4runner is probably totaled - dashcam video included

Last week a 16 year old in a Jeep accelerated out of a right turn and lost control (road was wet). She put her front bumper right into my front driver's side wheel. I was stopped at a red light and couldn't avoid her. I'm waiting on a call from her adjuster after he looks at it, but its almost certainly a total loss.

It was in really good shape. 99 Limited 4x4, 209,000 mi, no rust, good tires, usual small mods for a 3rd gen (transmission cooler, deckplate, rear diff breather).
The body is still almost perfect except for that front corner and bumper and a dent in the rear corner where she came to rest against me. Everything mechanical around that front wheel is probably trashed, but it'll be a good one for a junk yard unless someone here can convince me it'll be worth parting it out myself if I can buy it back from insurance.

A very good thing you have that dashcam video, definitely clears up any possible discrepancy.

Sorry this happened to you, I certainly hope it doesn't end up totaled. If they do try and total it out, you can absolutely fight that and get it covered.

Glad you and the other driver are ok. So what kind of dash cam are you using?

I think it should fix - don't forget to list out All the upgrades you did to it to raise its value before they wack away with the repair cost. In texas you can buy your totaled vehicles back for 15% of value.

Video makes it look like she though she was in her Porsche 911 instead of a Heap. Though based on her over correction she probably would've wrecked the 911 also! Glad all are ok. :^)

To add insult to injury, my rental car is a Jeep compass 4 cylinder. That thing is pitiful.

The dashcam is a couple year old G1W.

That's definitely getting totaled. Between the suspension and body work the insurance company won't want to fix that. On a side note, what an idiot driver. It's like they didn't even let off the gas once they started to skid.

Someone educate me. If you own your vehicle. Meaning you have the title and no payments. And if someone crashes into you. You cannot just keep your vehicle ? You have to buy it ? I don't understand that ? Am I missing here something ?

When the insurance company total's your vehicle, they pay you what they think is the value of the vehicle. It becomes their vehicle at that point. They obviously have no use for it and sell it to a junk yard for almost nothing. You can often ask the insurance company to buy the vehicle back from them since they will get more than the junk yard will give them.

The price they sell it back to you depends. Usually anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to a couple grand depending on the value of the totaled vehicle.

I just went through this with mine.. I ended up buying mine back for $375 and mine has way more mods. So don't take first offer.

Sucks man, I bought my Corolla back for $200 & sold it to my old mechanic for $500. He wanted to fix it up for his daughter when she graduated HS.
But get the 4runner back & fix it.

Unfortunate about the accident and I hope everything works out. I can't tell from the pics if the frame is actually bent or not. Depending on the buy back price, it should be worth fixing it up. Without knowing the miles on it, it looks like a very clean 4runner.

It is fixable...just depends on if you want to take the time. I bet you can buy it back for a couple-three hundred bucks then put about about 500-1000 dollars back in repairing it.

You could make some cheese on the deal....then again it maybe easier just cashing out and buying another one with the check. My wife hit a pole in hers in a parking lot, insurance totalled it out, gave us 4300 I bought it back for 300 bucks and fixed it. Still has a clean title (10 year old law in Tn) and she's daily driving it. Just keep an eye out for a good donor at a pull it yard.
