it fairly low without compromising flex and the biggest tires I can fit without losing functionality. I'm not afraid to pound out parts of the wheel well if I have to

Space allows room for flex.
My front has over 9" of actual wheel travel. (~3" of droop and 6" of compression)
My rear has over 10" of actual wheel travel (~4" of droop and 6" of compression)

I have a 3"+ lift front and rear and my 32"s rub in front on the top of the inner fender liner, the rears are ~1/2 from the inner wheel well.

This is why most people run a 1"-1.5" BL with their 33"s.

Wheels/spacers/backspacing. The less BS (further out) the larger the acr the front wheels will take when turning. This will cause more rubbing on the rear of the wheel wells/firewall.

I had zero rubbing there until I added 1.25" wheel spacers.

Thanks, that clears up alot. I guess I have been thinking in terms of coilovers and not Ifs/coils.... I'll probably go 32's and a 3" lift since I don't like the idea of a body lift :)

Here's a link to show what someone else did.

35's on a 3rd gen 4runner

**edit Wasn't there an article of how to fit 35s on stock suspension? It was a good deal of work but it can be done if I remember that article correctly.

This is Tundra TRD front coils (~2.25") and OME 891 rear (~3"). Tires are BFG AT 265?70-16 (30.7")

dude even if you get it to not rub in the city with 35"s, won't it rub badly whenever you try to flex the suspension while offroad?

Yeah, even with a 3" susp. and a 2" body, you really need to tub the fenders for it to be functional off road. However, if you're gonna hack into the fenders and firewall, you could always just hack a little more like the Trails Less Traveled - 1996 4Runner (the one I think cj80cruiser was referring to) and then you don't need the body lift.

I'm running 295/70/17's with 3.5" lift in front and 4" in the rear, i rub BADLY in the rear any time i off road, and that is barely flexing, i would recommend 285's if your just doing a 3" lift, ill defiantly go smaller on my tires next time or ill add a 1.5-2" BL

 my grammar is terrible; no more android posts.

Anyways, this is why I have ran with 275x70xR16 to date and will probably go no higher than 276x75xR16. I have 2.5" front and 3.5" rear and I still get really really close to rubbing on the trails.

I have a 99 with a OME 3'' suspension lift, Toytec 2'' body lift, and 1'' wheel spacers and still rub at full turn. I'm running 35x12.5x15 Cooper sst's. I don't see how you could get 35's on with just a suspension lift.

This thread is from 2011. Guessing he figured out by now. Damn spam account reviving threads.

Okay so I know this thread is a few years old but it seems like a good place to share this. I realize most of the guys on this forum have 4WD 4Runners which after looking at everyone's responses require a body/suspension lift for 35s. However for the few people like me who run 2WD models I think I have an option that doesn't require a body lift. My 3rd gen has a Solo Motorsports Mid-Travel front end which contains a 3 inch lift spindle and adjustable coilovers. I only have 33s and so I actually lowered the coilovers and the front is still slightly higher than the rear which has a Rough Country Lift Spring. Whenever I have time I have a friend with 35x10.5 inch baja tires that I think will be perfect for 2WD guys. If anyone has any tips and suggestions please chime in. Thanks.

I think 32-33's with lift is a good compromise of flex and looks. From what I have read elsewhere, spacers will only make you rub more.

35's are probably not gonna happen without a lot of headache. Your best bet is to either do the lift and go with 33s or do a 2 inch body lift.

I currently have around 3.25 inches in the front and almost 5 inches in the rear. I clear my 33.5 inch 255/85R16 tires fine but I do rub the front when flexed and turning hard. A 1.5 - 2 inch body lift would let me clear 35s though.

Here's the tread on my lift to see what it looks like: Tundra/LC Lift + First Time Off Roading
