4runners lacking off-road

What are you really wanting to do? I see your in Florida I know there are some deep ass mud holes there. If you are wanting something that will really take a beating then stock is not for your need. I would really go through build threads and read up and look at the off-road section too.
But I'm just a 3rd Gen fan- what do I know about wheeling in a 4Runner anyhow.

Just my 2 cents on 4wd training:
If you are taking lessons in off roading they want to teach empirical techniques that you can use no matter what vehicle you find yourself in. It's not factual like math at all, it's more instinct and experience like public speaking. You learn to talk to small groups with no mike and some note cards first cause the computer and Powerpoint is a crutch that creates bullet point readers who bore people to death. Empirical techniques make you a better driver in every vehicle.
In this case double foot teaches you the balance between maintaining just enough speed so that you aren't breaking things and maintain forward movement and not so much that without a locker you get stuck and even with a locker put added strain on your drive train. Better to understand the "feel" of this and be even better once your locker is on. You want to master certain skills before using tools that let you get into trouble.

My Runner sucks off road. That's why I'm switching to a Highlander. I've heard AWD is the best off road. And I simply can't live without a power lift gate.

I had a 2wd sr5 that I took through more shit than I've seen any videos of. Going up a hill and rock climbing can have the same answer as what a few of you have said for mud "go fast get tires". I use to take my 2wd up and over shit my friends 4wd trucks wouldn't go over, either because they were to scared to break something or they just could not physically make it over.... You put a prius going the right speed and it will go through the same shit, but that wasn't my question.I was simply asking "where is a video of a 5th gen in some deep mud". I remember the first video I saw when I started looking at 4runners was a kelly blue book review on youtube. A bunch of guys with NO PLAN got a 5th gen stuck in 6" of snow with garbage stock tires. It was the stupidest thing I've ever seen.
try searching for "4runner moab" and grab a beverage.
I don't know that you'll see many involved in a mud run. That's more for a pickup. 4runners excel at offroading. Muddy holes are for brodozers.

I go through mud much more than I would like. A few weeks ago while going out to a job site I had to drive through mud for a few miles. We have gotten a lot of rain back here this summer and everything is wet and muddy.
I don't dislike going through mud because it makes my 4Runner dirty. I dislike going through copious amounts of mud because that is one of the worst things you can do to your vehicle. Mud gets EVERYWHERE. Dust seals, shock shafts, bearings, light housings, sensors, wiring and every component that comes in contact with mud. Running through mud regularly will reduce the life of driveline and suspension components drastically. The only mod that will help negate this premature wear is to lift the truck sky high and that brings on a whole host of other problems.
We all go through mud but usually to get from point "A" to point "B" not because that mudhole is a destination.
Why buy a vehicle known for its reliability and durability and then go out there and do things to it that will ruin the reliability and durability? That's one of the stupidest things you can do to a truck. Even guys who work off road here like miners, lumber and drillers don't like mud because it ruins their vehicles. These are guys who drive trails daily! They go out of their way to keep out of the mud.
If your idea of a good time is to go drive around in a wet stink hole then have at it. Buy an old beater, lift it up about three feet and put tractor tires on it and have fun! If you want to have a vehicle that will still be able to take you off road 15 years from now using the same parts as you are using today then buy a 4Runner and only go through mud when there is not a way around the mud.

Mud is not serious terrain. Go check WarnerD9's thread to see a 5th gen really wheeling. Or Narkhalek. Or Jonessy. Or Bimrunner. Or any of fifty other guys in the 5th gen section.
