4th Gen TRD Pro Suspension Retrofit

Wanted to share my experience with the TRD Pro suspension in case others decide to pursue this option. I found the complete suspension including UCA's, rear arms, panhard locally for $1k off a 200mi 2016 TRD Pro. The modifications listed below are the only items I had to change, the TRD Specific part numbers are detailed as well. This is only intended as a reference document, I'm assuming you know how to install suspension, if not there are a number of forum threads and youtube how-to's available that cover that.

Donor Vehicle: 2016 4Runner TRD Pro
Recepient: 2008 4Runner SR5 V8 4WD

Difficulty: Moderate, suspension experience recommended.

Tools:
Large Impact (numerous bolts required this)
1/2" Drill or similar (or a hand file if you're patient enough)
Heavy Duty Floor Jack (I used 3.5 Ton)
Heavy Duty Jackstands
Small jacks - For misc lifting to position parts
Metric tool set - flex head ratchets recommended
Saw/Grinder or similar - For trimming the front shock eyes down
Hex Set - Required for remote reservoir and sway links

Required Modifications:
Rear shock upper mount hole:
Existing - 7/8"
Required - 1"
Front shock lower mount:
Existing - Too Narrow by about 1/8 - 1/16
Action - Trim sides of shock eyes

Parts Details:
UCA - Same as non Xreas
Rear Lower Links - Same
Rear Upper Links - Same fit, but thicker eyes
Panhard - Same fit, but thicker, tapered bar
Rear Springs - Slightly thicker, 1 additional coil

Ride Height @ fender lip after install: (if anyone has stock 08 4WD V8 height please share)

Unfortunately I forgot to do before measurements so I don't have lift numbers.


The Parts
Note: I moved the front spring seats to the upper notch prior to install. Also didn't install the UCA's

Front Shock Comparison - A little taller

Rear Shock comparison - The TRD's are a bit taller

Front Shock Lower Mount Comparison - TRD is larger with thicker eyes

Front Shock Lower Mount Comparison - TRD is 1/8" - 1/16" wider

Rear Upper Links - TRD Eyes are thicker

Rear Upper Shock Mount - TRD is much larger

Rear Spring Comparison - TRD is slightly thicker and has 1 more coil

Panhard comparison - TRD is more beefy

Modifying Parts:
PLEASE NOTE! USING A 1" DRILL BIT TO WIDEN THIS HOLE CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS, USE CAUTION!!!!

Alternated between 1-1/8" step bit and 1" regular using light pressure so the bit didn't snag and break my wrist.

It fits! Also note the hole for the alignment tab and resevoir already existed.

The front shock is too wide for the mount. I decided it would be better to trim the shock instead of the mount to retain the mounts original strength.

Gently trim/grind back about 1/16" of material on each side. I tried a grinding wheel, but found the cutting blade in horizonal position worked best.

Fits perfectly now. Be sure to alternate sides when trimming and ensure symmetry

Ride height after completion and test drive. Will grab better shots later...

Great write-up, but I should mention the links are probably beefier because they came from to J150 platform and not because they were on a TRD Pro. The suspension and accessories are the only really unique things to the TRD Pro, the rest is common across all 5th gens (i.e upper and lower links).

No, they upgraded to an icon stage 7 just after buying it. Guy worked for Toyota so I guess he got a decent discount on it, otherwise didn't make much sense

I completely forgot to get before measurements
Despite still having 2" of rake it is definitely more level, will need to adjust the headlights down as I'm now blinding oncoming drivers. Might do a spacer up front to level it out a bit as well, will see how it settles over time.

Just finished it before doing the write up so I hadn't had much driving time just yet, it handles our speed bumps rather well though lol. We had some roads around here that were nearly bottoming out the stock suspension, will hit those later...perhaps off road this weekend.

TRD Sport swap

thanks for the write up! not sure how much the suspension differs from the TRD Pro, but I may pick up 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport Hitachi shocks,struts, and coils for my '05 4R Sport. Any idea if the fit will be ok? Don't really want to get into too many mods.

the 6112 the aftermarket equivalent of the 4Runner TRD Pro shock Bilstein developed for Toyota. So is the 5160.

These are the only two I've taken since I finished the project, will get it cleaned up and do some more one of these days. Don't have current/final measurements in front of me, but I recall it being just under 1" rake which put the running boards dead level.

edit: pulled the trigger since I was able to find the kit (PTR13-35140) for $607 shipped.

I'm doing this next weekend. Bought take offs from a 2017 TRD Pro 4Runner and picked up the 3/4" Toytec spacer in case it doesn't lift enough in the front. I've got the V8. Do you remember how much lift you got before you added the spacer? Thanks.

Anybody updates on the ride? I just bought the TRD pro suspension off a 2017 4runner with a Toytec 2” lift already installed. Curious how everybody is liking the ride?

I have probably 1500 miles on mine. Rides great, no complaints.

I have had TRD suspension on mine for about a year now (15k miles) and love the ride. I ended up buying the Toytec lift kit for it that includes the rear lift springs and a front spacer.

With the V8, there is some rake, similar to factory. I read that the spring rate is a little low on the front (550 lbs I think) so I am upgrading the front coils next week with King 650 lbs.

Around 20k on mine so far and no complaints! Hadn't done too much offroading, but held up pretty well when I did.

Schafer canyon at Moab and Bear Pass Telluride (partial, was snowy) were a breeze. Another side benefit is dips at intersections are easy now vs slamming & bottoming out stock or in the Wifes BRZ, 4Runner takes them full speed without flinching.
