Like others have said. There are a lot of other things on this circuit, the wiring harness is rated lower and I'll repeat myself: I wouldn't upsize the bulbs.
 
There will not be a problem with the circuit up to the wire leading to the bulb itself. The only problem COULD be with the socket and/or the wire leading to it (which could be checked easily). This 15A circuit (and all circuits) are designed to have safety over rating. This means that with all loads applied, the total load will not exceed 80% of the circuit's amp design. Also the circuit is fused to protect it from overload.

I would say if this was a car, I would definitely not do it. Since this is a truck, alot of the wire harness and relays are heavy duty design for off additional lighting. Usually that means maybe double the ampere capacity, but in this case tripling may be a risk. I see the main problem area may be in the lense and the bulb sockets, but if you don't turn on your back up light for more than a minute at a time, you may be able to get away with it.

If you want to try the 50-watt back-up bulbs, then go right ahead. Your 4Runner will not burn to the ground. Worse case scenario is that you'll blow the fuse. No biggie.

Right...But my point is when someone tries the 50W bulbs, blows a fuse and then replaces the fuse with a higher rating that is where the problem lies.

If someone tries this and it works with the stock fuse then you're golden!!! But if the fuse blows, time to switch back...
 
There are some upgrades for back-up lightings on most vehicles and the are generally higher wattage. I've installed one with 55 watts years ago on my old truck (Mazda) with no problem. THERE was a caution on the packaging though that said "Do not engage REVERSE for longer than necessary as this will cause excessive HEAT on the light housing".
There is another option. Check out the link below. I too, am considering on upgrading my back-up lights but do not want to install another light below the bumper. I am considering the LED (w/ the blueish accent or the PIAAs). 4th Gen 4Runner back-up lights are the 921 type.

So it's a size 921. This is what I wanted to know the most, since my manual simply says "Type C wedge bulb".

the best way.. is to have a trunk monkey... and have him hold a maglite.. and wave... and instruct you backing up...


Doubles as a snow removal monkey and anti theft monkey......



(If anyone seen the Suburban Insurance commercial ads...)
