4runners lacking off-road

I've looked everywhere for a good video of a 5th gen actually tackling serious off road obstacles other than your basic SUV reviewer on you tube. Does anyone know of any cool videos of a 5th gen 4Runner going through some DEEP mud? Would be cool to see and compare.. Any basic equipped suv or cuv for that matter can go up a steep dirt hill or on dry trails with little pebbles. I wanna see some serious terrain tackled.

Deep mud is going to be a function of wheel speed, vehicle weight and tires. Put swampers on a 4Runner (or any 4x4 for that matter) and it will go through deep mud. For lots of pictures of rock crawling in serious terrain check out the 5th gen off road thread.

I couldn't find any good ones on YouTube. Maybe that's an indicator that the 4Runner isn't the right vehicle for you.

Congrats! You win the silliest post of the day award! 10 internet points for you!

Now, going through mud is simply a function of speed
I will take an Olds Cutlass at 50 mph and go further in your lifted brodozer going 10 mph.

Now if we have to go the same speed then the highest lifted brodozer with the best paddle tires will win. There is a lifted pickup truck forum in your future...

No diff lock, the instructors like to teach driving the truck without diff locks or A-TRAC. Working on my 2 footed driving there. Using like brake to control wheel spin just as A-TRAC does.

Hmmm I'm assuming you don't mean both brake and gas together as that would be rough on the brakes no? I mean, compared to A-TRAC which I imagine only clamps down the spinning tire and not all 4 at once like the brake pedal?

Cool vid either way man!

Lol. My Friend (way back in the day) and I actually got his '69 Mustang Grande about 2.5 feet off the ground when we were like 17. Does that count? :-)

If anybody is wondering, no, the Mustang did not survive. Poor, poor Mustang. First my friend disintegrated the tranny doing reverse neutral drops and then 3 months later the old girl met this fate. That car was messed up. Picture a taco shell. LOL

Some of us get too busy wheeling to fiddle with the camera. …Or the battery dies. I'll run my Go Pro until it dies but then I suck at editing and my computer skills are s**t, so it never gets uploaded.

Modulating the brakes going 1-2mph won't hurt them.

It will hurt your axles. I've broken a few that way. IMO it does almost nothing for traction. We can examine the physics of it, but I only think it offers a very small benefit with a torsen style posi. Otherwise it's just kinda wasting gas.

My guess is the instructor is an old military guy, or using an old military guide book. Hummers had torsen diffs, so it did work to some degree on them.

I understand where he's coming from in regards to learning the basic and getting a feel for what your vehicle is capable of, but it reminds me of the old "using a calculator in math class" conundrum. If I have advanced technology at my disposal, why would I not use it? I wholeheartedly agree that it's important to know what your vehicle is doing at all times by learning what is mechanically going on when you engage A-TRAC or the locker, but it seems like it would be just as important know how and when it's appropriate to use those technologies as it to know how to wheel without them.

That being said, I sometimes take on what I call the "2WD Challenge" and see how far I can get on my local trails in 2WD with traction control and stability control off. When it's dry the answer is a lot more than you would think, but there's one hill that's steep enough that I don't feel comfortable not being in low-range.

Just don't get a LE edition, they are only good for mall crawling, just look at bimrunner thread.

Not videos, but yeah, should answer your questions. Unless you live on an alternate planet where "if it ain't on YouTube, it didn't happen"..,
