That might be one we will do, but i'm going to get the permits to do the Zion Narrows and the hike to the Subway. We will be camping just in zion for a week and spend the other week driving around arches and canyonlands doing little hikes there so we will see plenty of zion!

Thanks daka320! In Page we will probably just do horseshoe bend (have to get my wide shot of that!) Antelope Canyon can only be done with a guided tour approved by the Navajo Nation and it's pretty pricey, which is a bummer because its very beautiful. Canyon de Chelly looks like Mesa Verde. I'm still trying to figure out if Mesa Verde is something that can be photographed/seen from the road or if you have to hike. Is Canyon de Chelly seen from the road easily to take photos? I might squeeze that in just because of you! Looks very awesome!

It shouldn't make a difference, platnium, iridium, unubtanium; whatever they are made of they'll get cooked, caked, and soaked like any other plug.

Since plugs are being discussed, the 2004 v6 engines is the year toyota switched from 30,000 mile plugs to 90,000 mile plugs according to my mechanic. Some 04's have the 30 and others the 90,000 mile plugs. I had the 30 plugs on mine and replaced them with the same 30,000 mile plugs at 90,000. The costs are about the same.
Canyon de Chelly does have some nice photo places. I do not remember how close to the road some are. I do know that you can hike down into it near some indian ruins. Also, there is Spider Rock. I felt at peace there!
If you drive back thru Arizona near Flagstaff, Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon is a must see. Bring your swimming suits and visit Slide Rock State Park north of Sedona. We are heading up there next week with the kids and camping at Mingus Mountain. There is also Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, the Painted Desert, and the Petrified Forest as you drive east on hwy 40.
Bring plenty of sunblock, mosquito spray, hiking hats, and lots of water! Believe it or not you should bring along some clothes for temps in the 40s. Yes it does get cool at night in the high desert of Arizona.
One more thing! This time of year is monsoon season in Arizona. I'm sure you have seen pics of the haboob in Phoenix. Watch for flash flooding in dried-up stream beds and low areas. Especially if you are offroading! In a matter of 10-15 mins a stream can go from dried up to a few feet of water or more! It does surprise you!

I'll just check the plugs and see if they need to be replaced or not. We will be passing through canyon de chelly on the way from Albuquerque, NM to Page, AZ during sunrise so that will be nice for photography. Canyon de chelly is free to enter and most of the stuff can be photographed/seen from the road so i'm definitely doing it! Unfortunately Flagstaff is not on the way since we will be headed for Page, AZ then Zion park for a week, but i know what you were talking about there. There's just too much stuff to see in this part of the country and i wish i could fit it all in!

Okay, thank you 4Runners for trusting me with your VIN. I ran it through our network and came back with records going to 3/30/08.
Back in '09 you had a 120k Major service done at about the same mileage.
This service includes:
-Replace engine oil
-Replace engine oil filter
-Rotate tires
-Inspect front & rear brakes
-Replace air filter
-Adjust the parking brake
-Install fuel & engine oil conditioner
-Replace PCV valve
-Replace engine coolant
-Replace Spark plugs (plat/irid extra)
-Drain & refill transmission
-Check shock absorber operation
-Install battery pads
-Replace differential fluid (4x4)
-Drain and refill transfer case (4x4)
-Lube door hinges
-Set CARB/EFI idle mixture
-Inspect brake lines & cable
-Inspect drive axle & shift boots
-Test exterior lights
-Set tire pressure
-Inspect drive belts
-Inspect fuel lines & hoses
-Inspect cooling & heating system
-Roadtest
Now knowing that, I would reccomend that you still get a Valve adjustment done as all 1GR-FE engines up until 2010 are bucket and shim engines and should be adjusted every 60k. In 2010 we introduced the Dual VVTi 1GR-FE which adopted Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjusters.
Your transmission fluid, differential, transfer case, and coolant are most likely fine as its only been 30k. Your serpentine belt may need to be changed. When you had your most recent service done in April you had a rotation and brake inspection done, you should have a multi-point inspection sheet that tells you how much is left on your tires and brakes.

Oh wow! Thanks for looking that up for me. So the 120000 MILE DEALER PLUS SERVICE that i had done on 10/28/2009 included all that? I think i remember now. I also remember that i replaced the original battery because it died that very day and AAA had to jump start me so i could get to the dealership, but the dealership installed a new toyota battery. When i get back home i'll try to see if i kept that multi-point inspection sheet from my April service and get back to you. Thanks again!

Record shows that the dealer also replaced the battery that day as well.
The service record I emailed you should have the Repair Order (RO) number, if you want you can have the dealership pull that RO up to see exactly what was done.
That is what we do for a 120k Major Service at our Toyota Dealership, I would assume it is not much different from dealer to dealer. If you have any doubts you can always ask the dealer to pull the record to show you what they did.

Yep i received all the info. All the dealerships do the same service i believe. I'm at 149,900 miles now so i'll take it in not next week but probably the week after for it's oil change and now i have a good idea of what else should be done!

With 157k miles just drove round trip from Mckinney TX (about 25 mins North of Dallas) to Washington D.C. for my bro-in-law to retire from the A.F. (Approx 3k mile round trip).
I unfortunately had a severe blow-out several days BEFORE the trip, so I got 5 new tires of course. Glad the blow-out happened before, not during. I knew I needed tires but didn't think they were THAT bad
I did have a headlight go out while away, but I took one of the bulbs from my driving lights out, and swapped it in. Prior to leaving, I did a driveway tranny fluid flush, coolant flush, changed the radiator hoses, changed the oil, and changed the engine air filter, & Pass compartment air filter.
Other than that, great drive!
On a side note... I went back to factory size tires - 265/65-17s from 265/70-17s and am glad I did. Even though the Goodyears I had on there lasted a while, my speedo was off because of the tire size difference, and was very annoying. Going back to factory size is nice because I don't always have to have my GPS speed up, or have to do the calculations in my head how fast I'm going when I see a cop.

Road Trip
I took my 96 4Runner with 300,000 miles on it from Houston to Santa Fe, NM without a worry. I just got a new one because of their reliability. I would have the oil changed, etc to get ready for any trip that far, but the 4Runner should do fine. This is the third one I've owned and the last two went over 200K without any significant issues.

Ok guys, so i'm at the dealership right now waiting for the runner to be serviced. They told me an hour and a half wait for oil change and rotation! Anyways, i told them to give it an oil change and tire rotation and re-check the hoses, fluids, belts, brakes...etc and they know about my 120,000 miles service because i got it done here! Hopefully there's nothing wrong and we will be good to go. I'll keep you all posted!
EDIT: I hope they dont scratch the plasti-dipped wheels. I told them to be careful! Also i had about 150,300 miles when i took it in.

More advice please
I know good advice isn't free theses days, so thanks in advance for your feedback. I am at 165k on my '03 SE V8 4x4.
I replaced my timing belt at 86k. I now have 165k. What is your recommendation wait or do it now?
Would you also put in water pump #3? I also received the advice to replace the thermostat and radiator hoses with the timing belt and water pump replacement. Thoughts?
Do the V8's require the valve adjustment service?
Is a fuel pump at this mileage on this model necessary preventative maintenance? Thanks!

I'm taking a road trip from NYC to San Diego as I am moving there. I have a 3 week trip planned out. I will post the "google maps" link below so you guys can check it out. All thoughts as to the "feasibility" of the trip or if you think I'm being over-zealous are greatly appreciated.
I just bought my first 4runner with 147,000. It seems to be in great shape, some rust underneath, but from everything I've been researching on the web, especially this forum, the 4runner is the most reliable vehicle. I am building a bed platform for storage and putting a pillow top over it.
But any thoughts regarding this trip as far as my stops, safety, and other 4runner concerns are greatly appreciated!
