4th Gen Average Longevity of Front Brakes

What is the average longevity of front brakes for a 4th Gen? I am at 46,000 miles with no indication that brake pad replacement is required. I wondered how many more miles I had left.

I know longevity of brakes are one of those things that depend on driving habits to some degree.

My third gen I drove 100,000 miles never having changed the brake pads

I'm about to hit the 80k mark with my '04 and my front pads still has over 50% left, granted the 1st 30k were nearly all highway miles. I'm surprised as to how long they've lasted despite my aggressive driving/braking.

The pad life will mostly be determined by the type of driving you do. I got 32k out of the front brake pads in my 2006 4runner. That was from using the truck for my daily driving, which is mostly stop and go driving and no towing. I haven't changed the pads in my 2008 4Runner yet as it only has 7k on it.

At 32,000...the front brake pads look exactly like the 1st time I saw them when I did my 1st rotation.

After reading that a lot of members didn't have to replace them till 80k plus...now I'm not sure why I bought a 2nd set of pads.

They're just going to sit in the garage shelf for awhile.

My 2 years is coming up...time for a Brake Flush.

I just looked at mine the other day while getting my tires rotated. I have about 63,000 miles and they still have plenty of pad left. I would say I am a semi agressive driver but mostly highway driving with light traffic.

Got mine replaced at 76,000 miles. Mostly highway. They still had a little bit left, but I just had them replaced as a precaution as it was entering rain season at the time.

My rears still have plenty of life left.

Guys,
I need your help. Just got back from the dealer and they said i have 2 mm left on my front brake pads. I only have 27,500 miles on it and its a 04 Runner. My driving habits are mostly highway. what is a good way to check to see if the pads are worn out besides taking the tires off? I see some people on this forum which 30, 40, and even 60K without changing front pads.

I think there is no average longevity (that's just me). I say this because everybody has their own way of driving and stopping. Some ppl may have a heavy foot, slam on the breaks, so on and so forth. I owned different cars in my life that i don't even keep track how many miles my brakes would last for.

A little over 25K on mine and they still look brand new... about 1/2 and 1/2 city/highway driving.

I agree with everyone else though depends on your driving habits as to how long your pads will last you... and don't wait for the metal on metal grind.. replace them when you start to hear that high pitch squeal while under normal driving.

I've got 79k miles and still have 25% left on both front and rear. I'll probably replace them before winter however.

the dealer must be lieing to me then saying i have 2 mm left. cause i haven't hear any squealing when i brake. when the brakes start squealing and making noises then you know its time to change them right? thanks!

My '04 has 72k and I believe it's still on original pads (I bought it used), mostly highway driven though and I'm usually don't slam on the brakes.

I agree that it all depends on driving habits and conditions so there's really no "average". I'd just check them at every tire rotation.

I'm at almost 93k and my brakes just started squealing. I plan on changing them this weekend. I've never had brakes last this long! I may do the rear brakes too.

I had to replace my front pads last fall at 48K. Best guess is I'm doing about 75% commuting in stop and go driving (DC suburbs), 1% off-road and the rest are highway miles.

We have 71500k on our 03 Limited V6 and we have replaced the pads twice and turned the rotors once. Plus, we have only had the 4runner since it had 36000k miles on it.

We live right the exit of the interstate and she likes to stop fast.

First set 28K dealer, pads only!
went to sears on second time for pulsating and shuttering @ 55K
had the rotors turned, probably not a good thing they went bad in under two years.
Ordering Brembo rotors tomorrow and cermaic pads from toyota. now that I'm at 59K

I called my local dealer and was told I could only get semi-metalic pads and that OEM ceramics were not availiable from Toyota.

The first set will last a while. If you choose to reuse the originally rotors expect about half of the life especially if you get them resurfaced. I got 60K+ out of my first with heavy highway use and traffic and replaced them again at about 100K. I had to change them again at 127K due to rotor warpage.

When I bought my 05, with 53k miles, the dealer "a porsche dealer, not toyota", said they had new brakes put on the front. I'm at 66k miles now, and know the rears are getting close.

Question though, as I'm wondering if they used oem parts on the front..... How much brake dust do you guys get on your rims? Mine get covered in the stuff. I had all 4 rotors turned about 3 months ago, yet now the truck pulsates horribly when coming to a stop. If I hit the brakes at above 55+mph, the steering wheel even shakes left and right, and the car feels like it pulls to the left. I'm thinking the rears are getting to the point of not being effective enough to offer balanced braking and putting too much force on the fronts. But, I'm not an agressive braker, and when I come to a stop, I never just sit there with my foot on the brakes. I am aware of putting hot-spots into the rotors, so I will normally inch up to let the hot spots to cool, or pop it into neutral and take my foot off the brakes. My rotors measure well within specs. So I'm wondering if they used cheapo pads which are causing all the dust and putting too much heat into the rotors? You guys get a lot of dust on the fronts as well? I get none on the rears, just the fronts.
