3vze Headers and melted fuel line

hey guys.

mostly I lurk on this site but am quite active over on YOTATECH.

just thought I would provide some links over to YT in regards to a near-disaster we had yesterday with my son's 1988 4runner which we had rebuilt and put headers on.

despite what I thought was being plenty careful in regards to heat-shielding things, the shielding was not competition for the headers and the fuel line melted and sprayed a significant amount of gas.

so...even though we had shielded and tied everything so that it would not be touching the header, apparently a year+ later it was time for it to happen.

so for those of you who may have made this modification (headers), please go...NOW and check to make sure they are NOT touching anything.

this could have ended terribly, but thankfully it did not.

Why don't you use exhaust wrap from some place like summit racing? It might greatly reduce the temps at the pipes and in the engine bay. If you don't mind me asking, what brand of headers did you use?

those are Doug Thorley headers.

we WILL be using header tape on the wire looms and fuel line after the repair.

CANNOT (at risk of voiding the header's warranty) wrap the headers themselves.

Losing the warranty or not, preventing the engine bay from catching on fire is worth using the heatwrap IMO .

why not switch to a metal fuel line in that area to prevent it from happening?

You might ask them about getting the headers ceramic coated if the company does not want you to wrap them. You might consider asking them about the warranty and taping them, doubt they will have an issue for a street driven unit. How are you liking the DT headers so far(besides the heat factor)? I'm thinking of doing them on our 1990.

the slip-joint design sucks. otherwise they are good. the truck was basically parked and never driven by us so I have no way to compare before and after as far as performance goes. some get the joints welded (also voids the warranty). after a year of use they still look much like brand new.
