So says TrueCar, a company that analyzes sales trends. I would not have guessed that the 4Runner was Toyota's worst selling vehicle of '09.

"...
Toyota’s worst performing car in 2009 was the 4Runner. Sales of this model have declined 66 percent compared to last year."
I can't argue the facts that sales decreased---they did.
However, you can't sell what you don't have. For example, the largest dealer around here choose not to inventory 4Runners last year. Typically throughout the run of the 4th Gens they would have anywhere from 10-20 or even more 4Runners on the lot at any time. Same for trucks. Due to the economic downturn, they didn't even have 20 total Tundras, Tacos, 4Runners, FJ's or LC's combined at any one time. They were only pushing econo vehicles and if you wanted something else, they would try and find you something. This is a very large dealer, and just for reference as to their volume they sold 372 vehicles during the "cash for clunkers"
Now, with the 5th Gen out, and the economy back from the brink (or not), they're back into selling trucks again. I just checked their inventory and they have 7 4Runners (my neighbor just bought one, so they're down from 8), about 30 Tacos, and about 25 Tundras. The other day when I test drove the 2010 4Runner, there were three other people doing the same. Tons of people looking at trucks too in part because they now have a huge selection.
If it wasn't "green" in 2009, it didn't sell. The economy flipped everything upside down. But, like I said at the top, you can't sell what you don't have.
