Before we split my company was one of the world's largest producers of seat belt webbing and air bag curtains so the numbers are more than I can count.
Both seat belts and air bags are fantastic safety tools but in a few certain instances both have caused more harm than good.
Bottom line is that the button is there for a reason. Use it.

Not exactly related, but in the most recent episode of Top Gear (Africa Special Part 2), Jeremy Clarkson's BMW had side airbags deploy on two separate occasions while traveling down a particularly rough dirt road. It didn't look like it was a pleasant experience.
