4" Speakers, 2nd Gen '95, WHAT FITS!?

Okay, so everyone knows the speakers suck... esp. the ones in the dash.

What speakers will fit these? I'm pretty sure four inches, but when I go to crutchfield.com they only have 1 pair of speakers that "fits" my car... but they have more 4" speakers that one.... wtf?


will any 4" speakers fit?

i bought a pair of 4" Fosgates that fit without any drilling/cutting. to make sure, I took out one of the old speakers with me to the car stereo shop and compared it to what they have. once i found a pair that was similar in depth and had the same mounting holes i was good to go.

I installed a set of 4" Infinity Kappas in my buddy's '95 4R a while back with some minor modifications. The front speakers are in a plastic enclosure and the speaker magnets were a bit too wide & deep to fit perfectly. I had to use the Dremel tool to shave off some of the back corner of the housing and then seal off the opening with some silicone caulking. The opening was actually pretty small. Unless you feel comfortable about doing the mods, I would stick with whatever fits. The sound quality and clarity improved quite a bit, especially the highs. I also installed a set of 5.25" Infinity Kappas in the rear (6 or 6.5 might've fit w/some mods). good luck

I got Polk audio db400s and db6500s for the rear. Their 4" drivers will fit, but for a small difference in the depth of the tweeter because there is a grill on the tweeter. You can install and let the dash cover bulge slightly or pry off the grill for the tweeter (which does nothing to sound) or you can shave the inside of the grill on the dash to make it fit. I listened to the Polks and Infinitys at the Crutchfield store. Those are the only two that he would recommend and I didn't like the tinty highs of the Infinitys. Just my preference. Both are very good speakers.

it has been a couple years, i have no idea. i would assume that any 4" Fosgate speaker would fit with little to no modifications.

So the for rear, you would recommend 5.25" (instead of 6.5) for ease of installation..drop in and swap out?

I agree with lippstuh that Crutchfield says 5.25 and 6.5 for fitting the rear but other people said from real world experience that 5.25 fits better. I suppose I could get off my lazy butt and unbolt and measure it before buying something and having to return it or dremel the opening. I'm not very good with a dremel plus, I rather not make anything stick out or fall out if it wasn't meant to.
I wouldn't mind using (comps) 4inch mids in the factory front location and place the tweeter on the A pillar (if possible). Then just use coax 5.25 or 6.5 in the rear plus a sub.

On this subject of stereo. How hard is it to run power wire from the battery through the firewall to the rear interior to install an amp?
I just bought my 4runner last week (dirt cheap...talking GA red clay cheap) and haven't read the Haynes manual yet. I've got so much cosmetic interior surgery to do on this vehicle before I'm satisfied with it.

I had a very easy time running power wire thru the firewall just left of the Brake MasterCylinder and just above/right of the steering stem while looking at the firewall in the engine bay. There is a nice grommet there that you can slice open and it feeds right under the dash just above the pedals. I went to the right side of the vehicle from there and ran under the right side kick panel and doorsills (which are easy to remove with four screws) and then finally popped up behind the rear seats. I ran the RCA cables and remote turn-on power down the left side of the car to keep them separate.

The Infinity Reference/Kappa series has oversized drivers/woofers. Therefore the 5.25" fits just right w/o any other mods other than breaking off 2 tabs that sticks out of the front of the speaker enclosure which prevents the speaker from sitting flat. Simply use a pair of pliers or some cut-off tool to remove the tabs. I think the 6.5" Infinity speakers would be a bit snug, but would require more modifications. However, other brands of 6.5" speakers for the rear should fit w/o any modding (depends on the magnet size/depth and basket design).

I had contemplated on putting the tweets on the A pillar since it'll be an easier install but the front factory location only accomodate a 4inch midrange...I suck at cutting stuff...

i tried to put 5.25" in the back of my 94...didnt fit...the part that protects the back of the cone just wouldnt fit...4" fit perfectly...the computer @ Best Buy said 5.25" was supposed to fit...but they just didnt...it is nice havin them back there because it fills the whole car...and the sound doesnt fade if u wanna drop the tailgate and listen to your stereo...if u have subs in the back...u have to put speaker back there or else all u will hear from the back is bass...

Not hard at all, just takes time and patience and a few bandages for the cuts on the fingers. On-and-off probably spent a month on that though.

OEM amp in 95 4runner?

Does anyone know if there's an OEM amp (powering the rear speakers) inside the 95 4runner?

I've hooked up my Eclipse CD2000 h/u and are having some issues with it.
First, when I'm listening to the radio, i can hear all the full range (mids, lows, highs)..however, when I put in a CD, all I can hear are the highs.
Then if I press the radio button immediately, I can hear full range sound from the speakers (listening to the radio station).

My amp remote wire are not hooked up to anything. My antennae wire is hooked to the car's power antennae wire.

THanks for any advice.
I hope it's not the D/A converter in the HU that's messed up. I put other CDs in and still the same result

There is not any other amp other than the HU in the '95 4Runner.


My amp remote wire are not hooked up to anything. My antennae wire is hooked to the car's power antennae wire.

You need to have the amp remote wire hooked up to the remote turn on lead (could be different than power antennae) so the amp can come on when the HU is on.

If the remote turn on lead is hooked up to power antennae, it could shut off the amp when the CD is played because the HU turns off the power antennae signal to lower the antennae and thus the amp is turned off. Look to see if you have a blue remote turn on wire on your new HU and hook the power amp to that.

I don't have an external amp and still using the HU's internal amp to power the front and rears. My plans are to use the RCA outs for a sub amp. But right now I just want to be able to hear the full range playing CDs using the H/U.

So my HU's antennae wire (blue) is hooked to the vehicle's power antennae wire and my HU's blue/white remote/amp wire is not hooked up to anything right now.

I did get an RMA to return the unit but I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong before returning it and having to wait for another unit.

4" bostons or polks great clarity and direct bolt on. i do recommend soldering the wires over crimping with connectors.
