The current generation 4Runner has been named #4 of all vehicles for prevention of death in accidents. A study out this year by the the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 'Runner as the top safety rated of ANY SUV!!

Seems like there's more at play than just the vehicle... like the type of owner and how they drive. The infiniti G35 is safer than the 4runner? And the Chevvy Astrovan is safest of all? Seems to have nothing to do with engineering.

Then you look at the cars with highest fatalities and, surprise surprise, they are all cheap sports cars beloved of young racer types who are prone to get into more accidents.

Guess it means a bunch of old farts generally drive 4Runners!

I was a little surprised that the Camry was on the unsafe list. But yeah, I think it also has plenty to do with individual driving skills and carefulness (or lack thereof).

come on man this propoganda is false. its all about WHO THE OWNER OF THE CAR IS. the 4runner is rather an expensive SUV and most people who buy them are probably white collar middle aged married men and not high school single males.

This just in - rolls royce and bentley are tied for the safest vehicles in the world while the dodge srt and camaros/mustangs are the most dangerous to own. lolcopter

It's really not propaganda (information that is spread for the purpose of promoting some cause), it is statistics. Now you can say that various things went into causing these statistics, as others are noting, and I'm sure that's true. However, they be what they be.

Higher fatality accident rates with Camrys? May be on account of all the "blue hairs" that drive them around here! :awais:

And I have to give it to the 4Runner for all the sophisticated traction/stability/braking controls, towards helping with accident avoidance!

That is true, statistics don't really lie, they are just numbers...The funny thing about elderly drivers is that they are responsible for causing more accidents than they are actually involved in...

"There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." Forget who said that, but this is a classic case. Statistics never lie, since they are facts, but how they are presented (usually very selectively) can lead to many half truths and misleading conclusions.

Throw all accident statistics into the mix (covering cars, miles driven, location, type of accident, owner driving record, owner age, condition of car, etc. etc.) and the real picture will probably start to emerge. Except that would be a huge report.

Yes the demographics of typical owners and their driving habits are not factored in for each make in a report, making the results skewed somewhat. So it might not be the vehicle itself that's the safest, but rather the majority of the owners and their driving habits vs. other brands. Either way, my 4Runner is large enough I feel safer knowing there is alot more room between myself and the point of impact........


But like said before, who cares, it keeps the insurance premiums down some!!
