4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Newb here. Help me out guys.

Ok guys, here is my situation. I just bought an 06 SR5 2WD with 95K Miles on it. I love it!, it's a beautiful shadow mica color. Anyway everything is stock and the previous owner took very good care of the vehicle. When I test drove it, I noticed absolutely nothing wrong with it. Today I drove it with my father in law (who is a hefty 300lbs like myself) and when I went through a couple of speed bumps, I bottomed out a little and kissed the bump stops. Doing a little research here has informed me that the stock springs tend to be on the soft side. I'm thinking about changing out all four shocks (KYB GR-2's for $193.00) I'm not going to use the vehicle for off-roading of any sort. The only thing I would like is for the vehicle to handle 4 adults, a baby and a bunch of luggage without a rough or aggresive ride. Or maybe the ocassional run to home depot with some weight in the back without dragging my ass on the pavement. Please give me your opinion guys. Should I be looking into a certain type of spring for the front and back? What is the middle ground between OEM comfort and aftermarket load handling?

Looking to level my truck out. Right now I'm running 265/70/17 tires and I plan on staying with them since they are brand new. What would be my best option? Don't do very much off roading but I also don't treat my truck like a princess

i currently have the daystar 2.5/1.5. I have moog fj coils(front and rear)
and bilstein 5100s(front) coming in the mail.

i want the 5100 set at 2.5 and am wondering can i install the moogs in rear
and keep the rear spacer ? without any other mods(extending brake lines etc)

also im trying to order 1 inch body lift . i am confused on 4crawler website as to which one and the toytech link isnt working. can someone post links to recommended 1 inch bl... thanks

Edit: will this bl work
1" body lift for 03-09 Toyota 4Runner and 07-13 Toyota FJ Cruiser

I'm looking to lift, from looking on the Toytec site, can anyone recommend OME over the Bilstein 3" lift? There's only about a $120 difference in the end, but idk which to choose. Thanks!

If you're low mileage, just add a small spacer to the front, or maybe something like the Daystar 2.5/1.5. If you're higher mileage or you're just ready to replace the shocks, I'd consider 5100's and maybe new coils if they're in the budget.

What coils will you run on the front, the Moogs? If so, that will likely put you over 3" in the front and you'll need to take that into consideration. Also, I'm not sure how much lift is gained from the Moog rear coils, but I'd guess that you will be fine with them and the spacer in the rear.

That body lift should work.

I like parts of them both. I like the front of the OME kit, and the rear of the Toytec. The Toytec coils are 620 lb/in which IMO is too stiff for stock weight in the front. The OME 884/885's are 590 lb/in for comparison. However, on the rear it's the opposite, Toytec coils are ~200 lb/in and OME 895's are 260. For stock weight, the OME's are too stiff.

My preferred setup would be 5100's all around, OME 884 (v6) or 885 (v8) front coils, and Toytec Superflex rear coils. For me, this combines the best of both and should net you 3" lift.

i will be running the moogs all around. what do you mean that i will need to take that into consideration? I read on another thread the moogs are taller than the oem fj coils.

Also, i got the toytec 1 inch bl ordered straight off their website.. it worked finally. thanks.

So you're planning to run Moog coils plus the 5100s set at 2.5"? Based on the specs, I'd expect 1" or more lift from the Moogs (haven't seen actual lift numbers). You'll likely have issues getting alignment into spec if you go over 3". Also, you may end up bottoming out the shocks often, they aren't designed for that much lift (higher you lift, the more down travel you loose).

I ran 5100s with over 3" lift (with light racing UCAs to get correct alignment), and that's the reason I replaced with icon extended travel. The icons are designed for that, 5100s aren't and this made a big difference in ride quality.

i just need to clear my 285 dynapro mts i just bought, ive moved fender liner forward, trimmed bumper, will prob do body chop, but want to see how it is after i install the 5100s , moogs, and 1 inch bl..

Are you suggesting i maybe set the 5100s to the middle height setting..
i dont want any rake .. iwant to get as level as possible, but mainly clear the 285s,
i will be doing a fair amount of offroading.

Based on specs of the coils, I'd use the .85 setting, but I'd highly suggest talking with someone running those coils to see how much lift they got. Moog FJ coils aren't the same as OEM FJ coils, they're substantially more stiff and also taller. With trimming, you should be able to fit them (assuming you run aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers) with 3" suspension and 1" body lift.

I was looking on the toytec website to piece together the parts you mentioned. The price is rather significantly lower than the combined kits, but the superflex coils don't mention anything about height and the bilsteins are rated for 2" of lift. Or am I looking at the wrong shocks?

OME 884s should put you at 2.5"-3" lift in the front, and the superflex rear coils will give around 2". Does the kit you were looking at come preassembled? If so, that would be part of the reason for cost difference. It's not a big deal to assemble them. Also, DownSouth Motorsports normally sells the 5100s for $330 shipped, a bit cheaper than Toytec. Don't forget, toytec does offer a 5% forum discount as well, the code is listed in a thread in the vender section (scroll down on the main page).

Don't people usually have a higher rear lift than front lift? With the diff drop, both front and back shocks, the ome/superflex coils and discount, it came out to $770 total plus shopping. So not too shabby but idk if I need to get the hardware to mount said shocks and coils or if it's included with them. I ended up speccing the shocks separately (front and back), as I wanted the extended nitrogen 5100's for the rear (not mentioned in the combined set)..

In stock form the front is 1"-2" lower than the rear. Most lifts are higher in the front to level it out. The shocks should come with new bushings, you'll need to reuse the top hat off the front coil overs. Wouldn't hurt to replace those if your 4runner has high mileage.

Mine's an '03 with ~133k miles. How much do top hat coverings cost? Also, anyone got any good tutorial sites for installing said lift, or is it better to YouTube it?

I want to say around $100, but would have to look it up to be sure. There are several links in the first post here, those are the ones I've found useful (especially the no sorting compressor one on the 120 site).

i have aftermarket wheels 17x8.5 with -6mm offset , i found a member bradentyrer who is running same setup with them set at 2.5 and daystar 1.5 in back with moogs all around.. but i haven't found if he has any issues with anything.

I'm currently running 5100 set at 2.5 and soon a .5 body lift. Will soon be getting coils to put me just under 3" of lift or maybe a little over and UCA's. Will I be able to fit 285s? If I have to do a little trimming and the body mount that's fine with me.

What amount of lift will Tacoma TRD sport front coils and shocks give over stock? Some threads are saying that they lift more than FJ coils. Anyone know for sure?

Those wheels should be fine with 285's, don't see any issues there. Again, it just comes down to how much lift is given from the Moog coils. If it's as much as I'm expecting, it would be more than I'd personally run with the 5100's maxxed out. At minimum I'd use the 1.75" setting.

You should be fine. It will take some trimming, removing mud flaps, and possibly the body mount chop, but sounds like you're prepared fro that. You will need either aftermarket wheels or wheel spacers to clear the UCA though.

I got a little over 1" with that setup on my v8 4runner. If you have a v6 I'd expect around 1.5".
