4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

Do you have tools, have you look into just doing it yourself?

Im still debating between 6112 front/icon 2.0 rear or just go ahead and do icon stage 2. theres too many options!

I do not have the right tools and I live in an apartment complex, so there's no way I can do this myself unfortunately. Also, I'd rather just trust professionals. A friend installed his own lift and it resulted in catastrophic failure on a trail. I know people do their own all the time but I'm as mechanically inclined as he is and if his failed, I figure it's not worth the risk.

I'm not sure where you live but you might try to find an offroad/overland specific distributor and see if they can do it. A lot of shops it seems look at the XREAS and they don't want that responsibility. I was being lazy and tried to get some shops to do it. One accepted, got it on the lift and called me at work to tell me to come get my truck because my included parts "wouldn't work" so I gathered some friends and spent a weekend cussing at my front end. It was tough, but I got it done and there's been no issues. I think a lot of shops look at the stock setup and then refuse to really mess with it. The truth is anything can be modified, the variables are time, labor, and money. This is something the average shop won't generally acknowledge, or if they do, will not proceed.

Definitely look into longer endlinks with your setup. I got mine from MStudt on this forum.

Anyone know if 5th gen 4Runner or 3rd gen Tacoma upper control arms are a direct swap for our 4th gens?

Based on a quick search.....

CAMBURG TOYOTA 4-RUNNER 2WD/4WD 03-18 PERFORMANCE BALLJOINT UPPER ARM KIT Sku: CAM-310079
CAMBURG TOYOTA TACOMA PRE/4WD 05-18 1.25 PERFORMANCE UNIBALL UPPER ARMS Sku: CAM-310036

Total Chaos: 2016+ TACOMA 6 LUG PRERUNNER & 4WD Part# 96504
2007+ FJ CRUISER 2WD & 4WD and
2003+ 4RUNNER 2WD & 4WD Part# 96504

JBA STD High Caster Upper A-arms for Toyota Tacoma "05" Plus, 4Runner "03" Plus, FJ Cruisers "07" Plus

Hard to say 100%. I would think they do. At least the 5th gen 4runner. TC lists the same part # for all. As does JBA. Although Camburg lists a different part # they may still be the same kit just a different SKU so they can track inventory/sales per vehicle?

Although I could be totally wrong! :suspicious:

Wondering if I can get some input. I’m putting on Bilstein 5100’s all around next week. I already have Toytec 3” coils on.

Ideally I’d keep the lift below 3” because after reading a ton of threads and the OP that’s where I’d need to switch out the UCA’s to aftermarket ones. I don’t do a bunch of hard off roading but I will be hitting some trails, 90% hwy driving though.

What would be an ideal setting on the Bilsteins to keep my rig level but with the most lift? Are The current OEM UCA’s reliable at like a 1.75 or 2.5 lift with the Toytec coils or are aftermarket UCA’s highly recommended? I’m having a local 4x4 shop do the work but I’d like to have some idea of what to convey what I want prior to work getting done.

I’ll be running 275/65/18 Wildpeak AT3’s which will hopefully fill the space decently.

Thanks for any input.

i think leaving the setting at zero for the fronts could be the way to go.
i am doing this with my Old Man Emu springs - leaving front at zero. i heard it isnt good to load lift springs with the bilsteins notched up. also it might be too high in the front if you set it to .85 or 1.75 etc.

I have OME coils instead of Toytec but I just used the stock setting on the 5100s out of the box. My UCAs seem fine. I'll probably replace in the future with something heavier duty but I would imagine with 90% highway driving that you will be okay.

Sig reflects what's currently on the truck. Beaten and bruised setup. They don't do as much suspending as they do keeping it from riding on the bumpstops.

Can you PM me (or post here) links to each of the parts? Again, information overload...$700-800 is much more palatable than $1100

So I put a spacer lift on my '07 last weekend and noticed a fitting in the XREAS system on the right front corner is seeping a little bit. It feels okay for now (no bouncing, rides good, etc) but I anticipate needing to get new shocks and struts within a year, probably much sooner. There is so much information around the internet, and I read on here for hours, but feel just a little overwhelmed, so here's what I'm wanting to do, and maybe you guys can give me some pointers:

I'm thinking about going with some Moog FJ springs, front and rear with Bilstein 5100s all the way around. If I set the front Bilsteins to .85, it sounds like it should sit a little level. If it isn't, I can always just match either the front or the back with some spacers. I would probably prefer OEM FJ springs, but I haven't had any luck with finding any for sale, granted I don't know how to use the forums very well.

Let me know what you guys think! My biggest concern in the Moogs, as they seem to have pretty mixed opinions on here, but they are also the most cost effective option

Thought you couldn't use spacers or really lift at all if you had the XREAS system? I know i'll be removing mine in the next month or two once I get the engine back together.

You don't need to disconnect XREAS, keep the hydraulic line connected and hold the shock in place while you slip in the spacer. I think that's the process.

I think the shocks have the same travel as standard shocks so other than the lines connected to the shocks they are the same.

I have 250K miles on my 2005 so the whole suspension is coming out either way. 3rd gen Tacoma Bilstein shocks up front with 5th gen 4R coils on them. I'll see where I sit once that's been installed and then lift the back to match if need be. I have 5th gen 4R rear shocks i'll swap in also.

You can do a spacer lift with XREAS. When I bought my 4runner it had XREAS and spacer front and back. I would only do spacer lift if all you care about is looks. Else better save some money and do a real lift.

Ah I agree, I'm fine with a rear coil spacer but not the massive front spacers. I'm going to experiment with my 05 when I get to that point of the build. We'll see what kind of lift I get up front with 2016 Tacoma OEM Bilstein shocks, 2016 4Runner SR5 OEM coils, OEM tophat with no spacer of any kind

Anyone have input on the Moog springs? I'd like to do front and rear, but unless they're close to OEM FJ springs I don't know that it's worth it.

I heard they don't last long and settle out quite a bit. Quality is nothing like OEM

Any leads on where to get OEM? I'm having a hard time even finding the right ones from the dealer. I'm normally not this incompetent with finding parts and part numbers, but I am really struggling with this for some reason

Which coils are you looking for exactly? Generally I've had good luck on the forums. Search around, post a wanted add. If you're looking for FJ coils, join some FJ forums and troll their sale threads. You'll find what you're looking for.

We designed the 4th gens kit off an Xreas 4Runner when they first came out. It will work with Xtreas no issue. The instructions are also specific for Xreas and explains what to do different, and you don't disconnect any lines.

2/1 leveling kit came out awesome. It sits perfect and alignment even stayed the same.

Note: the driver side rear spacer is made thicker, which fixes the driver side lean that all these trucks have. After installed the rear will also be level, which most don't always know.

Here was a customer that did the 3/2 with the Japan wider flares:
