4runners in snow

Possible major winter storm here on Thursday. We’ll see. We only have a couple inches on the ground so far. Do you guys have any pics of your runners in some of the deep snow we’ve had so far in other parts of the country?

I'm hoping we get a good amount of snow! I don't have a 4R yet, but my Volvo XC70 is a lot of fun in the snow!

Just wondering, how ARE the Runners in deep snow? Does an SR5 with ATRAC do pretty well? I really hate open diffs, but I don't think a TRD or Trail will be in the budget. I'm hoping the SR5 can handle it without getting stuck due to open diffs.

BTW, a tire upgrade would be one of the first things I do.

Truckee last year, we were getting this much snow every night for a week straight. SR5 did great, even with the stock tires and before the Icon suspension/lift.

we have had quite a bit up here just to the north of you in New Hampshire, and it refuses to melt (current feel like temp is -10F) The 4Runner does very well particularly in deep snow, it has won best in the midsize segment in quite a few articles published by car magazines etc. keep in mind it's a mechanical system, so it's not going to work like a Subaru or Audi Quattro (both phenomenal systems) that tell the AWD system when to apply breaks and move power front to back. in deep snow, somewhere that 8-9" of ground clearance matters, like an unplowed private dirt road I would contest that there a few things better than a 4Runner... well tires matter, but assuming you have the right rubber. Happy New you from your fellow 4Runner owner in NNE!!!

Not quite as good as those pics, but for this S.Florida 4runner it’s not something it sees all of the time. These are from our trip Maryland to Vermont this week. (Side note, the Cooper AT3’s have so far performed well above expectations in these conditions, including driving around the mountain today in -5 degrees.)

No pics unfortunately, but past 30+ inch dump here in Allentown. My14TE with Michelin LTX's did just fine. No issues at all.

going from a fullsize pickup 4x4 to a 4runner, I find that the 4runner rear end can get squirrely without a little weight added in some conditions (unplowed surface streets).... then again I shouldn't be driving around unplowed surface streets (or be the first one to break the snow, lol).

I have driven a lot of different vehicles in the snow and you are right, the 4runner is a little light in the ass end

I have only found this to be true if I am in 2WD, if I enter my neighborhood for example which doesn't get the same attention from the plows as the main road I drive on to reach it, I have found the back end getting a little loose. if I am ready for it and in 4WD (and not driving like a lunatic) I don't seem to have an issue.

Saw this Limited Edition in a Youtube Video shortly after I bought my Trail, it convinced me not to worry.
It's Canadian, but the 30cm he mentions converts to almost 12 inches (11.8).

I've personally never had a problem with the snow, even in stock form on those crappy Duelers driving through up to 7 inches at 40mph (getting appalled looks from everyone I was passing). So I'm sure that the truck will handle a Nor'easter just fine.

I finally broke down and am getting Michelin's installed on Thursday after driving in a a few storms with the Dunlops. I looked hard at other tires but in the end the LTX is a tough tire to beat in snow/ice. Even during the many blizzards I have driven through in 21 years with my old Toyota Tacoma's...mind you with nothing but a tonneau cover for extra weight. It really isn't a tire that should be judged by it's "looks".

I looked hard at other tires but in the end the LTX is a tough tire to beat in snow/ice. Even during the many blizzards I have driven through in 21 years with my old Toyota Tacoma's...mind you with nothing but a tonneau cover for extra weight. It really isn't a tire that should be judged by it's "looks".

I have LTX's on my F-350 and E-350, I agree with you. I am going to put BFG KO's on my 4runner only because my "heavy" K5 Blazer would go anywhere in Tahoe with them on....and they look nice

Nice...we were probably there at the same time. I was plowing snow that deep at our house for many days last year.

nice, i was up working in bishop per diem at a pharmacy last year when they had that big @#@ss snow storm. I hauled butt out of town back to SD that night b/c I had to work in SD the following morning. Man that was a sketchiest drive, because none of the roads were plowed yet, and i left town at 7pm..... It either snowed or rained all the way back to SD with the 2 lane highway partially washed out (thank god for the 4runner) in some sections, or unplowed snow on the road. Basically, white knuckle driving for 5 hours.... Luckily for me, not many cars on the road due to chain enforcement and road washout.

Thats why I mentioned the rear end is a little loose..... It wanted to swing out a few times along that drive (but those winter conditions were abnormally harsh).


Only regret, I should have called in sick so I can snowboard. The locals said mammoth was clear of all out of towners who got scared and left early, lol.

I know. This was the one condition I have yet been in with them...they ride great on road, have been excellent in rain, held their own on rock, in mud and sand, but have yet to be in real snow and ice. Too bad they don’t pay to get a snowflake symbol stamped on them!

My 4runner was brand new and I never had it on snow before... I am used to driving much heavier vehicles in extreme conditions like that. I noticed the light rear end mostly when braking. When I filled the back end and Skybox with gear and added 3 people, the 4runner would plow snow no problem...that was with the stock Dunlop tires.

Yup, I've driven up to SLC/Park city Ut, since then from San DIego with a few passengers, and it wasn't as sketchy. so I think weight definitely helps in snow.

In my previous truck, which was a lifted tundra crewmax, it was beastmode in all weather conditions with just me (the driver)
