4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

hi all first post here. I just acquired a new to me 2004 v8. the previous owner just put in new front and rear shocks about 15k ago but I'm pretty sure the springs are still original (205k on the odometer). I'm looking into doing a modest lift to size up in tires, probably a 2/1 spacer lift since I don't do much offroading right now and the shocks are pretty much new, but was thinking I should probably get new springs as well while I'm at it.

I didn't see much in a couple hundred pages of reading about keeping the stock shocks and just (modestly) upgrading springs. Does anyone have a recommendation for this kind of set up? thanks in advance.

I just replaced XREAS with 5100s and Moog Springs, they're cheap and gave me around the amount of lift you're looking for. I can dig up part numbers if that helps.

Also, my original springs were shot, well past due at 115k

With stock shocks, stay with stock replacement springs... whether you go with Toyota, Moog, or others.

If you use any "lift" springs, you will need new longer shocks made for your specified amount of lift. (i.e. Bilstein 5100)

Otherwise go with a full kit (OME, Dobinson, Toytec)

How do i choose one?!

Someone please help me choose one or the other!

Local shop quoted me $780 to install 5100's all the way around. Price includes parts and alignment.

Seems to be a pretty decent price?

I figured $100 of that is an alignment, so $680 for the install divided by 4, you're looking at $170 per corner. Assume labor rate is around $100/hr, you're looking at 1.7 hrs per corner.

I'd say it seems a tad high, but if they have to split your existing struts apart to swap springs and re-assemble using a spring compressor this probably is about right. If you were giving them assembled struts to swap with new spring seats etc then I think it would be a tad high but not unreasonable.

make sure the shocks can accompany a 2" lift before looking into lift springs. Maybe, instead of lift springs you could replace the current springs with oe replacements like the moogs and get your lift using spacers..or spend the coin and start from zero and do something like a OME or dobinson "mid" lift...

4WP in Pelham Al just quoted $830 for all 4 installed on my '06 Limited 4WD V6 but that included the 5100 shocks!
I did add the Bilstein B12 1.75" lift springs which came out to $902 total installed after I convinced him to reduce the usual labor for the spring install since they were putting the shocks on at the same time. This should end up with essentially a 2" lift and level the suspension. This same setup has been discussed frequently in this forum, I just finally had the money :-) and my oem shocks are way past shot at 222k miles!

That was the total for parts and labor and alignment? I got a quote for $1221 total for the same setup from 4 Wheel Parts in Orlando. That's what made me start looking for a used 3rd gen TRD Tacoma setup and just having a small shop do the labor for me, at least getting the front done first for cheap and then seeing how much the rear needs and go from there.

Looking like the KO2 in a 275/70R17 is only available in a E. I don’t know if I want a 55 pound tire on my 4R. What do you guys recommend?

Will these fit?

I read a post from LTDSC that said he used Tacoma front struts & spring on his 4runner. I pick up a 05 V8 sport tomorrow and was wondering if 2005-2015 front struts/springs will work on it?

Can someone please help. I am looking at a pair for 100 bucks but they are from a 19 TRD Tacoma... Will these fit??

Yes they will. 05-15 TRD Taco front strut and spring will get you about an inch lift, 2016+ TRD Taco will get you about 2".

I wouldn't recommend the KO2 at all. I liked the Falken Wildpeak a lot when I had them for a few weeks while waiting on a new set. They were very low tread but still were very smooth and relatively quiet too. A lot of people have issues with tread life and vibration issues on those KO2s. Falkens generally have a 55,000 mile warranty too.

So I got a toytec 3/2 lift with adjustable UCAs and now I need to order wheels. I’m going with the fuel shok D664 in 17x9 and I really am having a hard time figuring out if I need a +01mm or a -12mm offset??

I’ve only managed to find one video of a 4th gen with this set up and in the video it said they were the +01mm but I have not been able to confirm through messaging the maker of the video.

From other things I’ve read a +01 in a 9 inch wide wheel may not fit and will hit the UCAs? I just don’t want to order the wrong wheels !! Lol

Evan, I've seen most people go with -12 and myself liking -12 best. We've done a few here that went -12 as well with more luck with fitting larger tires. My vote and gms vote are for the -12!

Hi guys,
Thanks for this awesome informative post about lift kits for the 4th 4Runners. I see that a lot of people are willing to get rid of the XREAS system (which I don’t really care for). But my question is, if I get rid of it and replace it with after market non-XREAS shocks and struts, will I then get some kind of a “suspension” indication (or an engine light) because the system has been removed?
You guy’s help and time is appreciated.
