I haven't replaced my rack but I could be at some point in the future.
From my research into rebuilt racks, Rack Doctor seems to be at the top of the list, but I have no first hand experience with thier rebuilt racks..yet...but when and if I replace mine they will be most likely be who I choose to buy from...I have read too many bad reviews from other rebuilders.
They have a lifetime warranty...if you ship your old unit back to them within 40 days and free shipping as well.

steering rack bushing question
bought the poly bushings for the 03 to 09 Toyota steering rack but after I pulled the rack out there is 2 mounting locations on the rack to the cross member. The one side is oblong and the other is round. Is this normal?? The bushings are both round?? This could be the cause of my rack moving slightly upon turning the steering wheel. The bolt can move back and forth in the oblong bushing.

Its quite possibly the reason for your rack moving side to side that much. Does it look like the Tacoma bushings will work? I'd be shocked if they didn't. 1st gen Tacomas and 3rd gen 4runners use a lot of the same parts underneath.
I’m going to buy these and try to install them without totally removing the rack haha. Ironically enough it states they are made to fit a bunch of different vehicles which confirms my suspicion about Tacoma rack bushings being the same. Will post more about them when I get them installed
Thats basically what mine look like, but if you look at new steering racks for Toyota 4runner you will see that the rack has an oblong mount on the left side. Just type in your year of 4runner and look at all the new racks offered online and you will see what im talking about. Bye the way...impossible to do on the truck, have to pull it all the way out. If you take off the 14mm bolt holding the belt pully on the bottom of the truck just above the steering rack bolt you can pull the bolt all the way out and slide the rack out towards the rear of the vehicle pretty easily. Only took me 2 hrs to pull the rack.
Interesting! Is your 4runner a v8 or v6? 2wd or 4wd? Having a 4wd means the rack isn’t going towards the rear of the vehicle at all. I was reading guys on Tacomaworld were cutting the driver side rack mount bolt shorter to get it out, loosening the pulley sounds easier. Not sure what challenges I will run into since I have the V8 and 4wd lol, worst of all worlds maybe.
