3rd Gen Coil Pack Test

Hey everybody, I wanted to get some clarification on testing my coil packs. I have a volt meter that reads ohms, but last night I tried to test the coil pack on the cylinder that is getting a misfire read (#5). I don't think I tested it correctly since I tested all 3 of them (including one that I had installed new 6 months ago) and they all came back as 001. I may not be touch the volt tips to the correct places.

Here is what I did. Please let me know where I messed up.

1. Disconnected negative battery cable
2. Removed air cleaner hose
3. disconnected high-tension cord
4. disconnected electrical connector
5. where the electrical connector plugs into the coil pack, i used the two prongs from the volt meter to get a reading.


Any help is much appreciated.

one thing you can do is swap coil packs and see if the code changes to the cylinder that you swapped the questionable one to.

Yea, I thought about that, but I would rather just test it if I can. Otherwise, I have to wait for another misfire and then get a new reading.
 
if the problem is intermittent or heat related, it may be tough to reproduce 'on the bench' ...

if it's truly bad, it should not take long to reproduce a misfire on another cylinder

primary coil resistance (harness plug)
cold .67-1.05 Ohms
hot .85-1.23 Ohms

secondary (wire plug + sparkplug hole )
cold 9.3-16.0 Kohms
hot 11.7-18.8 Kohms

when you say harness plug, are you talking about the part on the coil pack where the electrical connector plugs in?

That is where I tested but like I said, I kept getting a reading (for all 3 coils) of 001

there is no way all three will be cooked ur setting on the ohm meter is wrong

I have always been under the impression that if one of the coils is bad, the two cylinders that it's providing spark to will misfire, is that true?

I had a bad coil and you could tell just by the sound it was down 2 cylinders. I drove it 2 miles to the garage to figure out what was wrong and it never gave me a misfire code.

I do not like Toyota’s misfire detection at all. When I forgot to plug in a coil on my 04 grand Cherokee within 10 seconds on a cold start it gave my the misfire code for the cylinder that I forgot to plug in the coil after spark plug change.

When I was diagnosing a cylinder 2 misfire last month (that ended up being an injector that ohmed out at 23 ohms), I clearly remember checking the coils while cold and they were all exactly 1 OHM

No, not necessarily. Especially if the fault is in the boot, it can short the spark to the block at the cyl it sits on top of, but then the other will still work. Also, even if they both misfire, I have no confidence the flaky detection system will identify both.

If the fault is an open, then for sure both will be without spark and misfire.

This may sound like a stupid question but I just bought this 4runner 6 mos ago and I am not that familiar with how the engine operates. I am use to working with VWs that have coil packs for each cylinder where the 4runner has only 3 on cylinders 1-3-5.....My question then is can a bad coil cause misfiring on cylinders 2-4-6.

I am getting a recurring misfire on cylinder 2 where I have swapped plugs and replaced coil wires and the misfire remains. So can a bad coil pack on the other side cause this misfire since the plug wire connects adjacent to the coil pack. The reason I ask is bc the coil wire connects right next to the coil pack and it must connect to the ECU right there next to the coil pack.

A bad coil can cause a misfire on only 1 of the 2 cylinders it services. Try swapping ignition coil locations and see if the misfire follows. If it doesn't follow the ignition coil then it's time for a compression test.
