4Lo beeping

4th gen, Warthog.

They all have a center differential that is unlocked by default even in low range.

Thanks for the comments and discussion so far!

As an update, my CDL works fine. I exercise it at least monthly to keep it working.

Currently, 4lo does not work, never has since I purchased the truck in December 2013. I would like to have it working at minimal expense.

My original question was:

I am looking for advice and opinions regarding the practicality of just swapping my transfer case for a good used one with a working shift actuator. I could do the swap for no more than $1,000 maybe less versus a $2,500 repair of the existing actuator.

Given the two choices, I would choose the used case.

But if it were me, I would try engaging it one or more times per day for a period of time before I swapped cases. As far as expense, you can't get much more minimal than that.

Not a requirement, but a very good idea.

However, Gdmeadors, since you have nothing to lose, at some point you should try engaging low range while rolling very slowly (1 - 3 mph).

Any experience out there when switching to 4lo and there is no light or beeping at all? The 4LO light doesn't come. Locking differential works. Can't hear any activity from the transfer case either. This is a 2008 v8-limited AWD. I'm doing the recommended, in N with brake applied, procedure but seems like something further up the chain is misbehaving (like the switch).

Thank you.

Hum... So been reading this thread and didn't see my issue.
On my 06 V6 I get the beeping but it's going into 4low seems to work fine but won't stop beeping. Anybody else have this? Wondering should I just keep trying and mess around with it to see if it will stop? I really don't use the 4low so it hasn't been that important to me to take it in. Just wondering if others have seen this.

You shouldn't get any beeping at any point when going to 4 low. If you do its because it's not working properly. Sounds to me it isn't actually engaging.

So I fell pretty confident it's engaging, last snow storm a month ago I tried it out again the wheels turned went into low gear etc... I am wondering if some part of it may not be fully engaged? Or if maybe the actuator is gummed up and is not sensing the engagement? Guess no real way to tell. Not sure how the previous owner treated it but it's done the beeping for a long time on me I haven used it very often like I should have, but it seems to work fine just annoying beeps. Not my first Toyota or last but I can say with confidence it's engaged but maybe it not locked in to the point of the sensor reading it correctly? That's all I can come up with. I also installed a toggle switch to shut off the traction control/abs all that. But it made no difference on the beeping, I only shut it all off in extream more situations.
I think I will just have to live with it for now but was hoping someone had gone through a similar situation.

Did you ever figure this out?

I have the same issue anyone with any guidance?

Hi rock4200,

TLDR: Check the 4WD switch and wiring harnesses

Sorry for the late reply but once I came to terms with a feature I never used I left it as is. It had been bugging me so I got back to it this weekend. It is working! Simple solution was to remove the center console and check the connections. The switch was disconnected... That's a mystery unto itself. After connecting it the dash lit up as expected. It wouldn't enter 4LO immediately though (4LO light blinks). I followed some of the other suggestions here: cycle it between 4HI and 4LO, roll it forward then back... Didn't get to tapping it. I let sit it for a few hours. Then before heading out for errands tried again after going ~30' in reverse and then it popped in. This had sat in 4HI for 7+ years. I cycled through the combination (4HI/LO & center-diff lock on/off) and looks good to go.

Another thread on here talked about the same issue and it was the switch left disconnected (Sirius radio removal/install). I brought it in to Toyota for a diag/debug but they just said new transfer-case and actuator for a $2,500-8,000 repair bill. I specifically asked about the switch and they said it was working and couldn't explain the lack of dash lights w/o more money. Bad service rep in hind sight...

Best of luck and thanks everyone for the posts,
Richard

Surprise!

I recently needed to have the very expensive exhaust manifold(s) replaced on my 2004 V8. The next time I needed 4LO that annoying, incessant beeping STOPPED! As you can imagine, I was shocked. I happened to mention this goofy but welcome event to a friend who was a jet airplane inspector. He didn't hesitate to reply that there must have been a vacuum problem that was repaired by the new exhaust manifold(s). YAY ME!

Just wanting to bump this thread because I’m having an issue with the 4lo beeping.

While cleaning my 04 Limited yesterday I accidentally left the key on ACC and drained the battery. After charging the battery and cranking it up I noticed the 4lo light was blinking on the dash.

I turned the vehicle off after several minutes and removed the key. When I turned the car back on the 4lo light still blinks but now it is also beeping.

When I actually put it in 4lo (when in neutral) the beeping stops and the light goes solid. 4lo seems to be working fine. When I put it back into 4hi the beeping and flashing starts again.

I have tried cycling through 4hi and 4lo several times and even drove around the block.

I reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and checked the 4wd fuse in the dash.

I unplugged the 4wd ecu under the glove box also.

This just happened after jumping off the battery so it appears to only be an electrical issue.

Any advice??

Just a quick update...hooked it up and got the C1336 code. Guess I’ll try a zero point calibration and see what that does. Still not sure it will fix my 4lo beeping problem though.

Another update. I done the ZPC and got rid of the VSC lights but the 4lo is still blinking and beeping in AWD. Is there a sensor related to the 4wd system in 4th gen 4runners? I haven’t been able to find one other than the ones I’ve seen in 3rd gens.

Any help would be much appreciated!
