Congrats on the new 4Runner. Looks great!

Here's ours this morning at a pullout along the base of Eagle Cliff Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. We really didn't hang out for long with the 4Runner though; rather we hiked from there to the summit of Eagle Cliff Mountain, where we got some nice views of the higher peaks.

By the way, I came to my senses and decided to keep the 4Runner rather than trading it in on a new Wrangler. Instead, I'm looking into getting a late-model, low-mileage JK to use on those narrow 4x4 roads (to replace my ancient ZJ Grand Cherokee that I've been holding onto for that purpose). Going today to look at a 2017 Willys Unlimited with 36,000 miles, which I can get for about half of the price of a new Rubicon.

I've rented a couple of JK's before on trips to Hawaii and liked them.

I had a 12 JKUR and loved it. The only reason I let it go was my consulting business had a couple of lean years. If I had kept it through that time I would probably still have it and saved lots of money. That's why I thought I would absolutely love the JLUR. It just didn't happen this time around.

A couple of things to consider. The JK Unlimited is not really smaller than the 4Runner. It's only 2" narrower and the same height. The JK 4dr also has the same turning radius but with a longer wheelbase than the 4R. Unless you just have an itch for a Jeep, I would think you would be better served with the necessary upgrades for the 4R. Yeah, stock Jeeps may be slightly better in extreme off-road conditions but most of them get that way with lots of upgrades, basically replacing all those "off-road" goodies they are advertised with.

I've been over Trail Ridge Rd twice on a motorcycle (never in a vehicle). Last time is was rainy, foggy, and 34 degrees. Couldn't see shit. This was the best picture I got that day! (full report: June 2018 Colorado trip - MeefZah )

Previous time was way nicer. At that time I lived in Ohio at the very start of US Hwy 36, and I thought it would be cool to ride 36 all the way across the country until it ended at 34 (TRR) in the RMNP. Kind of a "see where this road goes" kind of adventure but on a continental scale. I enjoyed the "end" of 36 at TRR quite a bit! (full report: September 2014 US 36 / Colorado trip - MeefZah )

73.8" wide vs. 75.8" for the 4Runner. But, the body of the Wrangler is quite a bit narrower as the wheels (and plastic fenders) stick way out on the sides. The wide body of the 4Runner is what gives me the most problems on the narrow shelf roads out here, particularly since I don't like to get it pinstriped in narrow stretches or when I pull over to let opposing vehicles pass. And, I prefer the SFA of the Jeeps for off-road too; cause if you keep track of where the front differential is, you can clear much larger objects than with the IFS on the 4Runner. I want to keep our 4Runner mostly stock as we use it a lot on long trips (on which a Wrangler would be tedious). My only modifications to date have been to replace the stock tires with BFC K02's (Blizzaks in the winter).

And I really have an itch for the Jeep, and am trying to rationalize it.

Bought one yesterday. A 2018 JK. I'll try to work it into the next photo challenge. Maybe along with the 4Runner.

Yes, thanks for asking. I live in East TN so we were spared. The nearest damage was an EF-0 tornado about 30 miles northwest from here. Unfortunately they got clobbered from west of Nashville all the way to Cookeville.

Haha, I was going to go get a pic at my "local" park, the Redwoods State and National Park. There's actually a sign in a shaded spot right along a bluff dropping down to the ocean and for like 7 minutes a day the sign is lit by the sun just right to make a really sweet pic with the ocean in the background. I was gonna go tomorrow!

Been a little slow here lately, and I haven't been near a river. So I thought I'd post a picture of the new (to me) Wrangler (a 2018 JK with 30,000 miles).

First thing I did was order a pair of Rubicon rock rails to replace the side steps. It already had the K02 tires on it. Same size as the 4Runner. They were part of an option package it has.

We're taking the 4Runner to Kansas tomorrow for a few days, so maybe I'll get a river shot somewhere along the way. Probably won't be too scenic, though.

I was hoping not to have to resort to the “local landmark reset” but I guess everyone’s afraid of catching something. Here’s my 4Runner next to a local landmark. The Rice Grist Mill at Norris Dam. It’s been a favorite place of mine since I was a kid. Great trout fishing and brewery nearby. The latter is why I was there today.

Next challenge: Your 4Runner next to a smoke stack. Older and/or interesting is better but beggars can’t be choosers.
