400+ miles on a single tank?

Best tank was last summer (haven't started the highway stuff yet this year)... 507 with the range showing 35 miles left (and no yellow light).. Filled up with 20.21 gallons (507 / 20.21 = 25.09 MPG)... I never get below 390 miles per tank (even in 4WD all the time in the winter), my commute is roughly 75% highway, 25% city.

Worst tank was 275 miles towing a 22' boat and trailer weighing just over 4500 lbs (filled the 4Runner with 20.1 gallons which equates to 13.69 MPG)

That is amazing! Is your 4runner totally stock? If not what size tires? What PSI do run in your tires? What octane gas do you use?

Wow. 500+ miles is amazing, lucky for you driving all those highway miles!! :)

V6 or V8? Don't you dare say V8.

V6 - 4 spd, totally stock except for the breather mods (and the tranny cooler - forgot about that one)... I still have the dunflops running at 38 PSI. Keeping the speed at between 60 and 70 is the trick, and I didn't use cruise control in the hilly areas (cruise reacts by jamming the gas to bring it back to speed) and most of the hills were 3% grade or less. I only use 87 (Regular) octane fuel, and during that trip, A/C was set to 74 degrees to keep it from kicking on all the time. No, I don't remember the wind conditions or the outside temp (probably in the 80's tho)...

The only other thing I can say is that this economy is obviously not the average, this trip was the only one I got this kind of mileage on, but I did have 2 other people in the car and some cargo.

The best MPG I see on my 4Runner is around 45 mph and between 60 and 70 mph... Over 75 and the mileage gets worse quickly.

I concur... on a recent long trip from CA to Oregon I noticed that as soon as I went over 70mph the computer mpg would start to go down. About 67mph was what I ended up setting cruise at, which meant I was one of the slower cars on the road but at least I saved a few gallons of gas and I was in no hurry.

And through the mountains I turned cruise off because it is useless on any long freeway incline. This meant I sometimes slowed down to 50, but that is better than getting annoyed by the tranny jumping all over the place burning up gas.

With a strong headwind I averaged 20mpg (calculated using gallons/miles). Without the headwind but with an extra passenger and cargo I averaged 22mpg.

Extemely Low MPG

Off-roading at the pismo dunes I got 3.5 mpg, I killed $20 of gas in about hour of dickin' around. Granted most of it was playing around comp hill and the slvr climb to the right of it.

475 miles out of one tank of regular in my 2006 v6 on a recent trip to Nashville and back home to Atlanta. I filled up when I returned home and put in 23.15 gallons... Talk about running on fumes... :D

I recently averaged 22+ mpg on my trip from Florida to North Carolina (560 miles) running 85+ mph at times and averaged 80 mph most all of the time while on I75. I was pretty happy with those numbers. I calculated those #'s myself, but they were very close to the computers readings (comp said 22.9).

Since I put a 2.5 inch lift and 265/70/17 AT tires I haven't gotten over 320 miles to a full tank. Highway or city.......mine only has 1700 miles. Usually about 15 mpg

Can tires about an inch bigger and a lift really decrease mileage that much??

If my tires say the max recomended psi is 35lbs, is it horrible to try more (ie-37 or 38 lbs)?

v6 owners with tires bigger than stock, what is your record for a tank?

I love the truck, but I hope this improves some

Ryan,

I have 265/70s on a 2wd no lift and my mileage only decreased about .5 to 1.0 mpg. I get about 360-370 miles per tank with mixed driving and average about 17-18.5mpg. I still see my trip computer read 19-22.5 mpg on a regular basis. I would guess your loss of MPG is a combined effect of the lift and tires.

Have you gone 100% synthetic where ever you can put it???

Thanks for the response, I have not switched to synthetic yet, but I will once I hit about 5,000 miles. I've read that for a full "break-in" it's good to keep the dino oil in their until then.

Yeah, about my mpg I am a little disapointed. I did a bunch of research and from what I read tires hurt mpg by about 1 mpg and the lift about 1 mpg, so I figured at most I would hurt only 2mpg. I guess it's a little more complicated than that.

Granted my 4runner is pretty much brand new, it could (hopefully) get better. From several accounts mpg improves until about 20K miles.

Miles per galon

Recently did a trip to Baltimore, MD from Raleigh,NC - 280, what surprised me was the avg miles per galon - 23.9 and not just driving 55 either..

2006 4R V6 4WD Limited.

I did the same thing you are doing with 5000 miles on the dino before switching. I have been Mobil One ever since. But any quality synthetic is great. Hell even Wal-Mart has a Super-Tech Full Synthetic for about 3 dollars a quart. They also have a 5 quart jug for even cheaper /QT. I use it in my lawn mowers.

The break in with dino verses synthetic is up for debate. There are various car makers that the factory fill is synthetic. I think it is just personal preference. IMO I don't think there is anything wrong with doing it either way.

I know some here will change thiers at 500miles then again at 1500 miles and again a 3000miles and then to synthetic at 5000 ect...... Or some interval like the above. There may be some benefit to that. I just feel it is over kill. Again it is personal preference.

I have gone the K&N FIPK route and gained no MPG. I didn't lose any either, maybe gained a few HP but NO improved mileage.

Here is a link to changing your Front & Rear Diffs and Transfer case to synthetic. That may help your mileage slightly.

Good luck and happy driving!!!

IIRC, my best tank was in the 320 range -- highway cruising, down-hill, with the wind at my back. My typical tank does 250-270 miles, mostly city driving.

I have mileage logs and receipts for every fill-up.

Well, I don't know if I qualify since I just got mine this past Wednesday. So far, my computer says I'm averaging 20.4 mpg, I have driven 225 miles, and I have a little over half a tank. About 20% highway and the rest city driving. I have been granny-ing it though, since it is brand new.

FYI, the computer over reports your average. Most members say it's about 10%. Mine's showing about the same average your getting, but hand calculated, I'm getting almost 18mpg.

The onboard computer shows the range at 470 miles on a full tank. I normally get 21 mpg around town and 25-27 mpg highway.

This morning the fuel gauge was just above the empty. I've never seen the low fuel light come on; it took 19 gallons.

My last fill-up was 22.5 gallons which gave 445 miles, or just under 20 mpg. Fuel computer said 22.0 mpg. Fuel light came on at exactly 400 miles, or with about 20 gallons consumed.

i used to get 415 mile range on a full tank , now all of a sudden, for the first time it reads 341 miles range on tank full. i have no clue why its doing this.

but after trd cai, amsoil fluids, and ecu reset, the mileage improved about 1-2mpg. and my driving habits is about the same.

25.2 MPG

This weekend, I drove over Rt 84 in NY to Hartford CT, a distance of about 100 miles, and got 25.2 MPG on my 2004 V6 LTD according to my trip computer. (I do use Mobil 1, but I haven't really seen a boost in MPG for that, I don't think.) I was surprised it was that high, especially with all the hills. Not a real scientific or thorough test, for sure. Before that, I hadn't reset my computer for, well, probably close to a half year, so that's probably 5 or 7 thousand miles of all types of driving, mostly leadfooted (just gotta love the pickup in this V6).... and I got 19.6 MPG. That's not great compared to a Prius, but it's pretty darn good for this type of vehicle. I think Consumer Reports is nuts when they downgrade a 4Runner because it supposedly gets poor mileage. I didn't get this vehicle for the mileage, of course, but I sure can't complain.

Remember that the trip computer reads high. You probably didn't get 25.2 if you calculated the mileage.

Did you remember to factor in the fact that you are traveling 2-3% farther than you odometer reads because of the larger diameter tire?

Does this mean that if we run smaller tires, technically our odometer will read +3% lifetime (i.e., instead of 200k miles, 206k miles)

ok. now that I calculate it... no biggie.
