4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Yeah I'd like to be able to take it off-road, I obviously don't do it now since it's all stock.

I feel like most of the time the rid is ok, but obviously the system is damped for road conditions. Even on big expansion joints at highway speeds the suspension is overwhelmed, the shocks and springs are simply not able to handle big impacts.

This is what makes me lean towards the 6112 as they are monotube shock with typical Bilstein digressive valving, although I've heard mixed things on the 5160's leaking... so maybe on the rears go with Fox or something.

6112s are super awesome. I only have the 5100s in the front, but I swapped out the 5100s in the rear with OME Nitrochargers because the rear 5100s are shit. Bilstein rears seem to be having a lot of problems. That said, I believe people have better luck with 5160s.

OME is a very solid setup. I'm not planning to replace the fronts anytime soon, but if I did, I'd go OME. I have OME springs all around.

Ok I have also read about the 5160s leakahe problem. Also, I want to point out that 6112s vs fox are valved differently and you will feel a difference in your ride from the front end to back end. I suggest sticking to either a digressively or progressively valved shock. 6112 is a digressive shock and so is Icon for example. Thats is a much better set up as an example.

At that time I just had the front Icons installed. I had the stock rear air bags adjusted to level out with the front. Here's a current pic with the Icon rear installed. I do have a 1/2" body lift (was on in the other pic as well). I'm now running 265/70/18s which are just under 33" tall. I have it set so the running boards are perfectly level, there is about 1.25" difference in the fender to ground measurements between front and rear.

This is just perfect. I want.

Not in a position to justify an actual lift. 90% Highway at the moment.

Yeah I heard Icon is also digressive. But I've also seen a lot of Icons need rebuilds. Their seals must be very low friction / high service interval. Although rears are somewhat easy to take out. I'd be pissed if I had to do em every year or two.

Haven't looked into their service intervals, but I seen quite a few blown ones. Sounds like 40-60k is normal? At least they are rebuildable for a descent price and even user rebuildable if you're inclined.

Today at lunch, while climbing into my Runner, ripped a gaping hole in the seat of my jeans. Been mulling a lift, but if this is what I can expect, doesn't bode well...LOL

I have an 05' limited (no xreas) and I'm currently running the 5100's up front, set at .8" or whatever the first notch up from stock is. Stock in the rear. I'm planning to redo the rear and wanted opinions.

I'm leaning toward OME's 895 or 895e along with their rear shocks, and then bumping the front 5100's up to 1.5". Which would you guys go with? I do quite a bit of wheeling so I want a little bit more ground clearance and travel in the rear without breaking the bank. I am running a 265/70/17 KO2.

Do you guys recommend the 895 or 895e?

.85 is first perch, 1.75" is second. If I remember correctly, the 1.75" should net you roughly a 3" lift.

895 in the rear get you about 2" of lift, 895e more in the 1.5" range.

I have 885/895 and it sits almost perfectly level (i.e. similar sized gaps in between wheel/fender).

Thanks for the clarification on the heights. If I went with 1.75" in the front and the 895 in the rear, do you think I would end up with a negative rake?

Assuming you net the 3" in the front, the 895 should be perfect. But I can't recall correctly on the perch. I would look at pictures earlier in the thread, as well as the main post for that combination. I'm sure someone has done this.

Will do, thanks man

An alternative..

I'm leaning toward OME's 895 or 895e along with their rear shocks, and then bumping the front 5100's up to 1.5".

Would be combining OME struts and shocks to OME 883s up gaining 1.5 to 2.0" up front and the 895es in back for 1.5"s.

I thought about that, and will eventually switch up the front. But for the time being I'm only going to mess with the rear, trying to be budget friendly because I'm getting ready to buy a new bumper.

I kind of did the same thing

In that case i'd say you couldnt go wrong with the 895e and the OME shocks.

Alternative for unavailable Bilstein 33-187174

guys I was placing an order for 5100 series front and rears, and find the rears out of stock at several of the major retailers [autoanything, tire rack, 4wheelparts]. Should I select an alternative rear part to match up to the fronts? or just wait it out? or is there stock some place you may know of?

DownSouthMotorsports has the best price. FYI, this one is for a 4th gen 4Runner, just change your year accordingly if you don't have a 4th gen.

FYI, personal opinion, 5100 rears suck. I've had two break already. I use ARB Nitrochargers in the rear.
