4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

New member here and I was wondering if anyone has tried the rancho quicklift front struts yet? I am not looking for anything crazy and do light to moderate off roading out in here in San Diego aka Borrego Springs area. I have a stock 2003 SR54x4 V8 with around 145k miles. I have noticed more body roll and it seems a little on the soft side. Plus I do want that extra few inches of ground clearance to get over the bigger rocks and not ding up my skid plates. The quicklift struts claim to add 2" but not sure since I haven't seen any 4runners with that set up yet. Any info will help! Thanks!

You won't find many people with rancho's here. When I last read general reviews on them (year or so ago) the reviews were mixed.

Most folks here use OME,Ironman or Toytec kits if on a budget. Fox, King or Icon if the budget has a little more room to play.

At 145k miles you can just use Bilstein 5100's shocks ($309 for all 4) with you stock springs. Set the front 5100 on the 2.5 slot and add a rear daystar spring spacer ($35). This will give you ~ 2.5" front, 1.5" rear and level the height. This setup is probably the cheapest way to freshen the suspension while not depleting the checkbook.

I like them...mostly.
I have had the Rancho QuikLift on current T4R (almost 3 years) and a second gen with the 9000 shocks.
The QuikLift is a decent low cost lift with the ability to change firmness on the fly with 'MyRide' incab control.
I will say it rode better without the Shockworks on the front, kind of soft/bouncy now(on pavement) all subjective i guess.
I would rather have soft/bouncy over firm/harsh ride. Rallys off road.
I could not get the caster back after the lift so went with the Light Racing upper control arms, fixed caster. Some dont think it is needed.
Just put SwayAway 1.5" coils in the rear(+12% rate) this year and its an improvement over the rear 1.5" spacer.
If you want to keep the swaybars hooked up you will need a relocate in the front and extended rear links.
If your thinking about front winch bumper i am not sure the Quiklift is the best solution.

What setting would I put on the 5100 with fj cruiser/moog coils to obtain 3" of lift

I'd say the third notch (1.75"). The FJ coils should give 1", so you'd net 2.75". If you go with the highest (2.5"), you'd net 3.5" and could run into issues getting the alignment back into spec. That said, it's all guesswork as no two rigs are identical but the v6 averages 1" lift from the FJ coils.

From what I can find, the only difference between 4th and 5th is the lower bushing size on the front shock. However, it seems as if it will still bolt right in as several have done it. Here's a few threads I found discussing this.

Has anybody had any issues with the fit of the OME coils on the 5100s. Called ARB today and they said they aren't designed to fit with the 5100 adjustable shocks. Isn't a coil just a coil as far as they way they should fit in the buckets.

I have OME 884 and 5100s. I tried them 1st on the .85 setting but my UCAs were hitting the coils because the springs were compressed too much. Thats why ARB says they don't work with the Bilstein 5100 shocks. I tried turning them every direction possible but they continued to make contact. I put them back to stock setting and everything works great. I have a good amount of lift and they ride great. If i had aftermarket UCAs then i could set them higher but all in all I couldn't be happier. Hope this helps

Good information, and I don't know if anyone has run into this problem, but I'm sure some have. I have an 03 t4r, limited, with xreas. Got the cornfed 3/2 lift. WHile a buddy was trying to install it, he unhooked the line for the xreas, and the ride became stiff and rough. From what I read, xreas being an air tight system, there is no way to refill it, it's basically shot. Am I right?

So my goal is to replace all around with the bilstein 5100's. So my questions about these are:

1 ) Are all bilstein 5100's the same? Meaning do I need one specifically for a 4runner, or if it says it's for a jeep but still 5100 bilstein, it's fine? (craigslist) NIB- Bilstein 5100 Shocks For 2-3in of lift (I know these are just the front) Will these work?

2) Will the bilstein 5100's work with the cornfed 3/2 lift, can I use them together and will the ride be fine?

3)Can I use the OEM(Factory) coils/springs with the cornfed AND the bilstein?

All I want is a 3 inch lift (2 in the rear is fine) I was happy with the xreas, but that is obviously shot.

Thank you in advance to my questions that I'm sure have been answered a ton of times. I found lots of good answers and inputs on this forum, it's just difficult finding the exact answers. Figured this tread would be a good start.

1. No, not all 5100's are the same. There are different collapsed and extended lengths that will be different for your 4runner. You need ones meant for 4th gen 4runners specifically. This is especially true in the front since you need the extended eyelet on the shock to avoid issues with rubbing the CV joint if you are 4wd.

2. They will work with the cornfed lift, but a better option is to use the height adjustable perch on the front 5100 shock set to 2.5'' and oem spring. If you want a full 3'', then you can add a 1/4" spacer above the tophat to get 3'' of lift. The 1/4'' spacers are sold on Toyteclifts.com.

For the rear, you can use the oem coil and the 2'' spacer that came with the cornfed without any problems.

3. See above

Hope that helps!

Okay, great, thanks.
The front of the cornfed is a 2 part I think So I have (2) 1/4 spacers.
But I'm glad the rear will work fine. And I hope the front springs will be fine too as I don't need to go over 3 inches, I hope they will be fine.
As far as the bilstein 5100's all around. Is there a part number for both, or the cheapest place you have seen them for sale?
Thanks.

Awesome, Good to know.
Thanks a lot guys. Just what I needed. I wasn't looking to spend too much.

Wanted to keep the stock springs, but might consider getting the fj springs too then.

Suspension Springs for 2006 2007 2008 Toyota FJ

does 170 for a set sound like a good deal, plus the 310 on the bilsteins? I know you get what you pay for in everything, so this total lift would probably do me much better than the cornfed.

170 seems steep for just the springs. I paid the price of shipping for my FJ rears. I'd go on the FJC forum and see if you can get a set cheap. I rarely see them listed for over 50/pair. i highly recommend the upgrade.

Hey guys, new here and had a question on this particular lift. Will I need anything else besides what's in this kit to lift my truck? If I find I need to add a sway bar link kit after the fact, that's not a big deal as those are cake to install. I don't feel like breaking the bank on a lift, but I don't want to run spacers. Plus I'm sure at 73,000 miles my shocks are about due for a replacement.

FWIW, it's going on my 2005 V6 SR5 4WD, and it has the plain suspension system on it. No air bags and no lines running from the shocks.

3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner

Now, on to tires, I want to keep my stock wheels. Would the 265/70R17 be a good choice, or should I maybe step up to a slightly larger size? I was planning on going with BFG AT K/O. What I don't want is to have to trim my fenders, and I don't want it to rub when flexing. So please keep that in mind when recommending a tire size. I also do not want to add any sort of body lift to my truck.

My intended use will be some mild wheeling, mostly fire roads and some trails, but nothing too extreme as this is my daily driver and I don't want to tear it up.

Thanks in advance and Happy Thanksgiving.

The only thing you'd possibly need is the sway bar relocate, but I'd install the lift first to see if you actually need it. My only suggestion would be to consider the ultimate kit so you have more adjustability. It's on sale right now, very good deal IMO. Nothing wrong with the kit you are looking at, but I really like being able to fully adjust the coilover and there isn't a huge price difference.

As for tires, 265/70/17 is your best bet for no trimming. If you run aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers you may need slight trimming but nothing major.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure whether or not the adjustable coil overs will be something that I really need, but I will consider them.
