3rd gen vs 4th gen

ABS is actually really wonderful. That whole thing about its just for people that can't drive is a sterotype. People couldn't drive right when cars DIDN'T have ABS plus there will ALWAYS be someone stupid behind the wheel. The current version of ABS was honed on the race track so you can not only brake later and harder but have more stability when entering the corner. Trust me drive a nicely setup car with and without ABS and tell me which has better feed back. Thats the whole point of ABS is CONTROL! If I remember right my friends 02 has ABS as well. Now for this whole 3rd gen vs. 4th vs. 5th is just a pissing match to me. I've driven almost all versions both on the road and off it and they handle very well and can take a beating. Now if your talking stock 3rd is slightly better off road, while the 4th is better on road but if your talking modded then it only comes down to two things, MONEY and TIME.

Heck alot of 4th gen guys swap their cases out with cable.pull atlases for more Reasons then just the lower gear.

Really??? So, you're saying that most 4th gen guys who put in Atlas TCs because the stock TC is a POS???!! Wow, that's a first! Atlas TCs are strong and have lower ratios, but that would apply on both 4th gen and 3rd gens equally. As far as i know, TCs on Toyotas are the least of their problems. In fact, the TC ratio has stayed the same thru the years.

yea and how many folks here who offroad post pics of their bone stock rigs in the boonies?

(crickets)

my point being the 4r is as much built for the street as your subaru outback. the whole suv running over stuff thing is aspirational. the most effective brand being land rover. what's the ratio of range rovers on 22s to range rovers on 17s with AT tires? 10000:1? heck, even the G wagon. yes, the emperor is naked.

and it's OK to compare gen to gen especially in a thread that calls for it rather obviously.

coming from stanwood, your ability to write and comprehend suits you.

i'm not even going to begin to talk about supply chain mgmt, streamlined business processes, nor anything else related to manufacturing a mass produced vehicle because you've provided enough for me not to with your point #1. WAHHAAH internet man.

these cars weren't designed for the .001% of owners who offroad their 4Rs. they're sold to work well on pavement and marketed to those aspirations (not people) to get out in the wilderness to see some dirt.

given the breadth of utility to meet the needs of the typical 4r buyer (families), the 4th gen is the superior truck compared to the 3rd. aside from the whole engine discussion (v8 v. v6), i like the 5th gen better. the v6 in the 3rd gen is not even in the conversation.

so you skipped the 4th gen. good. the 3rd gen was never even on the radar for me cuz it's just too dated.

so if we're to debate the merits of both gens as a complete body of work, it's clear that the 4th gen is an absolute upgrade to the 3rd. the 5th gen is not as much a leap, but it is an improvement over the 4th.

Haha , right........my job is to design and build these steam lined production lines you speak of and I personally deal in million dollar contacts for materials and supplies , I can tell you even with the things you mentioned retooling alone gobbles that up along with price increases in other things, I personally had to deal with the crazy spike in steel prices , you know what we did raised the price of our tooling to reflect that , and you would be right if toyota didn't also produce various other models of cars and only focused on the 4runner when taking r&d, you act as if the whole of toyota thinks about the 4runner.....But sure feel free to drop a few more buzzwords comment on my poor grammar and spelling complied from a cell phone , ridicule me for.moving to a place where I could buy my own house.and actually pay for it, by all means, have at it if it makes you feel like a big internet tough guy , I could care less.

Again my Only point from the very beginning, [who had no reading Comprehension again ?]
Is that the 3rd gen is better off road from the box....never.said.as a whole...never even suggested it .

Imo your an idiot.and I'm.done with you ...

At least thai is making me look stupid by sticking to the points and conceding when it's valid , pay attention, this how adults argue/debate .....

Lol whoa whoa cowboys , I never said anything about the 4th gen was a pos, just saying some ditch it in favor of a less complicated system that's all and that was my only point that some prefer less computer and more mechanical, not commenting on anything to do with the.4th gen there , it was just an example of.a few 4th gen owners feeling the same.way as I do about mechanical vs. electrical , that was.all , responding to abs in next.post

From 1999 and up, the TCs are similarly complex....

I don't know who this guy is but I like him , lol

Yeah you guys got me thinking now my views on abs might be outdated , I know I don't like it on my truck
Like said above it's probably got better over the years and thai telling me what's up and the improvements is making me think differently about that one ,

That.said though the most rugged truck on earth.is a 80s era hilux, in the most remote places on earth those things are still rolling tough and you have to partially credit it to the lack of things like abs computers, fuel injection And such, but then again I may just be in the old timer mindset , lol

The only point in this whole thread that I don't think is my own personal preference is from the box generally speaking the 3rd gen is better then the 4th.gen off.road...

The abs transfer case , mechanical vs. electrical , blah blah , is just me , and what I think about it by no means gospel.

I've been enjoying this and learning a thing or two in the process except when people start being stupid and go with personal attacks instead of making valid points , I don't know about you guys but I'm enough of a man to admit when im wrong.

And I'm wrong ..maybe...on the abs thing , as I trust what you guys are saying and it makes sense I just need to own a truck with a newer.system in it I guess.

I still feel though that in the life of the truck it is cheaper and more reliable not to have abs or computer controlled components,
Again not a 3rd vs. 4th thing here
Just a general statment

Yeah and you can see why I got multi mode, its just how I feel about it , no way on the vsc and trac for me , I was even worried about my push button 4wd on mine I prefer.a lever , where you can manually shift the case from the case it's self , like the old chain driven jeep ones np 242 or 231 style,

Again personal preference on that and I could be out dated in that view but hey , its how I feel about it you know .

4th gens + remind me of yuppie soccermoms. that is all. get a 3rd gen and save some money.

3rd gen is just too outdated now. So forget about it unless you're into driving the classics.

I'll take my side curtain airbags and other safety features along with the power, handling, and ride;)

That's funny because in canada they are starting to import the diesels from japan under the classic vehicle laws , lol

I just can't get into the styling on the 4th gen. 3rd gen looked great, 5th gen looks amazing. 4th gen really just doesn't look rugged enough. Like izzard said, it reminds me of something my mom would drive.

of course you do. for all those millions of dollars you deal with you're relegated to driving a suspect to rusting, dated, sub $10k suv in stanwood?

the 4th gen is better. period. 3rd gen was good when it came out, but it got insta-dated the moment the 4th was released. the end.

plenty o' moms were loving the 3rd too, buddy. but then they too got tired of the cramped interior, the wheezy engine, and the frosted lens halogen headlights.

the 5th gen is clearly the best looking, i agree.

but the 4th gen is better looking than the 3rd.

since you guys are bringing up ur moms, i must say this one in particular is one bad muthafuqn truck :D

Not saying the 4th gens are ugly. They can look good. Just doesn't have the off-road pedigree that the 3rd and 5th gens do, in my opinion. :)

Pedigree?? Maybe i misunderstood the definition of such. If we're talking about a Kia Sportage vs. a 4runner, then i can see you say that the 4runner has the off-road pedigree from 4runner generations of body-on-frame SUVs with off-road capability. Or say a comparison b/w a BMW M3 vs. Lexus ISF, where the M3 has pedigree vs. ISF being new to market.

But, what we're talking about here is comparing 4runners b/w 3rd generation and 4th generation (and 5th gen). You can't claim that the 3rd gen (or 5th gen) has pedigree over the 4th gen because they are 4runners afterall...with very similar basic design (solid rear axle, body-on-frame, midsize, etc.). Now, if the 4th gen had a minivan unibody and independent suspension, then yeah, i kinda see your point.

Yeah, i just don't get the pedigree thingy....
