4th gen 4R (2006) Repairs - What would you do?

So after living happily with my 4.7L V8 2006 4Runner for quite a few years, it is about to hit 100k. It also needs the following work - the following was quoted from Toyota Service.

(2) Exhaust Gaskets - $1100 (has the tick - but they see no crack)
Muffler - $900 (Tailpipe has separated from muffler)
Front Brakes - $290 (may have to also replace rotors - they were cut once)
90K Service - Timing Belt and Water Pump - $1200
Tires - $940 (I can do better on this price)
Alignment - $100

Also, the electric locks in the front don't work all the time. (previously quoted $400 per door)

What do you think of these prices? And how far would you go with getting the service done? Do I put out some cash and live happily for a few more years or put some cash down on a 5th gen?

OP, while I'm not a mechanic, most of those prices seem a bit absurd to me. I can't imagine a muffler and install running $900 unless that's an entire cat back exhaust system. Brakes, tires and alignment all seem high. Unless you're attached to Toyota fixing them, I might suggest you do some shopping around. :shrug:

Try to find a good independent garage to get a quote from, they can still get the same Toyota parts, but the labor will not be so absurd.

The Toyota dealers quote a job by how many hours the computer lists that it takes for a repair, and charges you that amount of labor hours even if it takes
less time to do the repairs.

An independent garage will probably charge the amount of hours the job actually took, and their labor rate may be significantly lower .

For that price on the headers, you could just go with some Doug Thorley replacements. Its about $1000 labor, but they wont ever crack again and you gain decent power.

A muffler shop can weld your rear tailpipe section together for $50 or less probably, if its not too rusty.

I notice we've got around the same year and you're having some exhaust gasket issues.

I just picked up a 2007 with (supposedly) only 43k on it. It's got a ticking on the passenger side exhaust manifold. Had it checked out and I'm thinking it's the gasket, not a cracked manifold.

Is this a "thing" with this generation? Because I'm thinking what fricken 43k mile vehicle has an exhaust manifold gasket issue???

This is also to say that the condition of the rest of the exhaust is laughable. I know it came from the east coast, but the entire exhaust is in bad shape. Now I'm worried the mileage was rolled back and I got taken at a dealer over here.

I ended up trading it in, but...

I confirmed through the dealer and a mechanic friend that the issue was, in fact, a known issue with the flange where the manifold connects to the block. It was a hairline crack that would result in the ticking noise - the tick would decrease as the metal heated & expanded and “locked” the crack in place. I loved my 2006 Sport V8...the engine was great, but with 110,000 miles on it, I got a great deal on a 2016 and love it too. Good luck!
