4th Gen Stuck In The Sand

Now my question for you:

Explain how he could dig himself in so deeply and then just back right out without a problem if it wasn't related to his ATRAC being inoperable and then operable again.

Read my posts again.

In the second video, there is someone behind the passenger side, we don't know what that person did.

We can see from both videos that he did attempt to reverse, but wasn't getting anywhere (forward or reverse). He probably tried it without the center diff locked, heard the noises, beeping and clicking, then locked the center diff without giving the systems a chance to work.

One of the worst things you can do is go into soft sand with fully inflated tires.

Good point.

I did answer your question.... I'll reiterate for you:

Even, I have suggested a possible explaination.

Jacal, good post. You're right that he should give some time for ATRAC/TRAC to work. I am not so sure that it would have helped much because he dug himself pretty bad.

And from past experience with sand, it is easy to get stuck if you lose momentum...trust me, i know...my brother (LR Discovery) and my '02 4runner got stuck once in sand...and i am pretty well-versed in how ATRAC/TRAC works!

How do you know that the driver was not already in 4-LO, diff locked, and in gear 1?? I do not think that being in gear 1 is that important in this type of situation.

Agreed sand is different, even different than snow I have found!

Ultimately, I think the correct useage *did* contribute to getting him out, despite his lack of understanding of the system.

As far as being in 4-lo, diff lock etc - I do not know for a fact; that comment was meant to represent what I think I would have done in that situation. And I agree, 1st gear and 4-lo would not necessarily be helpful, just my own habit to keep the rpms low, torque up, and take load off the engine.

I remain unconvinced the was center locked. We never see front and back simultaneously. The system, with the center locked, is pretty effective and predictable and should be reasonably yielding to analysis. When unlocked, the system is less predictable and more prone to odd behavior. Between the back-to-front-to-back flow of power, TRAC, and VSC, the interactions affecting operation when stuck have the potential to be pretty complicated. The behavior I saw didn't match perfectly with what I would expect unlocked, either, but since what I saw was seemingly odd behavior, I'll assume the vehicle was in its less predictable mode -- the one that's more likely to exhibit odd behavior in the first place.

That was a predictable response from an unpredictable member for a predictable situation by a 4x4 system that is not predictable if the center diff was not locked for unpredictable reason by a supposedly predictable driver who for unpredictable reason cannot get out of a predictable situation.

:D, just kidding JB, but your response was a doozy to read! :D I guess that none of us will ever know what really happened in the video.

What language are they saying in the video?? I wonder if we can get more info from someone who understands the camera person.

Hey, I resemble that remark..:p

I don't know, but if it turns out they're saying "we locked the center differential, why can't we get out?" I'm disappearing for a while.

(Keep the rooting to a minimum, please):D

I Know Whats going on!!!!!!!!

The 4runner you guys saw on that video is from Venezuela and i think it's exported directly from japan or colombia. I have one of those 4runner here in Venezuela and they don't bring the ATRAC/TRAC or the center diff lock. They have 2wd 4hi and 4lo that is it. I hope this answer a lot of questions.....

So I have to say I am disappointed... From everything I have read it seems like the 4th Gen 4Runner has an excellent Torsen center diff which can be locked. But what about the front and rear diffs? I figured the VSC & TRAC would handle the wheel spin from left to right. Granted the driver here is not that great and doesn't use the brakes or limit his throttle but I still expected the 4Runner to transfer some power to the 2 wheels that weren't spinning at all. Anyone know what went wrong here?

you can drive a toyota camry on the beach if you time the tides, put the tires down and just go...i see people go up and down the beach in a tercel all the times...

What an amazing twist. Thanks for chiming in.

ha, mustve done something dumb.

ill bet he came in slow, in 2wd, the front wheels sunk and dug, and by then it was too late.

ive never been EVEN close to stuck in sand (stock or no)...... so i cant really see an explanation.

where abouts are you from? the sand over here in australia can get soft and deep, people often understimate the danger of beach driving here (i have before too haha) it easy to get pulled down into the ocean because of steep declines and soft boggy sand..

i ask because i've been stuck only once in sand (almost sideways mind you) but i've been close a few times coz of the nature of some of the beaches here, in L4 3rd gear trodding along slower than walking pace, as soon as you stop you're stuck.

I sir, am from Florida. The sandbar hanging off the SE USA.
I dont doubt the ozzie sand is gnar, but I bet its the inclines/declines that make it more of a problem. I welcome sand that wants to challenge me! I actually hope to move to aus in the next few years as I am a marine bio undergrad and also might surf, a little ;-); so if i ever make it ill ring u up!

and I just do not believe your last sentence, sorry :biggrin2:

If you will take alook again the second video, before the 4r get out from the sand they put something on the spinning tire to get some traction. When I was in Saudi Arabia, we always get stuck in the sand dunes. Reason ? lost of momentum. If we can't get out from forward/reverse and swinging the steering side by side, we deflete the tire start to shake the truck side by side until the tires started to move up. If this will not work, we will put something from the speening tire and get some tracktion. This are some technics we learn from the local Saudi's who live in the deserted areas . Note not all of their trucks are 4W drive. Most of them are using NISSAN DATSUN. If any body aware of this vehicle.

Hey BadRunner, nice rig you have there.

What configuration of Front and Rear Diff's are in those T4Rs they sell there (open F/R, LSD R/Open F, or something else?) and what kind of 4WD system is it.

just wondering
