3rz Thermostat

So, over heated the other day. Had my wife and son in the truck while I ran in to our local dive shop to get a new snorkel and mask; 40 minutes later I walk out to radiator fluid coming out the over flow ( maybe 20 or so oz on the ground, so it wasn't too long). Quickly turn off the truck and open the hood to let her cool down. 20 minutes turn her back over and she is running at normal temp (just below half). Checked the oil and there were no signs of radiator fluid; oil to my surprise look like it was just changed ( been burning oil the past two oil changes, switched oils and added some Lucas and I am all smiles now :wof

I am thinking thermostat got stuck. Picked a new one and gasket up today at my local dealership.

Now to my question . Do I really need to drain the fluids (radiator and block) to do the thermostat on the 3rz-fe? I cracked the two nuts on it and some fluids started to drain (to be expected) but I wasn't sure how much was going to come out so I tightened back up. Any guidance would be helpful, I really don't want to spend the money to drain all the fluids and re-add. I don't have the time to do a full flush and put Toyota Red in at the moment as I have to leave for a trip across the state on Friday.

Just an update for anyone who cared, lol. I drained the antifreeze. I had to tell myself to stop being so lazy. :rofl:

Burped the system temps held normal the entire time. Lets hope i don't see any more rising temps. Which could mean the water pump is about to take a dump.
