3RZ With 33's

Hey guys, quick question. I have stock base model with 225/75/15, and I am going to be getting a lift and new wheels an tires here soon. The lift size will be dependent on how big of tires I want to get. If I just go with 265/75/16's, then I think I will go with about 2in lift, to keep the fender gap from looking funny. But if I go with 285/75/16's then I will do a 3in lift, but the problem is I don't really want to regear. I have the 2.7 with 5 speed, if I went with the 33's would it be a bad idea to not regear? This is my dd so I want to keep it somewhat driveable. Any other tire size, lift size suggestions? Thanks.

I think that would be a bad idea. It's not directly comparable, but 5th gear is useless on a 22RE truck with 33s and stock gears, can't even maintain freeway speed. The 3RZ has a fair bit more power, but even so would be super sluggish.

What gear ratio is in the truck now?

4.10 and 33s might be usable with a 3RZ, but it'll bring the suck, especially at your elevation. What about 235/85r16? Less rotating mass than a 265/75, less wear and tear on suspension and steering components, better mileage, etc...

Yeah, those would look good with a 3in lift. Would there be any rubbing do you think? Do you have any pics of a 4r with to that setup?

I don't have any, but I know there's guys on the board that run that combo. Try this search (site=www.toyota4runner.org 235/85r16) and dig through the posts, I'm sure you'll find photos. I don't see any way you'd rub with 235s and a three inch lift.

I don't know of any skinny 245s. 255/85r16s exist in a couple flavors, I run the KM2s in that size on my '85 and I love them. They're a little taller than 285/75r16s though, you'll have the same gearing issues.

The manual transmission helps a lot. If your truck is stock otherwise, with no added weight, 285's would definitely be slow but might not be too bad.

I have 285's and a lot of added weight with my 4.10's and the V6. I'm not happy with the gearing off road, but on road driving is totally fine. In fact, I wouldn't want any lower gearing on the highway.

So even if I put the truck in low when I am offroading, will it be really bad on power?

The 3rz with 33s wouldn't be a killer but you will notice your clutch wear especially off road. The 3rz has a bunch o torque but I would say if you do get the tires put at least a 4.56 swap in your future.

It's not so much the power offroad. It's when crawling at very low speeds, I often have to ride the clutch to prevent the truck from stalling out.

I plan to go to a dual transfer case set up to fix this.

I have a 2.7 5 speed with 4.10 and I've run stock big tires 265 70 16 for winter and 31x10.5 x 15 in the summer. I have a 3 inch lift too.

I would not go 33s without a re gear to 4.56. I just wouldn't.

It's very drive able with 31s, but it would be too slow with 33s I feel...

Drove mine for a year w/ 33's and 3rz/5spd...not that bad and could use 5th gear still. I say do it:driving:

33 R17's will be going on my 3RZ/5spd (4:10) in a few weeks. I'll let you all know how it is.
I don't think the OP has 4:10 gears with the stock 15" wheels. My Base model came with the upgraded 265/70R16 tires.

I'm not sure what gears I had (replaced w/ 4.88's), but I had the OG pizza cutters w/ 15" factory steelies.

I have the 3.4 5 speed 4.10 combo.
With 265/75R16s it struggles in 1st in 4hi. If I climb something or there's some mud in the ruts it bogs down and stalls.

On road sucks too. I feel like a properly geared rig should be able to start rolling with just slowly releasing the clutch pedal. Not so much now. I have to slip the clutch and give it some juice to get it going.

I'm either going to get 4.56/4.88s can't decide which or a supercharger to make up for the loss of power soon.

Gears plus a rear locker and labor are close to a supercharger kit.

panda4r, I have the exact same 4runner. It had 225/75r15's on it when I bought it. I have since installed a 3" lift, AOR front bumper with Warn m8000s winch, Stubbs sliders, and Shrockworks skids (full set)...so quit a bit of extra lbs for the little 2.7. When I installed the lift, I installed a new set of 235/85r16 Duratrac's on stock Toyota rims. I like the tall skinny tires, but I can tell you, there is no way I would run 33's without regearing. In fact the next mod I make will be a regear (to 4.88's) and ARB rear locker. Stashing $$$'s currently.
My rig dogs up any incline on the road, and I have to use 4 low too often (I feel), when off road. I love this little 4Runner, and plan on keeping it a long time, but I do want 4.88's.

Hope this helps.

Be careful with 4.88's and 33's. That is probably too much gear for such a small tire. You'll be screaming at any highway speed. 4.56 would be the way to go if you were going to stay 33's. Plus you can get junkyard 4.56 front and rear. Obviously this is all moot if you are going to 35's, then go for the 4.88's. I had. 5.29's and 35's with my 3rz and always wished it was. 4.88...till I got 37's and it was perfect

Thanks for the insight. I don't want to spend that much money, and end up regretting my decision. Have you ran 4.88's and 33's on your rig? What kind of RPM's were you turning at 65 mph?

:thanks:

There may be some other issues with your vehicle (or your driving style, no offence) if this is the case.

Going from the stock 265/70r16 to a 265/75r16 is simply not a big enough difference to warrant a regear or even notice much of a difference. You are going from a 30.6" tire to a 31.6" tire, giving a difference of 3.3%. A gear ratio of 4.23 would return you to the equivalent of 4.10's and the 265/70r16. Sure, the 265/75 will weigh slightly more than the stock 265/70, but again, it is so minimal that the difference would not be noticeable.

I ran 265/75r16's for over 2 years and am now on heavy 285/75r16 mud tires with lots of added vehicle weight in the form of armor, winch, etc. I did a wheeling trip on sunday with a full car - over 700lbs in passengers, as well as a full size spare, hilift jack, tools and some gear.

The truck is not fast, but its no slug either. I had no problem maintaining 80 mph on the highway even with all the mentioned weight. In fact, I find this gearing setup is actually quite ideal on the highway as I can maintain low rpm's and cruise along just fine in 5th gear. The only time I really want lower gearing is in the rocks. I run some fairly technical rocky trails (for ifs) and I will admit, the 4.10's and 33's is terrible in these situations and I am constantly riding the clutch to prevent stalling. That being said, I think I would feel the same way with the stock 31's and 4.10.

In short, I will be investing in a dual transfer case setup before re gearing my diffs. The lack of double low range is limiting me way more than the ifs and I know that 4.88's or 5.29's would be unbearable on the highway with 33's.

The need for regearing is seriosuly over hyped on this forum IMO. Go to any other yota forum and you'll see what I mean...
