3rd Gen Tacoma suspension swap onto 4th Gen 4Runner

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

My buddy just swapped out his new 3rd gen TRD Off Road 4x4 tacoma (2016) suspension with new icon equipment. He told me that I could have his stock TRD off road suspension. Now, the question is: is this possible to swap onto a 2005 4runner V8 SR5 4x4? Of course he has leaf springs in the rear and I have coil overs in the rear. I was also thinking adding spacers for a little bit of height on the ol' low rider 4th gens.

If so, what parts do I need to make this happen? What mods will need to be made?

I have looked and haven't found any threads. If you know of any and can point me in the right direction that would be sweet. I appreciate any and all advice.

Bumping this. There are some mentions of the 3rd gen Taco swap in the main Taco suspension thread, but I haven’t found good lift numbers. the coils and shocks are very different between 2nd and 3rd gen Taco.

I recently got a set of 3rd gen TRD off road shocks and springs, and I’m wondering what lift to expect. The 3rd gen Taco on a 2nd gen Taco gives ~1” lift. The 2nd gen Taco on a 4th gen T4R gives ~1.5”.

Anybody done this swap and take good measurements?
What’s ride quality like? I know the 2nd gen Taco shocks and springs were for a much lighter vehicle, but supposedly, the 3rd gen Taco weighs about what a 4th gen weighs, so it should be a closer swap.
 
Bump on this as well. I have a 2005 SR5 4th gen with the 4.0 engine. Just bought 3rd Gen Taco suspension from a DCLB truck so Ill keep yall updated on my lift build. Anyone here down in SoCal willing to help out? Ill have In-n-out on me! Planning of doing this next week.
 
Anyone figured this out? I have a set of 5100 that I would like to use on my brother’s 3rd gen taco. I know the fronts will work but more interested in the rears.
 
3rd Gen Tacoma Shocks

From what I have read everything is compatible from the (2016-2019) Taco's. I have all parts and am pairing the rear with a set of Bilstein B12 1.8" Rear Springs....The rear shocks need the hour glass 9.8108G lower bushing that looks like it will press fine into the shock. It does seem the XREAS lower shock mount is beefier and larger than the Bilstein's but I assume if that lower bushing that everyone uses fits into the new shock, then everything will work out fine. My set is from a 2017 Tacoma Off Road, luckily front coils were assembled and compressed! I also got the UCA's off the truck. I plan on swapping all parts this weekend and will post updates. I read through most all of those threads and couldn't find anyone with the 3rd Gen Taco Suspension that has posted successful yet.

I think with the 3rd gen Taco front shocks you will get about 2” up front or near that.

Looked like 2nd gen Taco shocks were giving 4th gens 1” of lift up front, I know from putting 2017 Taco shocks on my 2013 Tacoma I got right about 1” of lift. So that means you’ll end up with an extra inch of lift over 2nd gen shocks when put on a 4runner.
 
Got over two inches in front and back, it rides really well with the Bilstein coils, it is almost perfectly level with the B12 rear coils, IMO FJ rears will be to short for the 3rd Tacoma Shocks

Hey man, this post is quite old, but I am considering putting 2016 TRD offroad front shocks and springs on my 2003 v8 limited. Did you end up putting the tacoma shocks and springs on your 4runner? If so id like to know how it turned out. I want to put the tacoma suspension on the front with bilstein 4600s in the rear to level it out my 4runner. Thanks in advance!
 
This is correct! Front goes right in, rear shocks need the bushing. I’d suggest putting in FJ rear springs to match the rear shocks. I’m pretty happy with my upgrade (2nd Gen fronts) but I have a set of 3rd Gen ones to install soon as I’ve been told they offer a little more lift.

Which FJ springs specifically is recommended. If not using fj spring what are my other option ?

Thanks for all the info here! Which B12 rear coils did you use? I've found 2 different sets with similar names:

Bilstein B12 (Special) Series Suspension Kit - 36-281817 - $198
Bilstein B12 Special Rear Suspension Kit - 36-281824 - $249

Also, with the lift you got, did you need to do anything with your UCAs?
Any pics?
This is my daily driver and won't go off road so just looking to replace my original suspension, get a little lift and not break the bank.

So I may be able to grab a pair of 2019 Taco TRD Pro front coils and Bilsteins, along with the UCA's for $150. I know this is a direct bolt in for the most part, but does anybody know if using the Taco UCA's will give me enough adjustment to also add a 1-1.5" spacer as well and keep the alignment in spec? And am I correct in expecting about a 2-3" lift in my '06 V6 2wd? Seems like a great deal if so.

I just picked up a set of 2019 TRD Offroad Bilstein front struts and rear shocks for my 2004 SE V8 with xreas. I was thinking about ordering MOOG FJ 4WD rear coils from Rockauto as they are available for a pretty good price

The B12 mentioned above will be more than what I paid for the set

edit: found some 2019 trd offroad 5th gen rear springs

I just did this swap (2019 Taco TRD Suspension @ under 6,000 mi onto my 2005 Sport V6 X-Reas @ 207,000 mi). I ended up gaining about 2 1-2” up front, and about 1/2” rear (I’m still using my stock coil springs in the rear for now). Thanks to everyone in this forum and on this and other threads that helped by posting their experiences. I’m not trying to hijack this thread, and felt like posting my response here instead of a new thread will help people looking for info like the OP not have to look at separate threads. Can someone point me where to order the rear shock bushings, should I get them at Toyota Dealership for oem 4th gen shocks or are there poly ones available somewhere?
