4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

they dont offer a "kit". The 5160s seem to get good reviews and the ICON rears arent too much more either.

I'd like to avoid the reservoirs as I don't plan on doing any hard core off roading and it's one less thing to fail. If I matched 5100's in the rear what coils would match the shocks in regards to spring rate/comfort?

That depends on whats up front

If you want all around balance you need to know the difference in spring rates between the OE and aftermarket springs.

The suspension FAQ sticky has alot of info regarding OE and aftermarket spring rates.

i know this post was 6 years ago, but im new to the forum and trying to find 18x9 wheels that will be flush with the fender without a wheel spacer...did your wheels with +25 get to the fender?

18x9 with a 0 offset would do it, and bring the wheels flush with wheel well.

Now, anyone else that has STOCK wheels and wants to bring the wheels out FLUSH with the wheel wells/fenders, you'd want the spidertrax wheel spacers, which I have IN STOCK right now.

Hey everyone, I'm new to 4Runners and need some help. By the way, this place has been extremely helpful in everything I've done so far!

I picked up my 4Runner about a month ago and have been spending the past couple weeks doing some maintenance. Now I'm on to suspension. I have an '07 Limited with the V6 engine and 131k miles.

The truck will be used primarily for driving around and very minimal off-road. I've been doing a lot of reading on here and I have dome of the parts I need picked out but I'm just a little confused. I may have done too much reading as I keep changing my mind.

Anyways, I'm going with the bilstein 5100's on the front and back. I would like to add FJ coils but they just don't appear very often around me and if they do they're higher mileage. I'd like at max a 2" lift and would like it go be fairly close to level. I'm ok with a little rake upfront.

My question(s) are as follows:

- Are the stock springs at 131k miles still in decent shape? If so, should I just add a 1.5" Daystar spacer in back and call it a day? If I go this route should I set the fronts at .85 or 1.75?

- Another option is to go with OME coils (884). What is the recommended front setting if I go with these on the front and rear?

I'm heavily leaning towards the first option if the consensus is that my stock springs are adequate. I'm doing this upgrade because the original shocks are due and I like the lifted appearance.

Appreciate the help!

Thanks! Will having a wheel like that hinder my tire options? I want to level it out and go one size bigger bfg ko2's.

After skulking a long time, wanted to post my lift/tire experience to see if helped anyone. Installed a 3" Rough Country spacer lift/rear spring, have XREAS so has a shock relocate in the rear. Added excellent clearance under 200$, on a 240k 2003 had frozen ball joint issues, and with XREAS cannot remove the struts for install. Required pickle fork and spring compressors, rented from Advance auto. Running 285/75/r17 cooper A/T's, no fender/mudflap removal. Under normal road conditions, no rubbing, I get a little chatter turning over curbs, ditches, etc. XREAS system and offset spacers require strut compression to get a properly rotated strut. Have about 10" under the diff.

Sorry, but I did not read all the pages, but I'd like to get some info / comparisons for a shock setup for stock, no lifted vehicles. Everyone says Bilstein, but what about others such as Rancho, KYB, etc? I want something that will soak up the bumps in the road.

My .02 cents worth of thoughts:

If you're limited to the Ranco/KYB/Monroe price range, then I would shop for mildly used TRD (Bilstein) Taco or FJ suspension. Better bang for your buck.

Otherwise, Bilstein HD aren't that much more. A full set of 5100's aren't that much more over the HD's. Don't think you need to add height to run Bilsteins. Stock springs work just fine on them.

5100's are the consensus "cheap" shocks and struts upgrade for this platform, then pay more if you play more. I wouldn't go any lower than Bilsteins. You get what you pay for.

Best Lift for Overland Trails

Great information! I have my 1st 4Runner and want to lift it, so what do you recommend if I want to do some overland trail driving? From my understanding that is not to rigorous, but do you think it requires a full suspension upgrade/lift or would spacers be okay? Thanks!

Just put on Bilsteins 5100s with front set at 0 with wheelers T1/T12 springs. Wanted closer to a 2.5/1.5 rear lift and be able to run 265/70/17 KO2s. Happy with the ride and height. Replaced 95k mile xreas.

Go with Daystar Spacer Lift

Hi, I'm also new to this forum but for the desired height you're going for, IMO I'd forget about the FJ coils and go with the daystar 2.5/1.5 spacer lift for front and rear. That will level your rig. I'm selling a set of daystar 2.5/1.5 if you're interested. PM me. I recently upgraded my suspension to full OME setup. See photo for what my rig looked like with the daystar spacer lift using stock springs and shocks.

Hi, thank you for posting this awesome information.

I am a brand new 4Runner owner and am considering getting a lift kit on mine in the near future. With that being said, I am wondering if anyone here has put on the heavy duty OME kit (886/896) prior to putting on their aftermarket bumpers. I have plans to get an aftermarket front bumper but I am wondering if it would cause any issues if I went on and installed the heavy-duty OME kit a few months before getting the CBI bumper on the vehicle. Has anyone done this? Is it a better choice to do the lift AND the bumper at the same time? or does it even matter.

Thank you!

James

Just got an 07 FJ setup with 20k (supposedly) from over at the FJ forums. The rear coils have a very slight amount of rust on them that appears to be where they touch the mounting plates when they are seated. I assume this should not be an issue but i'm not trying to run sketchy coils and Im curious to see what others think. I plan to give the rusty spots a quick sand and light layer of paint....think they should be good to go after that?

Also, I will just be using the coils so if anybody wants the shocks you can have em if you pay shipping.

So I'm looking to resuscitate my suspension, as I only have ~5/8" gap at my bump stops, and my front axles are pointed upwards(which now have two recently cracked boots). I have also started getting the lean in the rear, so would like to correct that, but I'm not interested in lifting the rear/truck overall(at this time).

It is a 165k miles pavement-pounding/grocery-gettin/family-road-trips 4Runner, AWD V8. Lives in the Bay Area, where I DD unloaded. Road trips 4-5 annually to SLC, UT, plus any other trips, loaded with just wife and kid(with enough luggage for double that).

At this stage I want to do coil overs on the front so I can raise/lower to get the leveling how I want(and future proof it, for when I can lift it), I'm thinking TC UCA, w/King coil overs.

Question is on the rear, it looks like my only option would be the OME rear coils, 895e-stock weight(1” lift). Is this accurate, any other options to consider? Will these correct my lean? And if the only option, for as close to stock height, how will it pair with with the King coil overs?

Level vs Lift Kit?

Okay, I have done A LOT of reading, asking etc. and still want to post a question to everyone. I have a 2009 Limited Sport 4Runner (Stock) I am going to put the newer matt black TRD 17" wheels with Terra Grappler G2 265/70/17.

Question: Should I do a ToyTec 2" front only coil spring spacer lift OR the Daystar 2.5 front/ 1.5 rear spacer lift.

I have been told the polyurethane lifts wear out rather quickly due to the material. Also, I want to make sure my CV joints are not going to get smoked by angle due to lift. I have the XREAS so for now it is spacers.

I do go off roading, especially when I hunt and would like to do some overland driving. The rig has 184K on it. Sooooo looking for some advice.

Metaltech LT springs with 5100 shocks anyone? Does this pair function well together?

I'm looking for a little more lift than the daystar spacers and i hear these ride the best? Just put the 5100s in a few months ago and dont really want to upgrade to the icon 2.0 already.

The MT LT springs give 3" of rear lift, which will put the short 5100 shocks in a range where they will be at max extension quite often if you wheel. Basically ride quality won't be the greatest.

My three questions are these: Can I replace these without having to get an alignment done? Are the KYB's a good replacement for offroading? And will a daystar levelling kit work to level out the front and back?

-An alignment is always recommended after playing with suspension components.

-KYB's for the street? Doable. Touch dirt? Look elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and search the for-sale section or local CL's for TRD Taco's or FJ Bilsteins if you want to be cheap but have semi-off roadable suspension. Those can be swapped over with easy adjustments. Even 5th gen suspension will swap over with a few adjustments.

-Get the right leveling kit and it'll lessen the rake.

Again, research like I answered in your other post.
