4th Gen Suspension Options/FAQ

BUMP! Just looking for some insight from those of you that are running OME suspension. THANKS!

Hey folks, have a question for all of you running OME 3" suspension lift. I have decided to go with 90021/884 combo in the front and 60004/895 combo in the rear. Toytec suggests the following items to ensure the proper lift height and leveling: 95PF5 - Trim Packer (to correct potential lean), and Front Top Plate Spacer Kit which they claim is necessary to achieve a true 3" lift in the front.

I reached out to a local 4x4 company about this same kit and on their site they don't list the trim packer or top plate spacer as necessary or optional. This was the response I got from the shop: "There are enough spring options that one does not need to use the trim packers on spacers. We would use OME2884’s for the front and you should see slightly more than 3” of lift compared to stock (that is based on measurements in house)."

Would love to hear feedback from those of you running an OME 3" lift....should I go with the Toytec recommendation and use the spacers and packer? Or is the local shop correct and I can save myself a couple hundred bucks and go without?

Thanks!

After wading through piles and piles of threads, decided to go with 5100s and FJ springs. I'm doing the swap (along with XREAS delete) on Friday, will post back with results.

That said, any issues with this approach? Hoping to net around 2.5 up front and 1.5 in back.

Front:
5100s set to "0" and Moog FJ 81108

Back:
5100s and Moog FJ 81045

Thanks!

Thanks for this!

I'll throw in my opinion, which everyone is entitled to have! If your budget is 1k, you'll be more than fine to replace the suspension and tailor it to your liking. I would consider this, what are you towing? What weight do you need in the rear springs to hold that additional weight? When I added my Wilco, full size spare, jerry can, hi-lift, and gobi ladder to the rear I immediately noticed a sag in the rear. I replaced the springs with heavier rated load, and it's night/day different.

I got my rear Toytec shocks for $200 and my rear Dobinson springs for $200 (both new). You can get a set of lightly used coilovers in the front for around 4-500$. As a matter of fact, I saw a 4th gen guy post last week about a set of Toytec/Bilstein coilovers ($600 new) that had less than 1k miles on them for $450. If you aren't putting a bumper in the front, grab those! I would buy them, but I'm already running those coilovers anyways.

If you have the tools or a neighbor with any mechanical experience, the install for both front and rear is rather straight forward. This will save you labor costs so you don't get charged an arm/leg and can use that money towards the parts itself.

From my two years of owning my 4th gen, I've replaced my suspension twice and molded the capabilities to my liking and have done it for <1k, that I promise you.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, very helpful!

Towing:
1. Small utility trailer to/from hardware store - nothing serious
2. Small (6x10) enclosed trailer (probably ~3,500 lbs)
* Both happen rarely (~1/month)

Rear
I may add a Gobi ladder & another cargo box, but I don't know that requires heavier springs as it will probably only add ~250 lbs total.

Could you link to that 4th Gen sale. I'll probably pick those up!
Thanks again

Ive read hundreds of posts here with mixed answers and all slightly different lift results.
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice here.

I just purchased a 2005 4Runner Sport v8 with 59k miles.
It has Xreas currently so i opted for the toytec 2.5” spacer in the front and 1.5” lift in the rear
Front hub center to fender is measuring 21.25”
Rear Hub center to fender is measuring 22.25”

My question is this.
Planning on getting the SCS Ray 10 in 17x8.5 with -10 offset so i was curious what size tires i could fit without tons of rubbing issues
275/70/17 in the BFGoodrich KO2 is only offered in E rating so I’d like to step up to the 285/70/17 C rated Duratrac if possible but not if its going to require a body mount chop.

Also Would there be an advantage for me to go to the -38 offset wheels?

Thank you

I have 275/70/17 KO2 on my 2004.
they are E rated but I run them at about 32psi around town and a bit more when towing. Run great. been 2 years so far.

They were at like 50 when I put them oj and thought my teeth were gonna fall out :crybaby:
reduced the psi and run smooth!

i have billstein 5100 around- 1.85 in front with stock springs and a spacer in back.
I have no issue and had to do nothing EXCEPT when at full turn backing in- I get a rub on UCA. I just don't back in that sharp. I'm sure new arms would fix that or wheel spacer but I want better offset rims so I will wait.
just some info to help make your decision. Good luck

Check the 4th gen specific for sale thread, they're on the last page.

I've had many, many people do our spacer lift in conjunction with the Bilstein 5100's. I can't finds the posts on here as they are several pages back, but what customers have said is, with the Bilsteins set at 0 or almost 0 with our 2/1 kit installed, it rides BETTER than with the Bilsteins set at higher or max. This is good to know, and if anyone else wants to try this, let me know. Kits are on sale, but I'll help out more if I can if anyone else wants to try this.

Hey Jason,

What set up is on that first photo of the black 4runner? Bilstein 5100 set at 0, stock springs, and how big of a spacer up front? I think that's the perfect look/height that I'm looking for. Thanks.

Looking for advice

Like several other posters, been reading through this thread, it is mind-boggling to say the least. Looking for advice if anyone is willing to give it.

Here's what I'm wanting to do with my '04 T4R V6 4WD (stock suspension, stock tires, basically stock brakes (I'm replacing rotors and pads this weekend with nothing crazy), 230,000 miles):

I'm wanting to update the stock suspension with the goal of making it ride better, primarily on the street. A slight lift is fine to get it leveled out, but not looking to lift the vehicle. The offroading that I do is mild compared to what most people here seem to do - it's generally getting to a camping/fishing location. I'm keeping the stock wheels/tires/brakes, I don't have a steel bumper and winch, roof rack is stock, I load the vehicle down when I'm going camping/helping somebody move/etc.

Most of what I see on here is targeted toward the offroader crowd, and like a previous poster I'm basically looking to improve the stock ride and level it out.

Anyone got advice on a relatively boring suspension upgrade? Thanks in advance!

IMO you can’t go wrong with a setup similar to what many here have done using FJ or Tacoma springs & Bilstein 4600 or 5100 shocks. The “X-REAS delete...” thread linked in my sig shows what I did for all of $200, and that’s just one example. The beauty of it is a very smooth ride on the road and the ability to handle just about anything you may run into on a trail, all for a reasonable cost even if you buy new parts.

Hey Russell, I've read your post before and it's very helpful. I'm leaning that direction for my own rig. One question I've got is do you know what years of TRD Tacoma suspension would work? Some list theirs by year TRD and some by Generation (3rd Gen, etc). Also, when I look for them, I find that some are Bilstein and some are Toyiko (spelling?). And, I'm having a hard time finding the FJ rear springs that aren't highly used or "unknown" how many miles are on them. I don't want to go from my high-mileage springs to another set of high mileage springs. Would you recommend getting OME or Moog springs for the rear?

Many thanks!

My PM response would make more sense if I had read this before responding to your PM. In any case, 2005-2015 is the 2nd Gen Tacoma and parts from those should fit a 4th Gen 4R to the best of my knowledge (but please see my PM about being sure).

Also, there are videos linked in the first post of my build thread (link in sig) that will show the off-road performance you can expect. The 2019 Kentucky Toyota Trail Ride is a good one for that as is the 5313 Offroad Park.

I'd love to hear your opinions on toytec superflex rear springs vs Icon 2" rear lift springs. Looking to replace the spacers in the rear. I have bilstein/toytec front lift.

You'll probably be happier with the superflexes especially if you already have our front lift. I've had more people switch out their icons to the superflexes but never the other way around. Let me know if you have more questions about our systems.

Thanks Anthony,

Which shocks would you pair them with?

So the toytec guy votes for the toytec setup, anyone have any thoughts in support of the icon setup? I'd like to hear a few opinions if anyone has personal experience with either of these setups

I ran superflexes and Icon 2.5 remote resi’s with the adjusters for a few weeks. Nice ride. I just like 20 minutes ago switched to Icon 2” rear springs. I’ll update in a few days when I have a chance to drive around a bit.

It depend on how much weight you will carry. I had the Superflex in the back and they were great empty but I kept hitting the bump stops when off-road fully loaded for long trips (family of 4). Switched to Icon Overland springs and they are great. Not too hard empty either since they are dual rated, but you get 3" of lift. If you don't carry a lot of weight the Superflex are nice.

Bilstein 5100 with Daystar 2.5"?

2007 Limited V6
Ive researched and seem to find conflicting information on this setup. I realize the 5100's are adjustable however Im generally happy with my current ride height. I'm currently running the daystar spacers and have just purchased the 5100's. Going to keep stock springs. Id like to stay at the same height-maybe slightly higher. My concern is adjusting the spring tension on the strut making the ride stiffer-but maintaining my current height without spacers. Or setting the 5100s basically stock and keeping the spacer-maintaining stock ride quality(?) It seems like most people say ditch the spacers and adjust the shock but I also see people complain about a stiff ride on higher settings, would the spacers on a stock setting not be the best of both worlds? Thanks in advance!!
