Can you turn off the nannies?

Alright so we are getting into a place where a T4R will again be in the driveway. Thanks in advance to those that know.

Torn between 2019 an earlier (with a key!) and the 2020 & up with all the (to me) annoying nannies.

I am old school and actually pay attention when I drive, and have found all the electrical lane departure this and automatic that to not be what I prefer. But in all fairness I rode with a coworker awhile back in a '21 and it was nice.

Which leads to the title question of turning all those features off on the newer models. I know you can change the cruise from distance keeping to maintaining speed. But what about the rest?

(Caveat: I should probably download the '22 owner's manual...)

I had a 19 Camry with all Toyota Safety Sense stuff and yes you could turn off the Lane Keep, radar cruise, and blind spot monitoring!

you can turn it all off. 4R's dont have blind monitoring so you dont have to worry about that.

If I remember correctly yes you could in the vehicle settings. You could turn the intensity to high, low, or off.

Ah nice, just hate when people change lanes right in front of you to turn, causing your vehicle to practically lock up the wheels. Very annoying.

you can turn it all off. 4R's dont have blind monitoring so you dont have to worry about that.

They now have blind spot monitoring.

I think I can turn everything off on my 2022 TRD ORP except the rear collision avoidance. Which for me drives me nuts, since I live on a busy street and the thing goes nuts when backing out of the driveway. The stuff I can turn off are front collision avoidance (regular and cruise control), lane departure, blind spot. I actually found the cruise control collision avoidance programming pretty good on a long road trip last weekend.

Hi Mike. I’m pretty old school too. My wife’s car has all the nanny bs, and it it is very annoying. If she drives head first down the driveway the car will beep and stop itself at the bottom of the driveway, mistaking the pavement for an obstruction. That’s just one of a list of features that make driving her car no fun. The 4Runner has most of the same features but they can be turned off, dialed down, or silenced, making them only occasionally intrusive.

when using the cruise control you can just press for 3 seconds instead of a quick press and the cruise control won't use the radar, it's nice to be able to choose, on long highway drives with little traffic, I find the radar is pretty nice and when going though road construction, keeps me a good distance from the car in front of me... but 90% of the time I just use regular old school cruise control.

Lane assistance is just a button on the wheel, and remembers the position it was last in, so that's easy.

The updated head units in the new ones works really well for me, that might be another consideration.

With gas prices high, I’ve been commuting in the wife’s CRV.

Boring car but I’ve been using g the bell out of adaptive cruise control.

Really nice feature but not enough for me to trade my 2015.

You can turn off Lane Keep Assist and it stays off with persistence, across restarts.

We have driven a '99 SR5 for 17 years, so was Old School too, and was originally shopping for a '19, but they weren't much cheaper than new, so looked into Toyota Safety Sense to see if I could live with it. We now have a '22 ORP and haven't found the Nannies intrusive at all. I turned the Lane Departure warning off and it stays off. I have had the Front Collision Warning light come on a couple times when the vehicle thought I was going to rear end a car at a stop sign, but no biggie. I believe you can adjust the distance. I have a stiff neck, and with the 4Runner's fat C pillars and dark Privacy Glass tint, I have found I really like the Rear Cross Traffic Warning (again, adjustable). Radar Cruise is great on flat Interstates, on hills, it sucks big time.

The larger Infotainment screen on the 2020+ models seems like it should be the bare minimum manufacturers put in a car to be useful. I can't imagine the previous screen size being very usable in comparison.

You can do it with the Carista app and the Carista or other compatible OBD dongle.

You used to be able to do it on earlier generation 4Runners with no special tools, but I believe the 5th Gen requires you to tap into the 4Runner's Brain. You'll can ask the dealer to do that for you, or if they charge you (mine wanted $100 to do any Dealer programming) pick up an Obd2 dongle like Carista. It will allow you to turn off the seatbelt dings, as well as a whole number customizations like make the turn signal click louder or a different sound, open all windows with a long remote button push, etc. It's $30 for the adapter and the smartphone app, and includes one free month of the app use.
