4Runner Driver Seat

IS anyone finding out that the front seat specially the driver seat doesn't hold up very well. The foam gets torn right along the side where it flairs out. Never had a car with such weak seats.

I'm gonna have to get some pics of this but I sewed mine back together with little zip-ties. It was torn from front to back on the top outside, basically missing the entire skinny strip. So I basically took the two closest tubes and pulled them together. Looks better than a huge hole and won't get any worse. Just gonna have to deal with the voodoo doll looking seat till I get my Wet Okoles:hungry:
 
Mine's not torn, but I find that it slowly "lowers" itself over time. It needs slightly stiffer seat cushions and a
knob that will hold its position.
 
But we are talking about trucks that are at least 10 years old, with over 100K miles. I'm guessing a 10-year-old Mustang is going to have some seat wear too (and probably worse).

This, my 4runner seats have always held up great in the 4runner, but even so, 200k miles and 15 years will take its toll.
 
i looked at getting new seats from a taco or a newer 4runner, and honestly i think it would be cheaper just to go with some aftermarket seats from corbeau like these:

If you can just scan for one in a junkyard. Finding one without water damage is the hardest part. I just replaced my drivers seat, only issue was after removing it, one of the tack welded nuts fell lose from some rust damage... had to drill through the floor boards to get it bolted back down. Nothing that a large washer and some JB weld couldnt handle.

yeah water damage is what i have mostly seen, or ones in the same condition as my current seats, id rather spend 300 per seat on news ones than 150 per seat on ones sitting out in the texas sun for years

Pretty common. On my SR5 with leather seats, it's the sharp edge of the frame behind the plastic cover on the outside that causes the damage.

I swapped seat bottoms with the passengers side and put several layers of gorilla tape over the metal edge to prevent the same thing happening... that was about 2 years ago, so far so good.

You forgot to add the extra $200 for those for the brackets needed for the 4Runner. You would be at $800 for the pair of seats in cloth.


I just replaced the seat back foam on my drivers side. Foam was $120 from Toyota, and took about an hour total and that was with my g/f removing and re-installing the seat from the truck. Fabric on mine is still in good shape with no rips or tears or anything, so I figured that was the cheapest option for me. I'll eventually need to order the bottom pad, but that can wait until my next big order from Toyota.

Yeah 800 seems like a lot, but that is a sweet set of seats, and I'm sure they are ultra comfy compared to the stock seats. I'd like to find a set to sit in before I would pull the trigger on them though.

Mine isnt bad but is starting to get some wear on the edge of the leather. A few people have just switched the cushions to the other side. Works for me as it puts the worn fabric up against the center console. And the driver seats gets a less worn cushion.

I plan on flipping the seat bottoms(driver to passenger and vice-versa)

Anyone happen to have a good link to a write up of that to save me some searching?
 
I got a new bottom cushion for the driver's seat for Christmas. Granted, that means I didn't pay for it, but it was worth every penny someone else spent!

I didn't take enough pictures to do a good write up, but here are the basics:

-Remove the seat - be careful pulling off the covers where the seat meets the floor or you'll snap the plastic tabs holding them on

-Remove the plastic panels from the side of the seat - phillips screws and if you have manual seats there's a clip holding the knob for the seat bottom tilt adjustment on. Kind of a pain to get off.

-Behind those panels you'll see 2 12mm bolts per side near the front and back of the lower seat cushion. Remove these and you should be able to pull the lower cushion & frame out.

-Flip it over and you'll see a bunch of copper (?) rings crimped together to hold the "frame" of the cushion to the metal frame of the seat/spring bed.

-Locate and open all the rings - I used a pair of needle nose pliers and a flat screw driver. Not an exact science, but not hard either.

-At this point installation is the opposite of removal. I suggest taking a hammer/vice etc. to the rings and getting them flat before trying to re-crimp them. It will make them close up easier and cleaner.

the seatback part on mine is torn, also the outside edge is really torn up little bits of foam come off eat time I get in and out, need to get a set of good covers or have it repaired but it seems might be beyond repair. of course this is a 98 with 280k miles on it..
 
All of my seats were torn when i got my 4runner except the bottom part of the driver's side rear. Both buckets completely torn out on the door side and the back seats tore apart at the seams. I'm not sure why, the truck only had 137K on it, and my Dad's 3rd gen pickup with the same material looks nearly new approaching 200k.

Could have been a rather large person driving the vehicle before you. They may have been leaning on the seat to get into the drivers seat, and it eventually tore. Then they may have switched the pads over, then it tore again after another 50-60k miles.
 
There are quite a few threads on seat repair already, just FYI.

You can replace the leather for about $120+ per seat.

I don't know the foam part #s but they are out there.

Yeah, after I posted this I hunted some threads down.

I haven't found any about replacing the leather for $120 (you talking covers?) but I'll keep digging.
