I personally liked the 4.88 combo with 285s. And I was running BFG KO2s which run on the smaller side of 33s. I would have been just fine with it as it was. I felt that the 4.88s made it feel a lot closer to stock gearing. AND.. that gearing with 285s was nice and slow in 4 low out on the trail for technical sections. I think 4.88s give you the flexibility to pick your size tire and be comfortable. I am happy with the gearing, even with the 35s.
I didn't think that the RPMs were crazy or anything at highway speeds. I thought that I wrote down somewhere what they were but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
Do you recall what the impact to your fuel mileage was?
