4runner TRD Pro

How do you know suspension is perfect if you have yet to ride in one? I'm really not seeing or understanding how a softer suspension without KDSS is a good thing for a vehicle the already rolls and nosedives like it does.

Not sure if this got lost in the shuffle but...

I have driven w/ KDSS and now this, so I can be fair I think.... KDSS is really tight and controlled in corners, TRD is very similar, but just a tad more roll I'd say

So it seems that it's pretty similar to the KDSS ride. As far as nosedives, I haven't seen any mention of that as of yet.

When I said perfect, I was talking about looks. There's no debating the Pro has a better suspension than standard stock Toyota shocks. Will it be better than my TE with KDSS and Bilsteins? I don't know yet. The nosedive "issue" is a non-issue for me, I don't notice it.

Is it just me or do the production versions look much lower than the lift on the show truck?
definitely looks lower than the pre-prod versions to me as well. basically looks stock, in fact. (the rear, of course, is stock) i doubt that will negatively influence folks who are really into it, but in the end the Pro seems to be a pretty conservative appearance package and little more.

i'm glad to see the 4Runner get the extra attention from Toyota/TRD (despite less so than the Taco & Tundra) but it sure seems like a lot of sizzle and very little steak. i'll never understand the "TRD Pro" wheels in a 7" width. that's just straight up not getting it.

I'm willing to bet that Toyota ditched the KDSS and sunroof in order to hit a lower price point, especially when you consider the target market for the vehicle.

As i justify in my head the purchase of a TRD pro or TEP this is how I am weighing it at the moment:

$41,110 for TRD Pro
Pros
- Suspension (however, less of a plus now due to the lack of lift)
- TRD bling

Cons
- No sunroof
- Lack of paint color options
- TRD bling (at times i like it.... at times i dont)

$40,405 for TEP w/sunroof, w/KDSS
Pros
- I can get whatever color i want except Inferno
- KDSS
- Sunroof
- I actually like the look of the TE wheels

Cons
- Will cost me another $3k in suspension and tires (read $43,405 all in)

Am I missing anything?

2014 TEP's much less than 40.5k, got mine fully loaded for less than 39k. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/178193-pulled-tep-trigger.html

Well, funny you should ask this because the whole time I thought it was painted. But much to my shock, it is a cover! I believe the grille can be purchased. Looking into that tomorrow if I have time and will try and obtain a part #.

JM4Runner do you have an update to this? Would love to get my hands on one of these if that is the case.

One reason I decided against the TRD Pro was the 7 inch wheel. You are essentially paying extra for the wheels, which may look nice but at 7 inches, probably wouldn't be your first choice if you ever want 285s. Same with the tires, if you don't love the 265 Terra Graplers, then you are essetnailly paying extra for tires that you don't love. And of course, on the other side of the equation, you're forgetting about the resale value, which will probably always be higher for the TRD Pro, even if you upgrade the Trail into an all around better truck. If I were you, I'd go with the Trail and upgrade it how you want.

I'm new to this forum....haven't had a 4Runner since my '05' was totaled in 2010. It saved my life!! I'm interested in the TRD Pro 4Runner as I do lots of driving on rough roads/gravel/offroad for fun and profit. I've heard that stealerships are only allotted 1 4Runner TRD Pro as they only plan to make so many of them. But I've read on this site that people are able to order them. Are stealerships just telling us that so we jump and buy one at whatever price they ask? Also, what type of pricing are people getting on these (invoice or below?).

My only hesitation is the 4.0 with the 5 speed transmission. I haven't checked into it much so I don't know how strong/reliable of a set-up that is.

Any thoughts? Thank you.

Well on the preproduction TRD PRO they were using the front coil overs from the tacoma baja. I wonder if you can use those coil overs on the 4runner to get that lift in the front or do you think they modified the tacoma baja coil overs the fit on the 4runner

Both the 4.0 and 5 speed have been around for a while. Just looking around on here and tacoma world, there seems to be very low failure rates and very few problems for both. Although somewhat dated and not exactly hotrod hp and torque numbers, this is probably one of the best combos out there especially when it comes to reliability. Both my 4runners go down the freeway and pull my trailers just fine.

Thanks for the info.... I've actually been waiting for really awesome reports of the 3.0 VM Motori diesel they put in the Grand Cherokee.... they've had electrical issues, DEF issues, and transmission issues (the new ZF 8 speed).

I'm going to have to jump back to a 4Runner- not that it's a bad choice at all. I just had my heart set on the diesel hoping that it would be flawless. Well, it's not and they charge $5,000 over the V6.

I'd rather have reliability over improved economy or better specs. I drive almost 30,000 miles/year and a lot of it is real back roads in the middle of nowhere. I can't risk having my vehicle break down. My 1994 Toyota pickup with the 4 cylinder has 225,000 miles and it has NEVER failed me once!

My dealer left me a message today to call him for an update on my TRD Pro. Not sure what update means - was hoping he was going to say it is in. I guess I will find out tomorrow. I just hope they give me a fair trade-in on my 2010 LE. I also am wondering about the options. I asked about them and they told me there would be very few. I specifically said no running boards since I'm on the Shrockworks group buy for sliders so hopefully that will be the case. These pictures are getting me super pumped, though!

Can someone who has taken delivery of a TRD Pro already please snap a few detailed photos of the front coilovers? The area I want to really see is the bottom of the spring on the shock. I have a theory on something and want to see if I may be correct.

My dealer finally called this morning to let me know my TRD Pro arrived. When I arrived at the dealer I was surprised to find that it had a couple options that both the dealer and I didn't know it was going to have. It came with running boards, slide out cargo rack and roof rack cross bars. I'm actually ok with all these options even though it cost a little more than I expected. I only live a few miles from the dealer so my drive home was short but so far I'm loving it. This is replacing my Ford Raptor which I loved, but the size of the Raptor and only getting 9 mpg was getting old. I can't wait to get this out in the dirt.

That is one badass truck!!

How does the suspension feel?

Here is a pic that I took of the pre-production model that I saw at the Overland Expo West.

Thanks! Here's my theory....the front bilstein coilovers look like they have 3 different height positions. You can tell from the two visible lines under the bottom black cup holding the spring. This photo appears to have the coilover in the highest setting which is why the pre-production models all look level or even nose high. The photos of TRD Pro parts in a different thread show the coilover coming on the middle setting. I'm guessing the production trucks are set to the middle or lowest setting. I think they did this to eliminate the need to adjust headlights or potentially to keep the same fuel ratings. The same thing is true of a previous vehicle I owned...the Ford Raptor....it comes with the Fox coilovers on the lowest perch setting and many owners move it to the middle or top setting to change the look or firm up the ride. Just my guess after looking at a few photos online. I'm sure we'll know more shortly.

I think you could be right. I know what you mean about the Fox shocks on the Raptor as I had one too. I never did the perch adjustment on the Raptor as I liked the way it rode stock. I just went out in the garage and looked at the Toyota. It appears to be on the middle setting.

If the production 4Runner is on the middle and all the pre-production are on the 3rd (highest) setting, then that can explain the difference. It also means TRD Pro owners can raise the front up slightly if desired.

I had my Raptor raised from the bottom setting to the top setting at the same time I had a rear bump stop kit installed with deaver springs. That gave it a nose high look and I didn't love it. I ended up selling it shortly after. I think I'll keep the TRD Pro suspension totally stock....at least for a few years.

Excellent observation! As other have also said, this explains a bunch. As I mentioned a couple hundred posts back, the TRD guys that I talked with at the FJ Cruiser Summit said that the production version was going to sit a bit lower and more level than the pre-production versions. I believe you figured out how they have done this. Here are a few other photos that I took of the same pre-production TRD Pro 4Runner that I had seen. Take note of the fact that the front end is way high. In person it was noticeably nose up like a desert pre-runner truck.
