4Running Daily's Build Thread

Bought a set of spindles and more CV's for a ridiculous price. Only have 100K miles on them. Also ordered spindle gussets for them. Plan is to replace the front wheel bearings and weld on spindle gussets. Make them nice and pretty.

Plans for the truck currently basically include lots of welding. I should be buying a welder within the next few months. I'll start playing around with Solidworks pretty soon too. I'm gonna start with small projects before moving to the bigger ones. First things first, new front bumper with a lot better approach angle. I'll stick to a hybrid design with a combo of tube and plate. After that I'll switch to stock length lower control arms for the front. If that goes well then I'll eventually make a long travel kit as well. I'm hoping snivilous makes a built spindle that I can steal ideas from. I'm kind of hoping to find some 2nd gen Tacoma spindles or FJ Cruiser spindles and build my lower control arm to work with their stronger design. No more lower ball joint issues with those 4 bullshit bolts. Theoretically it should work assuming you built a lower control arm to connect correctly to it. Then you could use 2nd gen Tacoma front brakes too. Lastly, when I'm really confident in my abilities, I plan on linking the rear. I'll be running a 3 Link setup with a pan hard. The goal is anything over 16 inches of vertical travel. I'll probably run 14" or 16" ADS coilovers and bypasses.

List of things that need to be addressed if I kept it:
-4.88 Gears and a Front Locker
-Supercharger/Turbo
-Baja XRS Seats
-Sound Deadening
-Updated speakers
-App Radio 4 Headunit
-Dual Cases or a Lefty Case
-Long Travel front
-Buy a real welder
-Relocate gas tank using F150 Tank
-Link rear using ADS Coilovers
-Plate frame
-Roll Cage

Anything else?

I think you are incorrectly using the phrase "Needs to be addressed" :P
I was expecting a list of electrical gremlins or unfix-able noises or something.

I do very much like this list though! Any specific plans for the rear link setup?

The regear needs to happen soon. I'm kind of over driving around on 4.10's. Then I'm gonna replace front wheel bearings hoping that eliminates some vibes. Lots of sound deadening needs to happen too. I cleaned up my electrical gremlins, and I'm really really happy with my new radio.

for some reason I keep thinking you in AZ... but then I realize you're in CA, and the shop here in phx won't do you any good...

Glad you're keeping it...

oh.. well then...

my Axle guy is Nate from Arizona Differential (602-272-4600) he defenitly know's his stuff, and if ANY issue on it (ie leak or something else) he will fix it right... IF he didn't do it the first time.

I prefer Sierra Expeditions because they're walking distance from my apartment. But I'll keep him in mind.

Thank you!

Some know I've been suffering from some clutch trouble recently. The car refuses to go into first from a stop. So I replaced the master cylinder, which didn't fix the problem. So I decided to replace the slave cylinder too. Well while removing the slave cylinder, I found the hard line that goes from the flex line to the slave is partially stripped. So I called up a friend in the parts department to see if he could get me another one. Turns out there are only 3 of those lines left in the country. So after a few days I have a new one in my hands. Install everything only to find out that didn't fix the problem either.

Well I was scheduled to drive to San Diego this weekend anyways, so I did that stopping as little as possible. (17.5 mpg on the highway by the way, not too bad at 75mph.)

Once I got here I shot my friend and mechanic a text and he said he would take a look at my transmission on Monday. So in the meantime I set out to do what I've wanted to for a very long time, finally tub the driver's side firewall. I made a pretty aggressive chop and it should clear perfectly. Buttoned that up today, but I still had a sour taste in my mouth because I still didn't have a truck that drove properly.

Right after I put the fender back on, I went around and gave everything a once over like a normally do. I torqued the steering rack bolts as well as a few other things. Greased zerks etc. Anyways, I found a tremendous amount of diff oil all over the passenger rear tire and hub. Shit. After removing the axle shaft, I confirmed that my seal and my bearing's are done for.

So I'm frustrated. I haven't been able to wheel because I never tubbed the driver's side firewall, and now that I've done that I have a truck that doesn't even work. :(

I know the feeling dude, literally every time I fix something I think Im good for a while (like an idiot). Thennnnnn usually the same week I find something else that needs to be fixed.

Then I get sick of it and think about selling it lol

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that, hope you can get it fixed soon.

On a better note, I can't wait to see what you've done with the firewall- I've been looking at the various options for chopping them, curious about how it would work!

Sorry about your truck problems, hopefully the trans isn't what's causing the 1st issue... (well there's nowhere else to look so good luck on that...)

I'd like to see the tub job if you have pictures.

I'll post some photos tomorrow if I remember. I did the driver side differently. Basically you can make a sheet of metal that overlaps the sheet metal inside the car, or you can build like a box that fills the gap. It's hard to explain, pictures do it better justice. But basically because I have a 3rd pedal (the clutch), I had to leave as much room as possible near the pedal so my giant foot can get in there.

Also, the thoughts of selling are almost completely gone. I'm so so close to having a reliable car. The wheel bearings and axle seals are one of the few things I haven't replaced. It's still a 20 year old truck, and I keep forgetting that.

Don't forget to come get those LCA's...

Maybe someday you can help me tub my firewall.
