4th gen 4Runner Secrets?

I've known of this for a while and I don't know if you all who live in cold climates have come across this:

The RECIRC button for the air automatically switches to fresh when the engine heats up and I haven't turned on the blower yet. This only happens when its below 40 deg Fahrenheit.

Which sucks when you have it at recirc, and then it switches to fresh and you end up driving behind a diesel.

It also is a rude awakening when its (-4degrees) outside and the engine is barely warm and it automatically switches from recirc to fresh and air that starts coming through the face vents is frigid!

I just found out yesterday that when you move the sunvisors to block the sun coming in from the side they can slide out a little more for extra coverage, my old Tundra had little extensions that slid out, I like those better but these will do...just thought I'd share.

Not sure if this made it in here somewhere, but the 4th Gen has an incline sensor in it which automatically adjusts the fuel gauge reading when driving up or down hill for the fuel moving position in the tank.

For anyone looking for the famous burger tray in the rear seat by the way - this was mysteriously deleted from the vehicles with the 3rd row of seats and swapped with just the two cup holders coming out of the centre arm rest. If you have the third row, the middle row of seats folds up in a completely different way to if you have just the two rows, which may be connected with the vanishing burger tray in fact.

yeah I know about the smaller one...that was what annoyed me at first the fact that it was set up almost like my old Tundra minus the pull out.

Just found this one out today. When opening and closing the rear window using the key (to the left lowers it, the right raises it), opening the window unlocks all the door and closing it locks all the doors.

When your finished using the front windows Defrost, press the Defrost button again to go back to your last setting.

Or, If you have any electronic devices not working properly and need a reset or the stereo needs to be reset, you can "crank" the key again without hurting the starter. That is a very useful feature

I don't know if this counts, but it works on both the 4th and 5th Gen- fold up the bottom part of the rear driver's side seat, and you have a perfectly sized level surface for placing a pizza box. No more sliding cheese, no more oil stained upholstery!

Don't know if anyone mentioned this or not already, but it took me a month to find it. The arm rest folds open from the top, where you see the line in it. It makes for a great bottle prepare stationed if you're a Mom! Lol

just found that out the other day by accident. pretty awesome.

If for some reason you want to drive fast around curves and you want to decrease the center of gravity of your rig?,! Just drop every single window to completely open, you will lower that much glass weight by 2 ft.

Little benefit.

Also if you put 100 lbs all the way in the back of your trunk your handling will improve.

After 5 years, I finally used the trash bag holder, but it wasn’t for trash. I bought some Wine and some 22oz beer bottles. I didn’t want to lay them down since they would be sliding / clacking all over the place. So I pulled up the trash bag holder and placed the bottles in side with the plastic bag. I was surprised to see they stayed in place with no problems.

Also when my 7 year old was sitting in the back passenger sit, i would lay
the front seat down all the way down so she can see the road and stretch out her legs.

if you leave your map lights on, they turn off about the dame time as the headlights after you have locked the truck. however, as soon as you push the unlock button, your map lights

Cruz control.

Most cars have this feature….but just in case some are not aware.

After setting the cruz, if you hit the brakes it disengages the cruz. You don’t have mess around to “set” the cruz to get back to the same speed. You only need to push up on the cruz lever. (I think it is referred to reset) The vehicle will accelerate back to the original speed you set. (this does not work if you turn off the cruz)

For someone like me this is a nice feature. I push my speed up to the maximum level possible just under “get a ticket speed.” In a 70 MPH zone, I set my cruz precisely at 79 MPH. Most odometers overstate the speed, so I am likely going about 76 or 77.

I hate it when someone cuts me off and I need to brake. BUT, this feature makes it more bearable as the vehicle gets back to the desired speed without me thinking about it.

i believe pushing it is "resume" not "reset", and you dont have to push on the brake and get that big jerk, you can just pull it in (i think its in) which is the cancel button, which doesnt turn it off, and it will slowly decelerate, then you can press resume to go back up to your speed. :fro:

I wonder why so many people think this. you can get a speeding ticket for going 71. why would you want to, anyways? I've found the sweet spot for max MPG's to be about 65.
