Early Sunday morning northern CA got hammered by over 10,000 dry lightning strikes (no rain) that started over 500 fires. It’s been dry with record heat for a week prior and now the SF Bay Area is hit pretty hard with wild land fires and smoke. Mountain and coastal roads are closed for fire fighting and evacuations. Air quality is hazardous to health. I’m in a dark purple area on the air quality map.

Hunkered down at home, no photo game for me today. Or for a few days. Another dry lightning storm is predicted Sunday-Monday. fuuuuuk.

I've worked out in CA a lot and I know how bad that smoke can be. But man, you guys are getting hammered the past couple of years.

We've been having fires in Colorado too, but not nearly as bad as California. Heard it's close to 1 million acres burned there so far! I sure hope you get some relief soon, though it doesn't sound too likely.

We've got 5 major fires going now, and a large section of I-70 through the mountains has been closed for the last several days.

Here's a picture I took a few days ago from the 13,855 foot summit of Dyer Mountain (near Leadville). ainkiller: Below that is a picture I took in November 2012 looking the same direction from that same spot. The views were much better in 2012!

Nice pics, but very disturbing. It’s amazing how much our climate is changing. There’s just so much more energy in the oceans and atmosphere. And the gulf coast may be getting hit with two simultaneous hurricane systems this week. I don’t know where to go to get relief. Last year at this time I was in Alaska and all over the Anchorage area and Kenai Peninsula there were massive fires and smoke. At least I caught lots of fish.

Yeah, and I just heard on the news this morning that this summer has been the hottest (and one of the driest) summers on record in Colorado. Same for California (one day had 130 degrees in Death Valley!)

The day we climbed Dyer Mountain was one of the smokiest this year, but it did clear out somewhat during the day. One benefit was that we had the mountain to ourselves, even though it's a fairly popular area. Here's a shot on our ascent looking towards a neighboring mountain. And one on our return to the trailhead with the 4Runner (and my wife), which shows how it got much better later in the day. You can see the lower part of that same neighboring mountain in the background of the second picture.

It's been a few days since MeefZah's non-traditional sign challenge, so I am using my 'almost' sign picture as a local landmark reset. This is what's left of the possibly world famous Eddie's Auto Parts in Knoxville, TN. It was a local landmark for decades, a competitor when I was selling auto parts in college, and Eddie was the target of the real Leroy Mercer (aka John Bean and not those stupid St. Louis imposters) "Whoopass" phone call Eddie's Auto - YouTube.

This is not a challenge entry... more of an off-topic diversion. I wanted to post here because it is more relevant to you guys than the general population. I bought a farm last Friday and, as I have been exploring it, found it is quite fun "overloading" :biggrin1: on my own property. This is the middle third which is mostly pasture and some trees. The rear third is hardwood forest, which starts about where I parked the 4Runner. The front third is main house, guest/rental house, and a few acres of old nursery beds and infrastructure.

Chickens, pigmy goats, a couple of burros... planned so far.

I'm also contemplating growing hops.

But for now, I am just happy with the space and the peace and quiet. We will be completely moved in by Friday but I have been using that as my home office while things are being cleaned and stuff is being delivered.

It’s a small farm... only 17 acres. It seems huge to us and it’s way cheaper than rent we were paying to live downtown. Especially with the rental income from the guy in the small house. It’s also surrounded by other farms as the whole are is zoned agriculture and residential. I’m looking into new farmer grants and stuff to get started and possibly putting a conservation easement on the 8 acres of old hardwoods. From what I’ve been told I have the second oldest documented oak tree in Tennessee.

As for the job, I’m a part-time management/operations consultant for the University of Tennessee. Basically, I help businesses fix their problems and make more money.

It’s about 440 years old at last estimate. I love it out there though we haven’t fully moved in yet. Today, I found a pawpaw patch. [emoji41]
