4Runner Trail Trim

Howdy folks! I am a long time looker and I believe this will be my first post.

I have owned a 4runner and Tacoma in the past and loved both of them. I am about to purchase either a 2010-2013 4Runner Trail Edition or a Tacoma T/X Baja Edition. I was looking at a few others like the new Cherokee Trailhawk and Xterra Pro-4x. But, I always keep coming back to Toyota for capability and reliability. Right now I am driving a Subaru Crosstrek....not quite feeling it though!

Is anyone doing anything to prevent or repair the easily scratched exterior plastic on the truck....Rhino lining, powder coating, Plastidip, etc?

Hey Rick- welcome to T4R.

Plastidip will probably be less durable than the factory plastic, and you can't powder coat plastic :caked: HA!

Rustoleum spray-on bed liner is also a cheap but durable option. I find it holds up extremely well and has a nice texture that's easy to touch up.

My uncle has a Tacoma T|X Baja. As far as an OEM suspension, I'm a huge fan. It rides miles nicer that my brother's TRD Off Road Tacoma. After driving my uncle's Baja all week, my dad is planning on trading his TRD Offroad Tacoma for one. He wants to swap from a 6MT access cab to a 5AT double cab, so that is the main driver of the trade, but he's all about that Baja package.

I'd love to see a similar factory setup on the 4Runner. With the FJ's impending death, maybe we'll start getting the special edition attention.

Thanks for answer! I normally would say thank you for providing me a link to SOcalTRAIL's link (found his build thread)....but it may have just cost me A LOT of money! :doh: Haha

The good part is he is local here in San Diego so I may be able to check it out in person or get some advice.

Thanks as well for the response! I really like the Baja edition but man are they hard to find. I have spent the last week casually looking on Autotrader, Ebay, Carmax and Motortrend. I have found one and it was in Kentucky or Tennessee.

My understanding is that the Baja versions get built in a month or so run. I doubt they've been built for the '14 model year yet.

I read recently that they are no longer making the Baja Edition.

EDIT: I read that on one site. It seems as though they are still making it. However, I can't seem to figure out which package is the correct one on Toyota.com. It doesn't specify!!

I went ahead and scratched mine up that way everything lines up with the pin striping in the paint.

I can't comment on the 5th gen stuff, however I think the Baja edition is overpriced. If you do the modifications yourself then you can do a lot more for the price difference you would pay to get a Baja.

It's similar to how a Ford Raptor is good offroad, but if you took a normal F-150 and modified it yourself you could make it a magnitude better offroad and come out cheaper still than a Raptor.

I think that one site was incorrect. The official press release from toyota on the '14 Tacoma mentions that the T|X Baja returns. Like you, though, I haven't seen it listed on Toyota's website. My guess is that it will pop up when the trucks are available on the showroom floor.

Depends on the buyer. If you want a great suspension that is covered 100% by the factory warranty and like the TRD wheels and exhaust, the Baja is the way to go. I've modded vehicles in the past and it just isn't worth the hassle to me anymore. I'd rather pay the extra $1000 for any issues that might arise to become Toyota's problem rather than my own. Plus, you have that whole returning to stock thing if/when you go to sell it and stashing the stock parts somewhere. Personally, I refuse to buy a modded vehicle when I'm on the used market because who knows what hack did the work and how they countermeasured problems that arose during the installation. Different strokes for different folks.
