4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Just saw that someone is running this setup. That make sense?
Front: Bilstein 5100's set at highest setting, stock coils
Rear: Bilstein 5100's w/ Daystar 1.5" spacers, stock coils

i would suggest that setup as the simplest, most cost effective setup.

I know most go with OME springs on Bilstein 5100 adjustables, however im debating getting the Eibach springs from Toytec as the last few sets of Eibachs have rode amazing. Im worried about riding tank-ish with the OME's since most complain about the rougher ride, even with the medium coils.

Total that should be just over 3" of lift correct? 5100s @ 1.75 and the Eibach springs (1.5 net lift over factory). Anyone run this set up?

Anyone know can I only replace my front shocks with bilstein 5100s of I have xreas. My rear shocks were replaced before I bought the truck only a little over a year ago. So I would like to hold on to them

No. XREAS is a closed system and you must run it front and rear. You would need to swap the rear to a standard shock as well if you wanted to use the 5100's.

In case anyone was wondering, I know I was looking for this info for a while before I did it.

2003 Sr5 V8 170k (assume it's stock worn sagging coils, and stock shocks and struts no reason or evidence it was ever changed)
2012 fj coils taken off @ 5000 miles
Daystar 2.5/1.5 lift/level
Bfg rugged terrain ta 275.70.18 33.25 inch tall tire
Bilstein yellow shocks/struts take offs at 20 miles from a trd tacoma. Ended up only using the fronts and buying fj rear shocks (didn't want to deal with bushing)
Had to trim a little of the front bottom of Fender flare and remove front mud flaps. other than that it rides good, no rubbing.
Front went from 31" stock and worn Springs to 38" as it sits now. Rears went from 33" to 39". Overall it netted approximately 4" overall height

OME coils

I have a question about what OME coils should I run with my 4runner 05 limited, but mine is diesel. 1kz-te, it is a 4cylinder engine with turbo intercooler. SO what coils you recommend me to use and I will also run winch and an ARB front bumper.

If I run the Ikon front coilovers and Bilstein 5100 rear/ToyTech springs do I need a diff drop kit up front and aftermarket UCA's?

I am going to run most likely a 32" tire. I have a V6 Limited and do not want to regear. I'm running the factory 18" Limited rims.

I also tow a 5,000lb trailer a couple times per month on mainly flat ground (boat and a car trailer). Towing power is important to me... so I'm not going bigger than a 32" tire.

Thats the exact setup I got.

Yes, you need diff drop and swaybar relocate.

after market UCAs are not required, but recommended to get your alignment back to stock specs

From the first post on this thread:

As you get closer to 3" lift, you can begin to run into other issues. Three things come to mind.
First, at 3" and higher, you begin running out of caster adjustment on the stock upper control arms (UCA's). Aftermarket UCAs may be required to get the front end alignment back into spec. Here's a great thread discussing various options and benefits of the different UCA's offered.

Second, it's fairly common for there to be contact between the swaybar and front coils. To resolve this, you need to install swaybar relocates. There's no definite way to know you'll need these. My suggestion is that if you're going for 3"+ of lift, you probably should go ahead and invest in the relocates.

A third thing is a diff drop, which is intended to reduce the angle on the CV's. It's the general opinion that these do very little to improve the angle and are not worth installing.

My lift

I have an 03 limited with xreas and ras and i want to just add the daystar 2.5 front leveling spacers and if need be adjust the N setting on my ras to level up or down if needed. Any of you forsee any issue arrising with me doing this ? I know i would just add spacers to stock front coils and shocks ? Thanks for any help in advance .

I have, sitting in my garage, the stock four coils and shocks from a 2011 Trail Edition 4Runner. Does anyone know if this is comparable to or the same as the FJ suspension upgrade which has become so popular? I would like to install this on my 2006 V8 to level it out and firm up the ride.

Any thoughts or does anyone have knowledge of this swap?

I will save you guys the trouble.

Dude, get off your ass and get out in the driveway to find out for yourself.

I did just that. The wife had some school work so I grabbed a beer and headed to the tool box.

The install went just as with the FJ coil/shock swap. Grind down the front shock eye, enlarge the rear top shock mount hole. I did not use a spacer plate.

On my 2006 V8, 4x4 I got about 1" in the front, the rear looks the same. It seems to be slightly stiffer (thank goodness!) and is a bit more controlled. I will give it a good shakedown tomorrow.

Best thing...The parts were free.

Hi guys. I have searched and can't seem to find the straight answer after pages and pages of reading.

Will the stock suspension (complete) from a 2013 Trail Teams FJ fit a 2003 4Runner? I really want to get the FJ suspension mod done....would like to know how new I can go for the springs & shocks.

Thanks!!!

Bilstein V8 setting?

I've stocked up on a 2.5 Daystar kit and Bilstein 5100's my '03 V8. Just wondering what setting I would use up front for a V8 model to sit level on 265/70/17. Can't seem to find anything this specific? I'm sure its out there somewhere... Thanks!

With the bumper you would probably be fine with 885s on the front. If you're stock weight in the rear I'd run Toytec Superflex coils, but you can also run 895's (these are stiffer).

If you get the standard travel Icon kit, the UCA's won't be required as long as you do not exceed 3" of lift. With the extended travel kit, UCA's are required. I don't feel the diff drop is needed, I don't see it offering much benefit. The swaybar relocates most likely will be required.

I'm running 275/65/18's (32.1) and really like them. Other options would be 265/65/18 (31.6) or 265/70/18 (32.6).

I don't see any issues, I'm running a similar setup with no issues.

I don't believe they are the same, but it does sound comparable by the comments here. I haven't seen anyone else do this (besides JDMcQ), so only one way to find out. Do it and report back to us.

The coils would fit on the stock 4runner shocks, but you can't use the FJ shocks without modifications. You would need to grind down the lower shock mount on the front and enlarge the upper mounting hole on the rear.

Do not use the spacer kit with the front 5100's. Use the adjustment perch on the 5100's to lift the front instead. You can clear those tires stock, so it just depends on how much lift you are wanting. I'd use the second or third notch (second notch will make your running boards level, third will give you the same amount of fender gap) with stock rear. If you add a 1.5" rear spacer, use the fourth notch on the 5100's.

Any of you gents happen to know if 3/4" or 1" wheel spacers are enough to clear TC spindle gussets (With SB style gussets) with stock Sport wheels?

ARK, does the modification of the 4Runner shock mounts you described make it problematic to return the 4Runner back to a stock/regular shock? Are we talking a small amount of grinding and a small amount of enlarging? Or does this mean I have to used FJ shocks for the rest of time?

Also, do the stock FJ springs provide any kind of lift? I'm thinking of pairing a set of FJ springs with a full set of 5100's. Just looking for a mild lift/level and this setup looks like it is the simplest way to go (work wise & cost wise).

Thanks for your input!

I'm not real sure, not too many here running the TC spindle gussets.

Here's a pretty good thread showing the differences.
Can you put '10+ shocks on 09-? Yes.... but should you? - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

On the front, you grind down a small amount on the shock itself, so no problem returning to stock. On the rear, you have to enlarge the mounting hole on the 4runner. I don't think it takes much (and seems like I've read a few didn't have to do this), but it would prevent you from using 4runner rear shocks in the future.

I recommend the FJ coils, they are a great addition to the 4runner (not so much for lift, but they do improve the ride/handling). You will get some lift from FJ coils. See the FJ Swap Info link in my sig to help give you an idea of how much lift to expect.
