3rd Gen ABS pumping/motor noise?

Hi,

I have a 01 SR5 4x4 with the ABS system, I notice when I start the truck up after a few seconds I hear a noise coming from the ABS system and it sounds like it's pumping something or like an electric pump sound. Then I hear a click and it stops. I also hear this from time to time when I'm driving about town. I haven't specifically listened and tracked when it does it but i've randomly noticed it.

Is this normal? I have only had this truck for a month or two and it's done it since I got it, I assumed it was the ABS system doing it's startup check?

Anyone else confirm this please?

Look up "brake system" in the index should be there. They describe the hydraulic booster system.

Here's a scan of my paper copy of my manual on pg. 197....

my 2002 4runner happens so frequently, not just when the car starts but probably every 5-10 minutes!
i think i only noticed it go off once in my 1999 toyota 4runner.

whats up with this??

I don't know if mine was that active or not. If you think it's over active maybe you should have it looked at?
 
do you think replacing the pump would be dumb? i suppose the pump and the hoses should be checked. what about flushing the brake system?
 
Th motor can run if the brake system has air in the system.

If the electric motor fails, just get it rebuild. I am working on a 02 Montero full size brake master pump ABs booster motor. Eutron electricals build those motors.
 
I am trying to get to diagnose a similar noise and I have zoned in on the booster pump motor. I get the same normal pump noise from rebuilding pressure after a few brake applications, but the noise in question is different. It is a consistent "kkkkkkkk" "kkkkkkkk" noise every 2-3 seconds, but goes away when I rapidly pump the brakes. The noise will then sometimes go away after a few minutes of driving, but not always. I really want to avoid the stealership just to diagnose. I am not sure how to share a video, but here is the link to video of the noise.

My 01 doesn't make the ABS pump sounds, at all. I used to have an acura that did, every morning, it would 'whir' for a few seconds, click and stop.

Now what I hear does not at all sound like an ABS pump (any I've heard). It sounds like a 'raspy' noise, almost identical to a brake shield rubbing on the brake rotor. Tapping the brakes can make them go away all depending on exactly where the shield is bent and touching. Might check that in 30 seconds to be sure.

I only go to stealerships if I want OEM parts. If you need to, find a good local mechanic, there are many far more competent than at stealerships and less expensive.

Dealer response will be you need new MC.
Mine bit the dust last August I'll base my best guess on symptoms leading up to where I had no brakes.
Pump motor has bearings and brushes, my case brushes wore down stopped making contact could tap with hammer motor would run. Bearings have been the cause of some failures I'm thinking this might be the beginning of your case.

It does sound like that BUT this noise is happening when the car is stationary (and also when moving, and frequency does not correlate with engine or vehicle speed). Looking in the engine bay when it was happening I have isolated the noise to the "Booster Motor Pump" which vibrates when the noise is happening, and there is a red hydraulic hose connected that also vibrates when the noise is happening.
The last clue is that after continuing driving with the noise happening the dash suddenly lights up with ABS/TRAC, BRAKE, and a horrible warning noise, but no check engine light. This has happened twice now, and when I continue to drive it will eventually turn off the warning after a minute and the noise has also gone away.
I've researched in the Service Manual and in troubleshooting it seems to point to "Hydraulic brake booster power supply system (Faulty)" but don't have the means to follow the outlined instructions.

Started researching this issue before I bought my 01 in Feb 17 I had 4.5 yrs. to decide my course of action.
Have intentions of keeping this Runner for a while if I put 200k miles on this new M/C that equals $.0115 per mile operating cost, 100k mi equals $.023 per mile, 50k mi equals $.046/mi.
I'll take new over rebuilt when my and passenger lives depend on having brakes.
