4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Wheelers T13

Anybody have any info on the Wheelers T13 rear coils? My understanding is that they started making them so they could offer a coil that actually yields 1.5" of lift (unlike the T12). BUT...on their site it only references lift numbers for a 5th gen. I assume they would work fine with a 4th gen and could be a good alternative to FJ rears? If your running these I would be curious to hear about what shocks your using and how they match the valving.

I just put on 5100s at all 4 corners (fronts set to 0) and OME 884 springs in the front. I have RAS on my 04 4x4 V8, and with the 275/70 R17 BFG KO2s there is no rake. I haven't seen anything else on this issue, and I really hope it stays that way. This shock-snapping business better not happen to me!

So far the ride is awesome - my X-REAS and/or front springs must've been shot and I didn't know it. May have been original parts @164,000 when I replaced. Many thanks to ARK for this thread... he basically made my decisions for me!

I want to swap the RAS for rear coils sometime this summer, probably OME 895e or 895. Has anyone performed this kind of "transplant"?

I hope not. Seems scary to read that they can snap even while driving at highway speeds and fail on you...

Getting ready to swap out my xreas/spacer lift to an actual coil over/shock lift. Been looking at Toytec. What's the most comfortable for a daily driver? Ultimate vs Boss? Other options? I'm at 175k now.

I replaced working XREAS in good shape with the Boss kit front and rear with SPC UCA's, rides about the same, the XREAS was a pretty stiff ride IMO. I don't have any other lift experience other than two Boss kits.

I saw people asking about the Eibach shocks and coils, Toytec Boss is Eibach shocks and coils, just customized a bit for Toytec. I think the rear shocks are longer to pair with the Toytec 2" lift coils. Both Boss kits I installed I got 3" of lift out of the 2" coils (rear swaybar removed).

Posters above asking about problems with 5100's in the rear I remember reading something about the problems possibly related to using them with lift coils and rear 5100's are for 0-1" lift only. Toytec Ultimate rear (5100's) I believe they remedied that by using a longer shock that will work with the Superflex 2" lift coils.

It's difficult to sort through all the lift options. I got tired of it all long ago and narrowed it down to Boss full kit or Icon Stage 1. With either of those new UCA's are a good idea IMO, buy once cry once (and install once).

OME kit front/rear seemed like a darn good option also, everything is designed to work together, Toytec can ship it with the fronts assembled new topmounts/bushings. Toytec also can ship the full OME kit with Toytec Superflex 2" rear lift coils paired with OME 60020 shocks which are longer - 625mm open length/378mm closed length. Standard OME rear with OME coils is OME 60004 shock - 580mm open length/356mm closed length. OME fronts I'd probably upgrade the UCA's also, same buy once cry once install once deal.

I am in the middle of searching craigslist and what not, for deals on suspension. I have an 04 4runner v8 175k miles. It seems like the suspension is getting harsher even little bumps really vibrate the car. I don't do a lot of off roading when I do its mainly on the beach in the soft sand. I want suspension that is more on-road related that can really provide a plush ride.

I have found these deals and need help knowing what would work.
2016 Toyota Tundra TRD Bilstein rear shocks(brand new only 1000 miles on them)
OEM Bilstein 4600 Series off Tacoma 2011 TRD Sport
2010 FJ Cruiser Bilstein Shocks
2010 OEM Toyota Tundra shocks, struts

There is also a lot of Jeep Rubicon shocks, struts would anything like that work for a 4runner?

According to wheelers

the T-13s will provide about a 1/2 on the 4th gen but with a 220# spring rate. So even if you gain twice that its a nice mild amount.

Interesting...that sounds more along the lines of what I want. I thought it was the same spring rate as the T-12 tho (195?)....I could be wrong.

Just thought I would share the convo I just had with a very helpful guy from Mikes Custom Toys (the shop that contracts with Wheelers).

What he said pretty much aligns with what everyone is saying on here...most 4th gens get at least 2" from the T12 and hes not exactly sure about the T13 but suspects it would be right in the 1" range. He said he just threw a T13 on a 16' and it gave 1.25". Also, I asked why wheelers seems to imply that the T13 is intended for 5gens and he said its probably just marketing but the mounting is the same...so g2g for 4th gen also!

If you do go the T13 route id like to see the results.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and 4runners in general. Last week i picked up a 2004 V8 sport with 135k.

I dont know much about suspensions so I apologize if I sound like an idiot, but I was trying to piece together a lift kit and am looking for some input.

I am looking to get about 2-3 inches of suspension lift, w/ an additional ~1 in body lift in the front.

Would the following set work? Am I missing anything (extended brake lines etc.)?

Rear Icon Coils:
Rear ICON Coils for 07-09 FJ & 03-09 4RUN

Bilstein 5100 Rear Shocks:
Bilstein 5100 Rear shocks for FJ/4Runner

Bilstein 6112 (Front):

Camburg Uniball UCAs:

Swaybar Relocation Kit:
SBR-129 - Front Sway Bar Relocate Kit

Front Spacer Kit:

Thanks for the help!

The only things I can comment on with experience is extended rear brake lines - if you remove the rear swaybar as I did on both my '07 and '08 the axle droops to the point where the only thing holding it up from drooping further is the stock brake lines. If you reconnect the rear swaybar after coil/shock install the lines should be alright.

But, why not put extended rear lines on during the install? The brake bracket has to be loosened to get the 2" lift coil in. The reason I removed the rear swaybar is because I put Firestone 4107 airbags in with the lift coils, the bags serve the same function as the swaybar but allow the extra droop.

One thing I worry about though is with the extra rear axle droop will the shocks get overextended too often and fail prematurely? I don't know, maybe someone can comment about it.

Resi with or without adjusters

Are adjusters worth the extra cost, and if so: Why? Daily driver, weekend warrior most miles on crappy WI potholed roads.

If you have the money to get the remote resis, you have to get the adjusters IMO. Makes the suspension way more versatile and tailored to your preferences.

I'd go with the Bilstein 6112s for the larger diameter damper/shaft and adjustability.

Bilstein 6112 Series Front Shock Kit

There quite a bit cheaper elsewhere as well...:trophy:

But then what do you do for the rear? This seems to be the issue with the 6112 is people have to piece together the rear and try and match spring rates with 5100 or 5160 etc. Does bilstein plan in making a rear 6112 set up?

I'd say either go non-resi or go adjusters.

My Fox 2.5 DSC do provide a good amount of adjustment range, its noticeable for sure, especially the high speed adjustment. I set mine for daily use, but then adjust when I'm spending a long day or days off-pavement.

You can tailor for slower/rocky trails vs higher speed dirt/gravel/woops roads which need more low speed compression control, etc.

Holiday or Black Friday sales are good :).

Its a shame that

they dont offer a "kit". The 5160s seem to get good reviews and the ICON rears arent too much more either.

How often would you say you make a change?

I've been playing around with it regularly, only have the adjusters on the front though. For the street I've had it on 10 (firmest) for a while, really reduces body roll. Lower than 5 its mushy to me. I have it on 6 right now, seems to be the best. I had it around 4 or 5 while crawling down some large rock ledges and noticed the suspension would bounce a bit after stepping down. Cranked it up to 10 and the suspension didn't cycle at all.
