I admit some 4Runners do look soft and around here more women drive 4th gens than I see men in them but some stock 3rd (especially '01-02) gens do need help when they come shod with car tires and the fancy Limited Running boards don't scream tough either. My mom's 99 Limited simply fits her but if I had it it would get some toughening up.

The 4-runner does need some toughening up. All SUV's do for that matter. Park a 4-runner and a Sillverado side by side, and ask people as they walk by what they would rather drive in an offroad situation. My bet is on the truck stacking up the most votes. SUVs today aren't anything like what they used to be. Too many "soccer mom" influences. They just aren't purchased for their off road prowess anymore. I hate to say it, but they are moving the way of a glorified minivan that will never see any more offroad action than the occasional gravel driveway. Thank God there are still people around like many of us that know what to do with a capable drivetrain!

Look at what happened to the Durnago which looks like a mini-van on steroids more than what it used to look like which was off road capable so some of the soccer mom style is intentional since that's where the sales are at.
Plus the whole oversize chrome blingy wheel fad doesn't add ruggedness to a stock 4wd 4Runner or any off road capable SUV but that isn't the point of that fad either.

Do I think the 4th gen is a tough as a 3rd gen , yes . I see a lot of women driving 3rd gens too. Do I think the 3rd has off road advantages and looks more like a truck , Yes most definitely.
Do I think they are both gender friendly , yes , do I see more women drive them , yes most definitely .
Do I see more women driving Xterra's than men , again , most definitely .
Happens with everything , I just hate that the 4Rv is so low and looks less like a truck and more like an SUV , compared to a 3rd gen .
The off road truck is a full size 4x4 p/u around here , even the H2 has worn out its welcome as an off road vehicle , since they are blinged out.
Do I see more men driving H3's , most definitely.
I feel this truck has great capabilities on/off road , yes , do I feel its viewed a family , maybe even womanly SUV , yes partially , but like the examples about pretty much stands as with everything on the road.
Id you want tough looking , but a Tacoma , Tundra , or other full size truck . Much more manly looking if your concerned about how you look behind the wheel.

Keep in mind TMC follows recommendations from the IIHS which suggested lowering bumper height so passengers in small vehicles have a chance of surviving a crash with little if any injuries. A higher stance increases injuries for the other driver.Falls said:

Whenever this subject comes up it is always interesting to see what people think. Go Google "chick cars" and see what you get.
It seems that people publish top 5 or top 10 lists of "chick" and "dude" cars.
Funny thing is that is you look at enough of these lists some cars appear on BOTH the "chick" and "dude" lists.
Then there are vehicles that consistently appear on one of the other.
Opinions are like A**holes, everybody has one and is usually not afraid to express them.
Some people listen to the opinions of others and are shaped by those opinions while others could care less and do what they want.
I have owned Volkswagens for the last 28 years (still do).
Driving a brand of vehicle that is not in the mainstream of the automotive world here in the USA was never dull.
Did I care what people said or thought, not really. The vehicles were not trouble free but I enjoy drving them.
In 2004 when I purchased my 4Runner the reaction of some in the VW community was likened to me committing mass murder.
Did I care, absolutely not. Some in that community thought I should have purchased the VW SUV instead.
Funny how after I laid all the facts on the table (cost, capabilities, reliability) they not only understood but agreed the Toyota was a good choice.
Bottom line is that people should drive what they want to drive, keep it stock or modify the heck out of it.
It is there ride, they are paying for it and as long as they are happy, who cares what others think?

I've thought about starting a thread similar to this. I have to admit that 90% of the 4Runners I see are driven by women. I think it may be because we live in a suburb of Denver with lots of soccer moms etc. I don't see anything really wrong with it....they must just have good taste in vehicles.

Since I bought my 4Runner in late December, I've tried paying attention to see what kind of drivers are driving the 4th gen. To this day, I've only seen about 3 or 4 male drivers out of the many I've seen.
Does this make it a "chick" car? Heck no. Show them some of the pictures of the off-roaders in this forum. Maybe they'll think otherwise. Like another member said, I also saw a lady driving a lifted F350.

I agree with Mark86. I see a 50/50 split in 4th Gen 4Runners in Chicago.
On the other hand I also see a 50/50 split driving Tahoes/Suburbans/Expeditions which are based on a full size pick-up and invalidates the Toby Keith/Howie Long argument that you have to have a full-size truck to be a "real man". I'd rather have the 4Runner because it's actually fun to drive versus driving my father's land yacht 4x4 Expedition (which has a ton of little things breaking left and right and needed a complete transmission rebuild).
The Lexus GX is however 90% female-driven in my neck of the woods.
