I searched the forum without success, so please forgive me if I missed it.

It appears there is a lot of interest in converting standard turn signal bulbs to LEDs, but frustration mounts when the signals end up hyper flashing. I've read one can buy resisters for each bulb circuit, but the easiest solution appears to be replacing the flasher behind the fuse panel under the driver's side of the dashboard.

Unfortunately, it appears that buyers of said flasher end up with the wrong one being shipped to them and they have no idea where to get the correct one.

After all these years, my question is simply if any of you have been successful in replacing your flasher with a compatible module that works with LED turn signals (if so, where did you find it and which one is it?); and if it would make a difference if the vehicle is equipped with daytime running lights.

If you can find the right bulb, I would talk to the people at V-LEDs! They're amazingly helpful and their products are amazing, as well as their customer service. You can easily add an inline resistor to each side, and there is enough space behind the tail light to tap a resistor in (I had done it with my RX8 and LOVED it).

There is a warning about LEDs. They can look VERY dim in the day light, so be wary that your day-time visibility may go down in some cases, but at night, they are unbeatable.

If I were to do it (which I do plan on doing it) I would get everything from V-LEDs and ask them any/all questions on how to wire in a resistor. It's easy, relatively cheap, and easy to go back to stock if you don't like it.
 
I just received my amber led corner bulbs from VLED's, as well as the license plate and backup bulbs. I'll let you know how the new amber led's go, I was unaware of the hyper blinking before ordering so hopefully they act like the regular bulbs.
 
when switching the turn signal bulbs from a regular to led, youll get hyper flasing, leds take less power thats why the flasher relay thinks a bulb is blown. theres two method of solving this, either buy a new flasher relay, or take the original and solder a few resistors, someone did it before by solder some resistors.
 
@ Riceandpho, Do you know if we could have switchback LED for our 4runner? I was thinking about an LED that is white as a DRL and turn amber when the turn signal is activated (like on those audi/european cars). Seems like there are a lot of options for switchback LED for 1157 bulb but not 1156 (which is the bulb for the DRL/turn signal in our 4runner)

Damn wish I would have known that. Where/which flasher relay would I use? Are they easy to install? I don't have a soldering iron so that's my only option. Thanks
 
Im not very knowledgeable on lighting /wiring. What does that do and where would I install it? Appreciate the help.
 
Essentially, you put your power line (HOT Turn Signal wire) into the tap splice, and the cut end of your resistor wire into the splice as well. A metal gate lowers which will cut the plastic coating around the wire and create a terminal connection between the two. Repeat the same with the GROUND wire in the Tail Light wiring and the second half of the resistor.

Wiring in a resistor cancels out any power savings you get from led's.

I would advise against those tap splices I have seen many broken and badly corroded wires from them.

I live in WI and it's -6 outside but once it gets warmer I plan on doing a led conversion I will post the parts I use.

Hey guys,

So I ordered the 8 pin led flasher relay from VLeds and I can not find the factory one for the life of me.

I removed the fuse junction box and looked all around it, bit I didn't see any that would connect to the flasher.

I'll check again, but wow I don't get why they had to make this so difficult to locate such a critical part.
 
you have to drop the inner fuse block behind the access panel.

1- drop lower dash panel
2- drop metal bracket
3- remove the two nuts and one bolt drop the fuse block and pull down.
4- the flasher is on the top of the block on the backside of the fuses. it should be black.

the 8 prong flasher is only good of you don't have DRL. if you do have them then you need a 12 pin flasher. AFAIK there is no led version of it but there is a mod to fix it and I did it and works perfectly.

I have DRL and would appreciate any detail you can share on your mod.... :thumb3:
