3rd Gen Bolt in Cage

So we have been quietly working on a design for the 3rd Gen 4 Runner... No pics or designs for the public just yet.. I like to wheel my rig and I really don't feel all that safe. I have seen rigs flopped on simple trails and dirt roads. Just a quick Google search will yield some really bad damage even from light roll overs. Now will a cage save your Runner probably not... Will it save your life YES if designed and built correctly.

So consider this thread a market research thread..

How many of you would actually consider buying a bolt in cage system? I realize there are a lot of whats like:
price ( lest keep this one out for now, but figure it will be in the ball park of other bolt in style cages)
look:
space:

Those will come in due time.. Right now just consider if it is something you would be adding to your mod list.

I love the idea, mainly because NO ONE has them. With that being said, the reason why no one makes them is because the 3rd gens are still too nice to do the offroading that requires them. Because of that, no one wants to shell out the money when they know they wont ever put their rig in those kinda of extremeties.

Personally, if the price was right.. I might buy one. However, I'd think too much into it and probably wait a couple years until my vehicle becomes more of an offroad rig and less of a DD.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are a lot of uses for a roll bar.. and they can save your life on and off the road. I just don't see this becoming a huge commodity for another couple years when you see more of these trucks being sas'd and offroaded more than daily driven.

I'd love to see one though, I think if I saw pics of it or in real life I might just be antsy enough to get one.

Great feedback ... I just see the cost of a TJ ( jeep wrangler 97-2006) as a cooperatively priced rig.. Are you saying Jeep owners wheel their rigs more ...:AK47: Just kidding...

I see more 3rd Gen getting dirty these days then ever before.. Just look at our little SoCal Run 30 rigs..... As people start to really realize the world beyond pavement I see the 3rd Gen becoming a great plat form for wheeling...

I see an exo-cage being a much better idea than and internal cage, cause (correct me if im wrong), if you roll this 4runner and it has an internal cage, then all it really does is help save you as driver/passenger in the vehicle and doesnt help the body stay in good shape, but the exo-cage would absorb most of the hit and help minimize body damage in a roll over situation (at low speed and off road).

I agree that an Exo may save the runner to fight another day.. However, They don't always look that good.. I would much rather do an Exo cage as it is 100 times easier to produce then a bolt in cage.. I have thought about doing an Internal/external cage on my 3rd gen... I have done this in the past for XJs
( Cherokee/ Grand Cherokee).. The last one I did is what brought Pikeman to my shop..

If it's a good price and a good design, I'd love to have one. I'm all for armor because bumpers, sliders, and cages still protect you in road crashes when you're not on the trail

I would be up for an internal roll cage as I still use mine as a DD. I don't want an Exo cage driving down the freeway. I am not looking for something that I can roll down a mountain multiple times, I'm looking for something that will save my life in that very rare instance I flop.

If it was tight to the body and didn't take up all cargo/passenger room. It would be nice to strap some stuff to the cage - CO2/tire/ fire extinguisher/etc.

just make it out of cardboard tube so we can get an idea before you spend time/money on DOM and welding.

I mean the full package- Plate front and rear bumper, Rock sliders and an exo cage that went from the bumpers, around the wheel wells, attached to the sliders, back up over the wheel well and attached to the other bumper.

It would offer the body protection from trees and rocks and even mall traffic.
It would also provide some protection if you were to roll on your side, but not on the roof.

That video is a classic... But if you notice it landed on the front clip more then the hood..

I agree with you 100 % Full exo tied to the frame and bumpers would be awesome.. I just think it would be an even smaller market.. To bad you are so far away.. We could set you up..........Road trip

Kinda tedious, I know, but it would be awesome if it fit along with the cargo cover. One of the reasons I don't have a 1st gen roll bar.

I agree with the others though, I'd love a place to mount and hang stuff like bags, maglite, fire extinguisher, hi lift... the tubing could easily fit between the back seat and the main frame of the cargo cover when the headrest clips aren't attached.
